To improve html2canvas output, first check the canvas pixel dimensions and set scale deliberately—usually starting with window.devicePixelRatio. If an image is missing, a capture is clipped, or the result differs from the page, increasing scale will not fix the underlying cause. html2canvas reconstructs an image from DOM information; it does not take a native screenshot of the browser’s final pixels.
Start by identifying what “poor quality” means
Different symptoms need different fixes. Compare the element’s CSS size with the canvas’s actual pixel size, then inspect the source images, capture area, and browser output. A larger canvas can address undersampling, but it cannot add detail absent from a source image or make unsupported CSS render correctly.
- Everything looks soft: inspect
scaleand the canvas dimensions. - One image looks blurred: check its source size and resampling settings.
- Images are missing or export fails: check cross-origin access and CORS headers.
- The result is blank, cut off, or unlike the page: check capture dimensions, canvas limits, and CSS support.
Set scale for the output pixel dimensions you need
The html2canvas configuration reference gives window.devicePixelRatio as the default for scale. The project’s example also passes that value to produce a sharp result on high-DPI displays. Scale multiplies the rendered pixel dimensions while keeping the CSS-sized content the same. For example, an element 800 CSS pixels wide rendered at scale 2 produces a canvas about 1600 pixels wide, subject to browser limits.
Inspect the result rather than assuming a particular multiplier is right. If the destination displays the image at its original CSS size, a higher pixel count may look sharper. If it enlarges the image substantially, the source content and capture fidelity still matter. Higher scale also increases memory use and processing time.

const element = document.querySelector('#capture');
if (!element) throw new Error('Capture element #capture was not found');
// Example memory-conscious cap, not an official html2canvas recommendation.
const scale = Math.min(window.devicePixelRatio || 1, 2);
const canvas = await html2canvas(element, {
scale,
useCORS: true,
backgroundColor: '#ffffff',
});
const blob = await new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
canvas.toBlob((result) => {
if (result) resolve(result);
else reject(new Error('Canvas export returned no image'));
}, 'image/png');
});
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.href = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
link.download = 'capture.png';
link.click();
URL.revokeObjectURL(link.href);
This is an illustrative implementation, not a benchmark or a promise that scale 2 will work on every device. The html2canvas example demonstrates PNG export with toDataURL(); toBlob() is useful when the application needs a blob rather than a data URL.
Choose scale with memory and destination in mind
Canvas storage grows with pixel area, so doubling both width and height means roughly four times as many pixels to hold and process. Very large canvases can fail, become blank, or be partially rendered. Start with the device pixel ratio, raise it only when the output needs more pixels, and reduce scale or capture smaller sections if the browser runs out of canvas capacity.
Improve image resampling without expecting invented detail
html2canvas exposes imageSmoothing and imageSmoothingQuality. Smoothing is enabled by default; the documented quality hint defaults to low. These settings affect how pixels are resampled, not the underlying DOM reconstruction process.
For photographic images being resized, smoothing is generally appropriate. For pixel art or crisp pixel-grid assets, smoothing can make edges look soft; test whether nearest-neighbour behavior via the element’s CSS image-rendering better suits the result. The forceImageQuality option applies canvas smoothing settings to images and ignores each element’s CSS image-rendering. It does not restore detail or guarantee a higher-quality source image.

When only one image is blurry, compare the image’s intrinsic dimensions with its rendered size. A small source enlarged in the page is already lacking detail; changing canvas scale cannot recover it. Likewise, PNG versus another export format changes encoding characteristics, not the number of captured pixels. The project’s configuration reference and example document these settings and export options: configuration and documentation.
Fix missing images and export errors with CORS
A cross-origin image can taint a canvas, preventing the browser from exporting it. Set useCORS: true only when the remote image server permits the request with a suitable Access-Control-Allow-Origin response header. If the server does not allow it, use an image source you control or a carefully designed proxy that retrieves the resource through your own origin.
allowTaint does not bypass browser security or make a tainted canvas readable for export. These are origin-policy constraints, not resolution settings. Review the project’s FAQ and configuration reference before changing options: https://html2canvas.hertzen.com/configuration.
Capture the intended area and avoid canvas limits
If content beyond the viewport is clipped, configure windowWidth and windowHeight to match the target’s scrollWidth and scrollHeight. The configuration also supports explicit width, height, x, and y, which can help focus a capture on a smaller region.

