Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe durable fix is to stop treating navigation completion as login readiness. PhantomJS is no longer developed and its old JavaScript and TLS stack often cannot complete modern authentication pages. Move the test to maintained headless Chrome or Firefox, bound get() with a timeout, then use explicit waits for the username field, password field, submit control, and authenticated-page marker.
A fixed sleep() only guesses. A condition-based wait tells Selenium exactly what must be ready and gives you evidence when it is not.
Why a page can look loaded while the login form is not usable
readyState is not application readiness
Selenium normally waits for the document’s readyState to reach complete during navigation. Modern login pages then continue running JavaScript: a framework mounts the form, fetches configuration, inserts an anti-bot widget, or redirects through an identity provider. Therefore, a completed driver.get() call does not prove that the control your test needs exists or can be clicked. Wait for that control or for a post-login marker instead. This is the distinction made in Selenium’s waiting guidance.
PhantomJS is an additional compatibility risk
The PhantomJS project homepage says, “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” A Selenium warning reproduced in a technical report says support for PhantomJS has been deprecated and recommends headless Chrome or Firefox. PhantomJS 2.1.1 is listed on its historical download page, with the 2.1 release dated January 23, 2016. A site using current JavaScript, certificates, redirects, or authentication checks can expose failures that never occur in a maintained browser.

Replace PhantomJS before tuning the test
For new runs, create a Selenium session with a maintained browser driver. Port the selectors and authentication flow, then keep the same explicit-wait pattern. Choose between Chrome and Firefox based on the browser engine your users support; the available evidence does not establish a universal speed or reliability winner.
| Decision axis | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Browser engine | Does the target site support the current headless Chrome or Firefox version used in CI? |
| TLS and JavaScript | Can the browser complete the site’s certificate chain, scripts, redirects, and storage flow? |
| WebDriver support | Can your Selenium binding create and control the chosen driver consistently? |
| Diagnostics | Can you retain browser logs, screenshots, page source, and network/resource information on failure? |
| Porting effort | Can you move selectors, credentials handling, and any iframe or window switching without changing the authentication contract? |
A deterministic repair procedure
- Bound navigation. Set a page-load timeout before calling
get(). CatchTimeoutExceptionso one stalled resource cannot block the entire suite. - Wait for the actual form. Use
WebDriverWaitwith a stable locator for the username input and password input. Wait for visibility when text entry requires a rendered control; wait for clickability before pressing submit. - Wait for the authenticated state. After submission, wait for a URL change, a stable element on the signed-in page, or disappearance of the login form. Do not infer success merely because a click returned.
- Capture evidence on timeout. Save
current_url, page source, a screenshot, driver/browser logs, and request or resource errors. This separates a TLS handshake problem from a redirect loop, JavaScript exception, blocked third-party request, missing cookie, or an element lookup that happened too early.
Minimal Python pattern
Adapt the URL, credentials, and locators to your application. The code deliberately continues after a navigation timeout only when the resulting DOM is useful; otherwise fail the test after saving diagnostics.
from selenium.common.exceptions import TimeoutException
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
# Prefer a maintained webdriver.Chrome() or webdriver.Firefox() for new work.
driver.set_page_load_timeout(20)
try:
driver.get(login_url)
except TimeoutException:
driver.save_screenshot('navigation-timeout.png')
with open('navigation-timeout.html', 'w', encoding='utf-8') as f:
f.write(driver.page_source)
# Continue only if the DOM is usable; otherwise raise here.
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 20)
username = wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.NAME, 'username')))
password = wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.NAME, 'password')))
username.send_keys(user)
password.send_keys(secret)
wait.until(EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button[type='submit']"))).click()
wait.until(EC.url_changes(login_url))
The 20-second values are examples, not universal requirements. Set them from observed startup and authentication times in your environment, with enough margin for normal network variance.

Handle HTTPS and TLS failures separately
If HTTP succeeds but the HTTPS login hangs or fails, inspect the handshake, certificate path, and browser/driver logs before changing waits. Historical PhantomJS reports describe SSLv3 defaults causing failures after sites disabled SSLv3; reported legacy switches included --ssl-protocol=tlsv1 or --ssl-protocol=any, along with upgrading to at least PhantomJS 1.9.8. Those switches are compatibility workarounds for an obsolete browser, not a modern security recommendation. Migrating to maintained Chrome or Firefox is safer than weakening certificate or protocol checks.
Check proxy and network behavior
On Windows, PhantomJS troubleshooting documentation reports that an inherited default proxy can create extreme latency and lists --proxy-type=none as a workaround. Confirm the proxy policy used by your CI runner rather than assuming the local desktop configuration applies. Enable request/resource logging and record the URL, status, and timing of the last successful and first failing request. Change one network variable at a time so the cause remains identifiable.
Configure PhantomJS before navigation (legacy runs only)
If you must keep an old regression job temporarily, set browser properties before opening the login URL. The PhantomJS API exposes javascriptEnabled, userAgent, HTTP-authentication userName and password, resourceTimeout, and webSecurityEnabled. Its documentation states that these settings apply to the initial page.open call. A late change cannot repair a request that was already made with the wrong settings.

