“Edge DevTools MCP” usually means configuring the Chrome DevTools MCP server to control Microsoft Edge or a WebView2 app. It is not a separately documented Microsoft product with that exact name. The server gives an MCP-capable coding agent browser automation, debugging and performance-analysis tools through Edge’s Chromium-compatible DevTools Protocol. Microsoft’s setup guide lists Node.js (latest LTS), npm, an installed Edge channel and an MCP-capable coding agent as prerequisites.
This guide explains the three supported connection models, complete client configuration, profile-security implications, screenshots, WebView2 setup and fixes for the errors most likely to stop a connection.
What Edge DevTools MCP actually is
Microsoft describes Chrome DevTools MCP as a Model Context Protocol server that gives an AI coding assistant access to “the full power of Microsoft Edge DevTools for reliable automation, in-depth debugging, and performance analysis.” The npm package is named chrome-devtools-mcp; the browser target can be Chrome, Edge or a Chromium-based WebView2 host.
The compatibility layer is Edge’s DevTools Protocol. Microsoft states that “The Microsoft Edge DevTools Protocol matches the APIs of the Chrome DevTools Protocol.” The server uses Puppeteer and can either launch a browser itself or discover an already-running debugging endpoint.

Prerequisites and a safe starting setup
- Node.js, preferably the current LTS release, with npm.
- An installed Microsoft Edge channel (Stable, Beta, Dev or Canary).
- An MCP-capable client such as VS Code with an agent, Copilot CLI, Claude, Cursor or another client that supports local stdio MCP servers.
- A project or terminal in which
npx -y chrome-devtools-mcp@latestcan run.
For the least risk, begin with a newly launched or isolated browser profile rather than your everyday signed-in profile. Confirm the Edge executable path for your operating system and channel; installation paths can differ because of policy, per-user installation and channel choice.

Option 1: let MCP launch Edge
Find the Edge binary for your channel, then place its path in your MCP client configuration. Microsoft’s examples use a stdio server command like this:

Stable commonly lives under a MicrosoftEdge application directory, but verify the path on your machine instead of copying a location blindly. On macOS, point to the Edge executable inside the Microsoft Edge application bundle; on Linux, use the installed microsoft-edge binary or channel-specific executable.

A VS Code-style configuration has a servers object and type: "stdio". The exact file location and surrounding schema depend on your VS Code version and extension. A Copilot CLI configuration instead uses mcpServers and type: "local". Other clients generally use an mcpServers wrapper without a type field. Follow the selected client’s current configuration documentation for the file location and wrapper; the command itself remains:

npx -y chrome-devtools-mcp@latestAfter saving the configuration, restart or reload the client. Ask the agent to navigate to a test page, for example: Navigate to https://contoso.com and take a screenshot, or Take a snapshot of the current page.
Option 2: attach to an existing Edge session
Use this when the page is already open, authenticated or in a carefully prepared profile. Start Edge with remote debugging enabled, or enable remote debugging through edge://inspect. Then pass the matching profile directory and auto-connect flag:
npx -y chrome-devtools-mcp@latest --autoConnect --user-data-dir="/path/to/edge-user-data"The server uses the browser’s DevToolsActivePort information to find the running endpoint. The underlying protocol can also be inspected directly: a debugging-enabled Edge instance exposes targets through /json/list, where each target includes a webSocketDebuggerUrl.

Auto-connecting gives the agent the active browser session. That can include logged-in accounts, cookies and other information available through page JavaScript. Use this mode only with an agent and prompts you trust. Do not open banking, administration or private-work pages while an untrusted or experimental agent is attached. A separate browser profile limits accidental mixing; --isolated is useful for a fresh run, but it is not a complete security guarantee.
Option 3: connect to a WebView2 host
- Enable remote debugging for the host’s WebView2 instance using the host’s supported configuration.
- Locate the WebView2 user-data directory. Microsoft notes that the relevant profile commonly uses an
EBWebViewsuffix; append it when deriving the directory from application source code if required. - Pass that directory to MCP with
--autoConnectand--user-data-dir. - Restart the host after changing its debugging or registry configuration.
- Ask the agent to inspect the app and verify that the intended WebView target appears.
For Windows hosts, verify that the registry key used to enable debugging matches the host executable name exactly. A mismatch prevents the WebView2 instance from exposing the endpoint even when the MCP command is correct.

Useful agent tasks after connection
Once attached, use explicit tasks rather than vague requests:
- “Navigate to
https://example.com, report console errors and take a screenshot.” - “Take a snapshot of the current page and identify the element containing the checkout total.”
- “Reload the page, inspect failed network requests and explain the first JavaScript error.”
- “Measure the page performance, identify the largest expensive resource and suggest a fix.”
- “In the WebView2 app, inspect the current document and report the active URL and visible headings.”
Keep destructive actions explicit: require confirmation before submitting forms, deleting data, changing production settings or navigating away from a valuable session.

Common errors and fixes
“Could not connect to Chrome”
- Confirm Edge is running when using auto-connect.
- Confirm remote debugging is enabled.
- Check that
--user-data-dirpoints to the profile for the same Edge channel that is running. - Look for the
DevToolsActivePortfile in that profile. - Close conflicting Edge processes and restart the intended channel.
Edge cannot be found
Replace the guessed executable with the verified full path. In JSON, escape Windows backslashes or use forward slashes where accepted. Make sure the path is for Edge, not Chrome, and for the channel you intend to automate.
Connection works but the wrong profile opens
Use the exact user-data directory for the running channel. A profile subdirectory such as Default is not always the user-data root expected by the server. Shut down other Edge instances before retrying so the endpoint is unambiguous.
WebView2 does not appear
Check the registry key against the host executable name, restart the host after setting it, and verify that the supplied profile path ends in EBWebView. Also confirm that debugging was enabled for the WebView2 instance rather than only for a separate browser.

The client ignores the server
Validate the client’s wrapper and server type. VS Code examples use servers with type: "stdio"; Copilot CLI uses mcpServers with type: "local"; many other clients use mcpServers without a type. Restart the client after editing JSON and check its MCP log for parse errors.

Reliability, performance and operational notes
A launched browser is easier to reproduce because its executable, viewport and optional isolated context are explicit. An attached profile is more convenient for authenticated workflows but depends on the browser remaining open and on the correct debugging endpoint. WebView2 adds a host restart and profile-discovery step. For repeatable tests, pin the target URL, viewport, profile strategy and client configuration; avoid relying on whichever tab happens to be active.
Headless mode reduces desktop overhead, while a fixed viewport makes screenshots and layout assertions comparable. Isolated runs avoid stale cookies and extensions. Conversely, authenticated tests require deliberate session seeding and should be separated from production credentials.

Do not confuse DevTools MCP with WebMCP
Microsoft’s September 21, 2026 Edge Developer Blog describes an implementation of the WebMCP specification ready for testing. WebMCP is adjacent functionality for making sites agent-ready; it is not the Chrome DevTools MCP server described in this setup.