Large dimensions are not a reliable route to better quality. The html2canvas FAQ gives rough current-evergreen-browser guidance of a maximum dimension around 32,767 pixels and approximate area limits of 268 million pixels for Chrome/Chromium and 472 million for Firefox; it lists the same rough dimension for desktop Safari and says iOS Safari limits are lower and depend on device RAM. These figures are approximate FAQ values, not guarantees for a specific browser build, operating system, GPU, or device. The FAQ points to the canvas-size library for up-to-date browser and platform test results.
If a full-page capture exceeds practical limits, try a lower scale or split the content into smaller captures and stitch them in an application that can handle the result. Test that approach in your target browsers; it may introduce seams or layout differences if the page changes between captures.
Understand why the capture may not match the browser
html2canvas builds its output from DOM information and styles it understands; it does not capture the browser’s final composited pixels. The project documentation cautions that the result may not be fully accurate to the real representation because it is not an actual screenshot. Raising scale cannot fix unsupported or partially supported CSS, missing fonts, animation state, or content that had not loaded when capture began.
Wait for the page state your application needs before capturing: relevant images, fonts, and dynamic content should be ready. The exact readiness logic depends on the page and is not a guarantee provided by html2canvas. Where visual fidelity matters, test the actual content and target browser, rather than inferring accuracy from a larger canvas.

Troubleshoot common html2canvas quality problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Whole output looks soft | Canvas pixel dimensions are too low for the display size. | Compare CSS size with canvas size; set scale deliberately, starting at window.devicePixelRatio. |
| Only resized images look blurred | Source lacks detail, or smoothing is not suited to the artwork. | Use a higher-resolution source where available; test smoothing for photos and nearest-neighbour-style rendering for pixel art. |
| Image is absent or export throws | Cross-origin image tainted the canvas or the image was not ready. | Ensure the remote server sends suitable CORS headers, use a controlled proxy, and wait for the image. Do not rely on allowTaint to permit export. |
| Capture is clipped below the viewport | Capture dimensions reflect the viewport rather than the full element. | Set windowWidth and windowHeight from the element’s scroll dimensions; consider smaller regions. |
| Canvas is blank or partial at large sizes | Browser or device canvas dimension/area limit was exceeded. | Reduce scale, reduce the capture area, or split the capture; test on target platforms. |
| Output differs despite high pixel dimensions | Unsupported CSS, dynamic state, or DOM reconstruction differences. | Confirm the page state and CSS support; use a native browser screenshot mechanism if exact rendered pixels matter. |
When a native browser screenshot is the better fit
If you need the browser’s actual rendered pixels rather than a DOM-based reconstruction, consider a native screenshot mechanism or browser automation. For browser extensions, the html2canvas FAQ says major browsers expose native screenshot APIs that are more reliable and do not have canvas size limits. It names Chrome, Edge, and Opera’s chrome.tabs.captureVisibleTab() and Firefox’s browser.tabs.captureVisibleTab(). These capture the visible tab; they are not a drop-in substitute for every full-page or element-capture workflow.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot returned from one GET request rather than a client-side canvas, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its capture process can accept cookie/consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
Example cURL request (replace the target URL and provide your API key):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. Does increasing html2canvas scale make an image higher resolution?
It increases the output canvas pixel dimensions for the same CSS-sized content. It cannot add detail missing from the source image or correct unsupported CSS.
Will useCORS: true load every remote image?
No. The remote server must permit cross-origin access with an appropriate CORS response header, or the resource must be obtained through a controlled proxy.
Does html2canvas take a real screenshot of the page?
No. It reconstructs an image from DOM and style information, so its output can differ from the browser’s final composited pixels.
