First find out whether the page fails in PhantomJS itself or only in Selenium. Open the URL with a minimal PhantomJS script, log resource and JavaScript errors, and check TLS, proxy, and rendering delays. If PhantomJS loads the page but Selenium does not, focus on the WebDriver session and synchronization. For a durable fix, migrate Selenium tests to headless Chrome or Firefox: Selenium removed native PhantomJS support because its WebDriver implementation was no longer actively developed.
Separate a PhantomJS page-load failure from a Selenium failure
A blank page, a timeout, and a WebDriver session that never starts are different failures. Treat the browser process and the Selenium connection to it as separate layers. PhantomJS can fail to fetch or render the site even when Selenium is configured correctly; conversely, PhantomJS may load the site on its own while an outdated or unsupported Selenium integration fails to create or control the browser.
- Page-load failure: PhantomJS starts but reports an unsuccessful navigation, a resource error, a timeout, or a blank/incorrect DOM.
- Session failure: Selenium cannot start a session, cannot connect to its driver, or uses a PhantomJS-specific constructor that no longer works with the Selenium version in use.
- Synchronization failure: The page responds, but the application has not finished rendering when the test looks for an element.
These distinctions matter: changing wait times will not repair a certificate error, and changing TLS settings will not restore a removed WebDriver integration.
Record versions and reproduce the URL outside Selenium
Before changing code, record the exact browser, binding, and driver involved. In a terminal, run:

phantomjs --version
Also note the Selenium language binding version and any WebDriver or PhantomJS driver version installed. Confirm that the command resolves to the binary you expect; PhantomJS’s troubleshooting guidance warns that multiple installed versions can conflict. If several PhantomJS installations exist, identify which one Selenium and your shell actually invoke before diagnosing a behavior difference.
Next, call PhantomJS directly with a small script. Save this as probe.js:
var page = require('webpage').create();
var address = 'https://example.com';
page.onResourceRequested = function (request) {
console.log('REQUEST ' + request.url);
};
page.onResourceError = function (error) {
console.log('RESOURCE ERROR ' + error.url + ': ' + error.errorString);
};
page.onResourceTimeout = function (request) {
console.log('RESOURCE TIMEOUT ' + request.url);
};
page.onError = function (message, trace) {
console.log('JAVASCRIPT ERROR ' + message);
trace.forEach(function (frame) {
console.log(' ' + frame.file + ':' + frame.line);
});
};
page.open(address, function (status) {
console.log('PAGE STATUS ' + status);
console.log('TITLE ' + page.title);
console.log('URL ' + page.url);
phantom.exit(status === 'success' ? 0 : 1);
});
Run it with phantomjs probe.js. Replace https://example.com with the failing address. The resource callbacks show which requests fail or time out; the page callback reports PhantomJS’s navigation status. Calling phantom.exit() in the callback is important so a failed run does not leave the process hanging. These callback patterns and the minimal page.open flow are documented by PhantomJS.
If this standalone test fails, troubleshoot PhantomJS, site access, or page compatibility before involving Selenium. If it succeeds but the Selenium test fails, prioritize the session setup and timing checks below.

Fix HTTPS failures without disabling certificate checks as a solution
If the same site works over HTTP but not HTTPS, inspect the browser’s TLS environment: the OpenSSL/TLS libraries available to that PhantomJS installation, the server’s certificate chain, protocol negotiation, and any custom certificate-authority (CA) path your environment requires. A browser binary bundled or built differently from another machine can behave differently against the same endpoint.

PhantomJS exposes command-line options including --ssl-protocol, --ssl-certificates-path, and --ignore-ssl-errors. Use the first two only when you have a specific protocol or trust-store requirement to address. --ignore-ssl-errors suppresses certificate validation; it can help determine whether trust validation is the source of a failure, but it does not fix the certificate chain or establish a trusted connection. Do not use it as a production workaround for a site whose identity you need to verify.
When HTTPS fails, preserve the resource error output from the probe and compare it with the certificate and network configuration on a currently supported browser. This narrows the issue without hiding it behind a blanket validation bypass.
Check proxy, DNS, firewall, and outbound access
A browser cannot load a page if the machine cannot reach the host. Check that the hostname resolves, that outbound connections are allowed, and that the server or CI environment can use its required corporate proxy. A failure limited to one network often points to proxy configuration or network policy rather than page JavaScript.
Recommended Free Tools
PhantomJS documents a Windows default-proxy latency problem and a possible workaround, --proxy-type=none. Try it only when the environment should connect directly rather than through a configured proxy. In a managed network, disabling the proxy can make access worse or violate network requirements; first establish which route the machine is expected to use. PhantomJS’s command-line reference also documents proxy options for configuring a proxy where one is required.
Verify PhantomJS page settings before navigation
Set and inspect browser settings before calling page.open. PhantomJS’s settings reference says these settings apply during the initial page.open call. A diagnostic script can explicitly show the relevant configuration:

