Create a unique, randomly generated password for every account, and make it long: NIST’s 2025 consumer guidance recommends at least 15 characters when you must create a password. A password manager can generate and save those passwords so you do not have to remember them. Add a passkey or multi-factor authentication (MFA) where available; a strong password alone cannot stop phishing or malware.
What makes a generated password strong?
A strong password is long, random and unique to one account. CISA identifies all three qualities as essential. Length gives a password more possible combinations; randomness makes it harder to guess; uniqueness prevents a breach at one service from exposing your other accounts.
For a password you create or generate, use at least 15 characters if the service accepts them, following NIST’s 2025 consumer guidance. If a service sets a length limit, use the longest length it accepts. NIST’s current SP 800-63B-4 says services should support passwords of at least 64 characters, which also accommodates passphrases.
Do not reuse passwords. A password that is unique to one account limits the damage if that service is breached. Avoid names, usernames, service names, dates, keyboard sequences and passwords that have appeared in breaches. NIST says services should block common, expected and compromised passwords.

How to generate a strong random password
- Use a password manager’s generator. Choose one that can generate and autofill long, unique passwords. CISA recommends password managers because they address the difficulty of remembering passwords that are long, random and different for each account.
- Select secure random generation. If the generator offers a cryptographically secure random mode, use it. Avoid making up a password yourself or modifying an old one with a predictable suffix.
- Set the length. Aim for at least 15 characters where accepted. If the service permits more, a longer password is a sound choice; if it imposes a limit, use the maximum allowed.
- Make it unique. Generate a different password for every account. Let the manager save it to the correct login entry and autofill it later.
- Check the service’s constraints. If it rejects certain symbols or characters, adjust the generator to exclude them, then regenerate without reducing the length unnecessarily.
- Protect the account behind the vault. Enable MFA or a passkey for your password manager and for important services that support them.
Should a password contain symbols, numbers and mixed case?
Length and randomness matter more than satisfying a checklist of character types. NIST cautions that forced composition rules can encourage predictable substitutions, such as replacing a letter with a familiar symbol. Its guidance says services should not impose those composition rules.
If a website requires a number, uppercase letter or symbol, configure the generator to meet that requirement while keeping the password long. Treat those rules as compatibility requirements, not as a reason to shorten a password or reuse one that already works elsewhere. When a site allows spaces, a passphrase is also an option.
When should you use a passphrase?
A passphrase is useful when you need to remember a password, especially the master password that unlocks your password manager. Choose several unrelated words rather than a familiar quotation, lyric or phrase. Length is still central: NIST’s consumer guidance gives “cassette lava baby” as an 18-character illustration, but explicitly published examples should not be reused as real passwords.
CISA’s 2025 organizational policy guidance gives 16 or more characters or five to seven unrelated words as an example. That is an example for organizational policy, not a substitute for a service’s own constraints or a universal rule for every account.

For ordinary website logins, a password manager can generate and store a random string, so memorability is usually unnecessary. Reserve a memorable passphrase for credentials you genuinely need to type or remember.
How to choose a password manager
Compare how a manager stores and syncs your vault, how you recover access, and how it handles everyday login tasks. CISA notes that cloud vaults are convenient across devices but reside on infrastructure you do not control; a local vault reduces that exposure but requires dependable backups.
- Storage and sync: Decide whether you need automatic cloud synchronization across devices or prefer local storage and can manage backups reliably.
- Recovery: Understand what happens if you lose your device or forget the master password. Keep recovery information somewhere safe and separate from the vault.
- MFA: Check that you can protect the manager account with MFA or a passkey.
- Autofill: Confirm it supports the browsers and devices you use and can autofill without forcing you to keep passwords in an unprotected document.
- Generator: Make sure it can create long, unique passwords and adjust character choices for sites with restrictions.
- Backups: If you choose local storage, ensure you have a usable, protected backup and know how to restore it.
Add MFA or a passkey
A password is one layer, not the entire defense. Enable MFA or a passkey for your password manager and important accounts. NIST lists security keys such as USB dongles, authenticator apps, push notifications and text codes among MFA methods. Where available, use the option that fits the service and your circumstances; a passkey can serve as an alternative to password-based sign-in.
Protect the recovery route too. Keep backup codes or other recovery details in a safe location, and make sure you can still reach them if your phone or security key is lost. Do not store recovery codes in an unprotected note alongside the account password.

What a strong password cannot prevent
A randomly generated password cannot stop every account takeover. Phishing can trick you into entering it on a fake site; keystroke-logging malware can capture what you type; social engineering can persuade you to disclose credentials or approve a login. NIST notes that these attacks can work against even long, complex passwords.
Check the site address before entering credentials, be wary of unexpected login or MFA prompts, and do not approve a sign-in you did not initiate. Keep your device and browser protected, and use MFA or a passkey so a stolen password alone is less likely to be enough.
Common password-generation problems
The site rejects the generated password
Some services have character restrictions or length limits. Read the error, adjust the generator to exclude unsupported characters, and generate a new password at the longest accepted length. Do not fall back to a password used on another account.
You cannot remember the password
That is expected for a random password. Save it directly into your password manager’s entry for the service and use autofill. Do not put it in an unprotected text file or send it to yourself in a message.

You are locked out of your password manager
Use the manager’s documented recovery process and the recovery information you saved when setting it up. If you use a local vault, restore from a protected backup. Before relying on any recovery method, understand whether it can restore the vault or only let you create a new account.
You received an MFA request you did not start
Do not approve it. It may indicate that someone has your password or is trying to access the account. Change the password from the service’s legitimate website, review active sessions and recovery details, and secure the account with MFA or a passkey.

FAQ
How often should I change a password?
Do not change a strong, unique password on a routine schedule just for the sake of rotating it. Change it if you believe it has been exposed, if a service requires a change, or if you discover reuse or another compromise.
Can I use the same password for two low-risk accounts?
No. Uniqueness matters across accounts because you may not know which service will be breached or how attackers will use exposed credentials.
Are password managers safer than remembering passwords?
They make it practical to use long, random, unique passwords instead of reusing or simplifying passwords to remember them. Choose a manager with suitable storage, recovery and MFA options, then protect its master account carefully.