Use webSecurityEnabled changes only as a narrowly scoped diagnostic; disabling web security can conceal cross-origin defects and should not be the production fix. Keep JavaScript enabled for a JavaScript login, set an intentional user agent when the application requires one, and configure HTTP authentication before navigation. Plan removal of this job because PhantomJS development is suspended.
Choose a page-load strategy deliberately
Selenium exposes three page-load strategies. The strategy changes when navigation hands control back; it does not replace waits for the controls your test uses.
| Strategy | Navigation returns after | Use when | Required discipline |
|---|---|---|---|
normal |
The load event and dependent resources have finished. | You want the most conservative handoff and third-party assets normally settle. | Still wait for the login control and authenticated marker. |
eager |
DOMContentLoaded. |
Images or nonessential resources keep a normal navigation open. | Explicitly wait for every element or script result you consume. |
none |
After the initial download begins. | Your harness manages readiness itself and can tolerate an immediately returned get(). |
Every interaction needs a condition-based wait; otherwise races become more likely. |
Changing to eager or none can shorten the handoff, but it cannot fix a broken TLS handshake, a redirect loop, or a JavaScript exception.

Diagnose the symptom instead of adding sleeps
| Observed symptom | Likely branch | Next action |
|---|---|---|
get() times out and the URL is unchanged |
Slow or blocked resource, proxy delay, or TLS failure. | Record the URL, resource log, certificate error, and proxy configuration; then retry with a maintained browser. |
| URL changes but no username field appears | JavaScript exception, wrong frame, redirect still in progress, or selector mismatch. | Save page source and console logs; verify the final URL and wait for the framework-mounted control. |
| Form is visible but submit is not clickable | An overlay, disabled state, or asynchronous validation is still active. | Wait for clickability, inspect overlays, and wait for the validation condition rather than sleeping. |
| Submit returns but authentication is not established | Redirect, cookie, storage, or identity-provider step has not completed. | Wait for a signed-in URL or page marker and inspect cookies/redirects in the browser logs. |
| Only HTTPS fails in PhantomJS | Obsolete SSL/TLS or certificate handling. | Treat old protocol flags as temporary diagnostics and migrate the test. |
| Failures are intermittent across runners | Proxy, DNS, resource timing, or an unbounded asynchronous dependency. | Keep per-request timing and browser logs, use bounded waits, and compare runner network policy. |
Reliability and performance practices
- Use one explicit wait object with a timeout appropriate to the environment; do not scatter arbitrary sleeps through the test.
- Prefer stable attributes such as a name, ID, or test-specific data attribute over presentation classes that change with redesigns.
- Wait for the smallest condition that proves the next action is safe. Waiting for an entire page to become idle can be slower and less reliable when analytics or chat requests never finish.
- Keep navigation, element, and authentication timeouts visible in test output so a regression shows which boundary was exceeded.
- Redact passwords, tokens, authorization headers, and sensitive page content from saved logs and screenshots.
- When a timeout occurs, preserve the first failure artifacts before retrying. A retry without evidence can hide a deterministic TLS or selector defect.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a reference image or PDF of a login page rather than an interactive login test, ScreenshotNeo provides a single HTTP request. Its cleaner accepts cookie/consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. This cURL request returns a WebP image:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same endpoint can be called from Python:
import requests
r = requests.get('https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot', params={'access_key': 'YOUR_API_KEY', 'url': 'https://stripe.com'}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open('shot.webp', 'wb').write(r.content)
Or from Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
Relevant capture controls include full-page screenshots with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay, or network idle, blocking ads/trackers/requests/resource types, custom headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Common screenshot-API parameter names also work when switching.

FAQ
What if the login form is inside an iframe?
Wait for the iframe element, switch into it with Selenium’s frame API, and then locate the username and password controls. After authentication, switch back to the default content before checking a page-level success marker.
Should I disable browser security to make PhantomJS pass?
No. Security-disabling flags can hide the cross-origin or certificate problem your users will encounter. Use them only for a short diagnostic experiment, capture the evidence, and move the flow to maintained Chrome or Firefox.