var page = require('webpage').create();

page.open('https://example.com', function (status) {
console.log('PAGE STATUS ' + status);
phantom.exit(status === 'success' ? 0 : 1);
});
JavaScript is enabled by default, but verify javascriptEnabled rather than assuming it was not changed elsewhere. Review the configured userAgent if the site serves a different page to the test browser. Check webSecurityEnabled and localToRemoteUrlAccessEnabled when the page loads local content or accesses remote resources. Avoid weakening security settings just to make an unexplained failure disappear; identify which browser security restriction is involved first.
Increase resourceTimeout only when logs show a slow resource is timing out and a longer wait is reasonable for the test. A longer timeout does not fix an unreachable host, a blocked request, or an application that is incompatible with PhantomJS.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Wait for application readiness, not just a successful response
A successful navigation does not prove that a modern web application has finished rendering or that the element under test is ready. Selenium’s troubleshooting guidance says: “The most common Selenium-related error is a result of poor synchronization.” A fixed sleep may seem to help temporarily, but it can still be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
Use an explicit wait for the condition the test actually needs: a particular DOM state, a visible application element, or a known completion signal. For example, with Selenium’s Python binding:
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 20)
ready = wait.until(
EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, '#app-ready'))
)
Replace #app-ready with a selector that represents readiness in your application. Choose a condition that reflects the interaction your test is about to perform, rather than waiting for an arbitrary amount of time or assuming that the initial document response means client-side rendering is complete. Keep browser-console and resource diagnostics enabled while debugging so a JavaScript error is not mistaken for a Selenium timing issue.

Inspect the page when its DOM or behavior is wrong
If PhantomJS reports a successful navigation but the page is blank, incomplete, or has the wrong DOM, inspect the browser’s console errors and execution path. PhantomJS supports a remote inspector: launch it with --remote-debugger-port=9000, then open the inspector from a WebKit-based browser. Use the console and breakpoints to locate script errors or code paths that never complete.
Combine the inspector with the callbacks from the standalone probe. A resource failure indicates a transfer or access problem; a JavaScript exception points toward script execution; a successful response with missing application content can indicate that the page depends on browser behavior PhantomJS does not provide. PhantomJS 2.1.1 is a legacy WebKit browser, so debugging can explain why an old test fails, but it cannot make the browser equivalent to a currently supported one.
When to stop repairing PhantomJS and migrate Selenium
Selenium’s JavaScript change log states that native PhantomJS support was removed because PhantomJS’s WebDriver implementation was no longer under active development, and directs users toward Chrome or Firefox headless mode. If a PhantomJS-specific Selenium constructor or legacy capabilities prevent a session from starting, repeated tuning of that integration is not a durable fix. Use PhantomJS diagnostics to identify a page, TLS, or network issue, then move supported automated test coverage to Chrome or Firefox.
The trade-off is practical: PhantomJS can still help isolate a legacy failure, but ongoing tests depend on an old WebKit browser and an unsupported native Selenium integration. Headless Chrome or Firefox uses Selenium’s supported browser-driver path and a more current browser engine. Migration does require updating setup and checking timing assumptions; merely swapping the browser binary will not resolve a brittle wait or an application readiness bug.

Update session setup for Selenium 4
Replace PhantomJS-specific constructors and legacy DesiredCapabilities setup with the selected browser’s Options object and W3C-compatible capabilities. Selenium’s upgrade guidance warns that non-standard, unprefixed capabilities can prevent session startup. Keep the test’s explicit waits, and review browser-specific configuration rather than carrying every PhantomJS option forward unchanged.

Use headless Chrome or Chromium
Selenium documents --headless=new as Chrome’s current full-featured headless mode. A minimal Python setup using Selenium 4 is:
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
options = Options()
options.add_argument('--headless=new')
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get('https://example.com')
print(driver.title)
finally:
driver.quit()
Replace the example URL with the site under test. Keep Chrome and ChromeDriver on matching major versions. Selenium Manager can discover or download supported Chrome, Firefox, and Edge browser/driver combinations, reducing manual PATH configuration errors.
Use Firefox headless
For Firefox, use Selenium 4 with Firefox 78 or newer and a current geckodriver, as specified in Selenium’s guidance. A minimal Python example is:
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.firefox.options import Options
options = Options()
options.add_argument('-headless')
driver = webdriver.Firefox(options=options)
try:
driver.get('https://example.com')
print(driver.title)
finally:
driver.quit()
After either migration, run the standalone page check if navigation fails, then add an explicit wait for application readiness. Preserve useful console and network diagnostics so future failures identify the failing layer.

Or skip the browser setup
If the goal is to capture a website image rather than run a Selenium interaction or browser test, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is not a replacement for Selenium test automation. It can instead return a screenshot or PDF without you managing this browser setup. The request can also omit common consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. Replace the target URL below as needed and use your API key:
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
- Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
