Firefox headless automation runs the browser without a visible window. Your test or script still controls a normal Firefox session through a W3C WebDriver client (such as Selenium) and geckodriver, the small HTTP server that translates WebDriver commands for Gecko. Install compatible versions, make geckodriver discoverable, enable headless mode, run a minimal navigation test, and inspect driver logs when session creation fails.
What “headless Firefox” means
Headless is a display mode, not an automation protocol. Firefox starts with no graphical window, which is useful on CI workers, servers and containers. Automation comes from a separate WebDriver client. The client sends W3C WebDriver requests to geckodriver; geckodriver starts Firefox and translates those requests to Firefox’s remote protocol. Selenium is one client option, while any conforming W3C WebDriver client can work.
Mozilla documents the --headless command-line option for Windows, Linux (GTK) and macOS. In testing environments, the equivalent environment variable is MOZ_HEADLESS; MOZ_HEADLESS_WIDTH and MOZ_HEADLESS_HEIGHT set virtual display dimensions. Headless mode does not remove browser security checks, JavaScript execution or normal page-loading behavior.
Prerequisites and compatibility
- Install Firefox for the operating system that will run the job.
- Install geckodriver and a Selenium or other W3C WebDriver client.
- Make the geckodriver executable available on
PATH, or configure its absolute path in your client. - Use Mozilla’s support table to check the exact combination before pinning versions. At the time covered by that table, entries include geckodriver 0.37.1 and 0.37.0, Selenium 3.11 or later, Python 3.14 or later as shown there, and Firefox 115 ESR or later.
The support table is a point-in-time compatibility guide, not a promise that every WebDriver feature is implemented. Mozilla also cautions that geckodriver is not yet fully WebDriver-conformant or completely Selenium-compatible. Recheck the table whenever Firefox, Selenium or geckodriver is upgraded.

Install and verify the components
Find the installed versions
Run the version commands on the same machine or container that will execute automation:
firefox --version
geckodriver --version
python --versionOn systems where Firefox is not on PATH, locate its binary and provide that path through your client’s Firefox options. Do the same for geckodriver if your client cannot discover it automatically.
Keep driver discovery reproducible
Using PATH is convenient for a developer workstation. An explicit driver path (or a pinned driver supplied by your build image) is more reproducible in CI. Do not place multiple incompatible geckodriver binaries earlier on PATH; the first one found is the one your client starts.
Enable headless mode with Selenium (Python example)
The following is a compact pattern for the Python Selenium binding. It demonstrates the WebDriver relationship; adapt driver installation and paths to your environment rather than assuming a particular package manager. This example is a template to validate in your own project.

driver.quit()Install the Selenium binding in the project’s normal way, then run this small navigation check before adding clicks or waits. A successful title and URL show that Firefox, geckodriver, the client and the network can create a session together. If your Selenium release requires an explicit service or executable path, configure that according to its binding documentation.
Command-line headless check
For a quick display-free smoke test that does not exercise WebDriver, Firefox can capture a page directly:
firefox --headless --screenshot page.png --window-size 1366,900 https://example.comMozilla’s command-line reference documents --screenshot and --window-size width[,height]. This route is useful for a one-off image, but it cannot replace WebDriver when your workflow must find elements, click, type, wait or inspect state.
Control dimensions, timing and page state
Viewport and full-page behavior
Set a deterministic window size before navigation when layout, screenshots or responsive breakpoints matter. A headless viewport is still subject to CSS media queries, device-pixel scaling and page scripts. For long pages, a WebDriver client can scroll and capture regions; direct command-line screenshots are a simpler alternative when no interaction is needed.

Wait for the page you actually need
Do not rely only on a fixed sleep. Prefer your binding’s explicit wait for a selector, state or condition that proves the application is ready. A network response can finish while a single-page app is still rendering; conversely, a long sleep wastes CI time. Keep waits bounded and report the URL and condition that timed out.
Use a clean session by default
Geckodriver normally creates a temporary throwaway profile and removes it when the session expires. This isolates cookies, extensions and preferences between tests. Always call quit() in a finally block so normal runs release the profile and browser process.
Profiles: temporary, prepared and custom
When the temporary profile is best
Use the default profile for repeatable tests, parallel jobs and security-sensitive automation. It avoids accidentally importing a developer’s cookies, extensions or saved passwords.
When to supply a prepared profile
A custom profile is appropriate when a test needs fixed preferences, certificates or preloaded state. You can pass profile data through Firefox arguments or an encoded profile capability supported by your client. Mozilla’s profile documentation notes a Marionette-port caveat with the documented --profile route; explicitly set the port when using that approach. Interrupted sessions can leave temporary profiles behind, so clean them during CI teardown if disk usage grows.

Container-packaged Firefox (Snap or Flatpak)
On Ubuntu 22.04 and later, Mozilla documents a failure mode in which container-packaged Firefox and geckodriver see different filesystems. Firefox may hang during startup because it cannot access the temporary profile geckodriver created. Read the usage guidance and flags reference for the current packaging details.
- Run Firefox and geckodriver in matching execution environments when possible.
- Set
--profile-rootto a directory that both processes can read and write. - Confirm the Firefox binary path and geckodriver path explicitly when packaging changes the defaults.
- Verify permissions and available space in the shared profile directory.
A filesystem mismatch can look like a generic timeout, so check driver logs before changing application waits.
Run geckodriver directly and collect logs
Geckodriver is an HTTP server and can be started separately from the client:
geckodriver -vv-v enables debug logging and -vv enables trace-level output. By default it listens on 127.0.0.1 and applies host/origin restrictions; review the flags documentation before exposing or proxying it. Capture logs as CI artifacts, but remove cookies, authorization headers and page data before sharing them.

The --allow-system-access flag is intended for browser UI testing beginning with Firefox 138. It gives WebDriver clients privileges comparable to the Firefox UI process, including full system access. Do not add it to ordinary headless scraping or test jobs; use it only when the specific UI test requires those privileges.
Troubleshooting checklist

Operational choices for reliable automation
- Client: choose Selenium or another W3C client that fits your language and existing test framework.
- Driver location: use
PATHfor simplicity or an explicit, pinned path for reproducible builds. - Profile: use throwaway profiles for isolation; prepared profiles only when their state is part of the test.
- Packaging: conventional installs reduce filesystem surprises; container-packaged Firefox requires shared profile access.
- Parallelism: give each worker its own profile root, temporary directory and geckodriver port.
- Security: keep geckodriver bound to localhost, avoid real credentials in profiles, and reserve elevated system access for dedicated UI tests.

Yes. Geckodriver exposes the WebDriver HTTP API, so another client that conforms to the W3C WebDriver protocol can control it.
Should I use --allow-system-access?
Only for a specific browser-UI test that needs Firefox-UI privileges. It is not a general headless performance switch.
Why does a custom profile make runs less reliable?
Persistent state, locked files and profile-path visibility can introduce interference. Start with isolated temporary profiles and add only the state your test requires.
