YouTube currently recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels (16:9) for standard video thumbnails and 2160 × 3840 pixels (9:16) for Shorts. Google’s video-search minimum is different: 60 × 30 pixels, with larger images preferred. For ordinary web pages, provide responsive image variants rather than forcing one oversized file onto every screen.
Choose thumbnail dimensions for the place they will appear
“Thumbnail size” can mean the dimensions of an image you upload, a preview image returned by an API, a minimum that makes a video eligible for a search feature, or the size of an image displayed in a web page. Those numbers answer different questions. Start with the destination and its aspect ratio; then consider how large the image will render, the crop, and any platform-specific limits.

YouTube’s current Help guidance recommends that a custom thumbnail image “should be as large as possible.” That does not make one upload dimension appropriate for every placement: its standard video and Shorts recommendations use different orientations, and its podcast playlist guidance specifies a different ratio.
YouTube: use the right orientation and distinguish uploads from API previews
Standard videos
For a standard YouTube video custom thumbnail, the Help page recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels in a 16:9 ratio and gives a minimum width of 640 pixels. JPG and PNG are listed formats. The same guidance says upload limits differ by device, so check the current upload interface or Help page if a file is rejected; a pixel dimension alone does not establish that a file meets its size limit.

Shorts and podcast playlists
For a YouTube Shorts custom thumbnail, the recommendation is 2160 × 3840 pixels, a vertical 9:16 image, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. Podcast playlist thumbnails use a square 1:1 ratio instead of 16:9. Avoid designing one horizontal graphic and assuming it will crop cleanly into vertical or square placements. Keep the subject and any essential text inside the area that remains visible after the destination crops or scales the image.
API-returned thumbnail variants
The YouTube Data API lists typical video variants at 120 × 90 (default), 320 × 180 (medium), 480 × 360 (high), 640 × 480 (standard), and 1280 × 720 (maxres). These are thumbnail resources an API response may expose; they are not a creator upload target. Some variants may be absent, and the dimensions can vary with the resource and original image. In particular, 1280 × 720 is a typical API “maxres” variant, while YouTube’s current Help recommendation for a custom video-thumbnail upload is 3840 × 2160. The two figures describe different things.
Google video search has an eligibility minimum, not a general web rule
Google’s video guidance sets a minimum thumbnail size of 60 × 30 pixels and says larger is preferred. It also calls for a stable image URL that Googlebot can access. Formats listed in that guidance are BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF. This minimum concerns Google video search eligibility and crawl access; it is not a recommendation for YouTube uploads, Open Graph images, or ordinary page thumbnails.

If Google cannot fetch the image reliably, making it larger will not address the access problem. Use an image URL that remains stable and is not blocked from Googlebot. For metadata images more broadly, Google Search Central advises choosing relevant, representative imagery rather than generic images such as a site logo, and avoiding extreme aspect ratios.
For a normal web page, serve responsive image sources
There is no single fixed pixel dimension established for every web thumbnail. The right source depends on the image’s rendered size, the screen’s pixel density, and the crop required by the layout. A browser can select among image sources when you provide responsive alternatives with srcset or <picture>, while retaining a fallback src.
Example with width-based srcset
For a card that displays an image at different widths, provide files sized for the likely rendered widths and describe them with width descriptors. The browser uses those candidates together with the declared rendered size:

>The values in srcset describe the actual pixel widths of those files; sizes describes the layout width at relevant viewport sizes. Adjust the file names, candidates, and layout expression to match your own images and CSS. A fallback src remains in place for browsers and contexts that do not use the candidate list.
When picture is the better fit
Use <picture> when you need art direction, such as a different crop or composition on a narrow screen, or when selecting among formats. It lets you provide alternate sources while the nested <img> supplies the fallback and alternative text:

</picture>Use a composition that represents the page or video rather than an unrelated decorative image. Google’s image guidance identifies descriptive alt text as important metadata for an image. Write alt text that describes the image’s relevant content; do not use it as a place to repeat keywords.

Open Graph images do not have one universal required size
The Open Graph protocol defines the og:image property and optional width and height metadata, but it does not establish one universal thumbnail dimension for all social or sharing surfaces. The receiving service controls its presentation, and its display can change. Follow the current requirements of the share destination where a particular preview matters; do not treat a common image ratio as a protocol-wide mandate.
How to pick and prepare the file
- Identify the destination. Decide whether the image is for a YouTube upload, a YouTube API preview, Google video search, a page card, or a share preview. Apply guidance for that specific surface.
- Match the ratio before exporting. Start with the destination’s orientation: for example, 16:9 for standard YouTube video custom thumbnails, 9:16 for Shorts, and 1:1 for podcast playlist thumbnails.
- Design for the crop and rendered size. Keep the subject and important text away from edges that may be cropped. For a responsive page, create source variants suited to the sizes the layout actually displays.
- Check the file as well as its dimensions. A platform may have upload limits that vary by device. Use a listed or supported format for the destination and check its current requirements if an upload fails.
- Make metadata images representative and accessible. Use a stable, crawlable URL when the image is intended for Google video results. For page metadata, choose relevant imagery and avoid extreme aspect ratios.
- Inspect at the actual placement. Preview the image in the target layout or platform, checking legibility, crop, and clarity at the size readers will see—not only at full resolution in an image editor.
Preview a web page’s thumbnail in context
A browser screenshot can help you inspect how an image appears in its page layout, but it does not replace selecting the correct image dimensions, configuring responsive sources, or checking a platform’s upload rules. For a quick local check, open the page in your browser at the viewport you want to evaluate and capture the visible layout with the browser’s screenshot function. For automated checks, use a browser-automation setup to open the page and capture the relevant viewport or element; the exact commands depend on the browser tooling in your project.

Common thumbnail-size problems and fixes
- The image looks soft on a high-density display: supply a higher-resolution responsive candidate where the layout needs it, rather than stretching a small source. Keep the declared widths in
srcsetconsistent with the actual files. - The subject or text is cut off: check the destination’s ratio and crop, then reposition key content within the visible area. A 16:9 image is not interchangeable with a 9:16 or 1:1 placement.
- A YouTube upload is rejected: confirm the custom-thumbnail guidance for the specific format and the device-specific upload cap. The recommended pixel dimensions do not by themselves prove the file satisfies every upload constraint.
- A YouTube API response lacks the expected size: treat variants as resource-dependent outputs. The API documentation says some may be absent and dimensions can vary; do not assume every video has a 1280 × 720 image.
- A Google video thumbnail does not appear: check that the image URL is stable and accessible to Googlebot, then verify the image is at least 60 × 30 pixels and uses a listed format. The minimum does not guarantee a search appearance.
- A share preview has an unexpected crop: inspect the consuming service’s current presentation and image requirements. Open Graph fields do not impose a universal pixel size or guarantee identical rendering across services.
- A page downloads unnecessarily large images: check whether responsive candidates and an accurate
sizesvalue are supplied. A large source can be useful for a large display, but it need not be the only file offered.
