To speed up wkhtmltopdf, first remove work the page does not need: disable JavaScript or images only when the PDF does not depend on them, and tune the JavaScript delay only after checking when the page is ready. For batches of separate pages, test --read-args-from-stdin to reduce repeated process-startup overhead. There is no documented universal speed gain: benchmark your own pages and verify the PDFs still contain the expected content.
Start by identifying what is slow
wkhtmltopdf converts HTML to PDF using Qt WebKit; it is a command-line HTML-to-PDF tool, not a browser screenshot API. The project describes it at wkhtmltopdf.org. Before changing flags, determine whether time is going into loading the page, waiting for JavaScript, rendering images, or repeatedly starting the program. These causes call for different changes.
Use a representative set of inputs, including pages with the most scripts, images, and dynamic content. Record the command, elapsed time, output size, page count, and whether the resulting PDF is correct. Compare a baseline with one change at a time; combining several changes makes it harder to tell which one helped or what broke. Measure more than one run and distinguish the first run from subsequent runs, since a single timing can be misleading.
Check your installed version and build first
Run wkhtmltopdf --version in the same environment that performs production conversions. Record the output alongside benchmark results. The project downloads page lists 0.12.6 as its stable series and gives June 11, 2020 as its release date; that page does not establish that every currently available package is identical. Features can differ by build. The project explains that some functionality depends on patched Qt, while distribution packages may omit those features. The Debian Bullseye manual also documents build-related differences. Check the help output and test the exact option with your installed binary rather than assuming another machine’s command behaves the same. Reduce JavaScript and image work only when safe
Disable JavaScript for static pages
JavaScript is enabled by default in the documented options. If your source HTML is already complete and does not rely on scripts to insert text, calculate values, or alter layout, test --disable-javascript. For a local file, a baseline and a JavaScript-disabled run look like this:
wkhtmltopdf input.html baseline.pdf
wkhtmltopdf --disable-javascript input.html no-js.pdfCompare the PDFs before adopting the second command. A shorter conversion is not a successful optimization if a script-generated chart, table, or other required content disappears. If the page relies on JavaScript, leave it enabled and investigate readiness timing instead.
Disable images only when the PDF does not need them
Images are loaded by default. When images are decorative or irrelevant to the output, try --no-images:

wkhtmltopdf --no-images input.html text-only.pdfThis may reduce image loading and rendering work, but it also removes images from the PDF. Check that logos, diagrams, product pictures, and other required visual content remain available before using this option for a real workload.
The official usage reference documents these options and JavaScript delay controls: wkhtmltopdf usage documentation. It does not give a universal timing improvement for turning off scripts or images.
Tune JavaScript delay against actual page readiness
The --javascript-delay option controls how long wkhtmltopdf waits after loading before it proceeds with rendering. Reducing an unnecessarily long wait can help pages that finish populating promptly. Reducing the delay too far can produce incomplete output when asynchronous content is still arriving. The documentation exposes the option but does not prescribe one best delay for all sites.
Use the delay option supported by your binary and compare a few measured values against the current setting. Keep the page, machine, and other options constant. For each result, check the rendered text, images, layout, page count, and any content generated by scripts. If output varies between runs, treat that as a readiness or consistency problem rather than assuming the fastest result is acceptable. Do not disable JavaScript simply to avoid waiting when the page needs its scripts to produce the intended PDF.

Reduce repeated startup overhead for batches
When converting many separate pages, launching wkhtmltopdf once per page may make process startup a significant part of total time. The Debian Bullseye manual documents --read-args-from-stdin as an option to address repeated startup overhead. Compare ordinary invocations with this mode using the same set of pages and the same build; it is a batch-invocation approach, not a guaranteed throughput multiplier.

Confirm that each input and output is paired as intended, and that one bad input does not lead your calling process to misattribute later output files. If your workload is one large HTML document rather than many independent pages, this option does not remove rendering work inside that document.
For a fair comparison, time the complete batch in both modes, not just the parent command’s launch. Use the same inputs, output destination, and concurrency conditions. Keep a record of the version and patched-Qt status with the results, because build differences can affect which behavior is available.
A repeatable tuning and validation procedure
- Capture a baseline. Run the current production command on representative pages and keep its PDFs as comparison artifacts.
- Record the environment. Save
wkhtmltopdf --version, the exact command, the operating environment, and whether the installed build provides the feature you intend to test. - Choose one change. Test
--disable-javascriptfor pages that do not need scripts,--no-imageswhere images are unnecessary, or a measured JavaScript-delay adjustment for dynamic pages. - Test batch mode separately. For multiple pages, compare repeated invocations with
--read-args-from-stdinunder otherwise equivalent conditions. - Measure more than one run. Compare elapsed time for the same inputs and note whether the first run differs from later runs. Avoid reporting one result as a general speedup.
- Validate fidelity. Compare page count, text, images, layout, and script-generated content against the baseline. Reject a faster configuration if it produces incomplete or incorrect PDFs.
- Keep the winning configuration explicit. Store the command and its required assumptions with the job configuration so a later change in input pages does not silently invalidate the optimization.
Performance claims and practical trade-offs
The reviewed official usage documentation and manual do not publish a controlled, comparable benchmark for these options. There is no defensible universal percentage improvement or documents-per-second figure to apply to every machine and page. Actual results depend on the workload and build, so time representative conversions in the deployment environment before changing expectations or capacity plans.

Every speed change trades off some work or fidelity. Disabling scripts can omit dynamic content; disabling images removes visual assets; shortening a wait can capture a page before it is complete. Batch invocation may reduce repeated startup overhead but does not make a single complex page render faster. Decide whether a change is acceptable by evaluating both elapsed time and the PDF the reader receives.

The wkhtmltopdf project status guidance points readers toward Puppeteer or wrappers for sites that use dynamic JavaScript. For report generation from HTML under your control, it names WeasyPrint or the commercial tool Prince as alternatives to evaluate. This is scenario guidance, not a published performance comparison. See the wkhtmltopdf status page.
Compare candidates using the same real requirements: whether the page needs modern or dynamic JavaScript, visual fidelity, latency and throughput measured on your workload, deployment and maintenance needs, and licensing or service cost. The cited project guidance does not provide a like-for-like benchmark across these tools, so do not infer a speed ranking from the recommendations alone.
Keep untrusted input isolated
The project explicitly warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server you are running it on!” Its status guidance also recommends considering AppArmor or SELinux. Performance tuning is not a reason to remove input sanitization or process isolation. Read the warning and project guidance at wkhtmltopdf status.
