It does not scrape or interpret pages for you: your client code still navigates, interacts with the page, and extracts the data. Start with Standalone mode on one computer; add Nodes only when your workload needs more capacity or browser and operating-system coverage.
What Selenium Grid does—and what it does not do
Grid is the remote browser execution layer in a Selenium setup. A client sends WebDriver commands to Grid, which assigns the requested browser session to a suitable execution slot. The browser then loads the site and carries out the interactions directed by your client. Selenium’s Grid documentation describes the components and deployment options.
Your scraper remains responsible for deciding which URLs to visit, locating elements, waiting for content, and extracting or storing information. Grid does not provide a data source, scraping framework, or permission to access a site. It is useful when you need browser-rendered pages, remote execution, or the ability to distribute sessions across machines and browser configurations.
How a Grid 4 request is routed
In a distributed Grid, the Router receives client requests, and the New Session Queue holds requests for new sessions. The Distributor looks for a compatible slot on a Node. Nodes run the browser sessions; the Session Map records which Node owns a session ID; and the Event Bus carries internal asynchronous messages. A slot is a place a session can run, and its available browser capabilities determine which requests it can accept. This is why the browser and other capabilities requested by the client must match what the Grid can provide.

Start with Standalone mode
Standalone runs all Grid components in one process on one machine. It is the least operationally complex way to learn the remote-client pattern or run a straightforward local or CI workload. Selenium’s getting-started guide lists Java 11 or higher, a browser, browser drivers, and the Selenium Server JAR among its prerequisites. Selenium Manager can configure drivers when enabled. Requirements and commands can change between releases, so use the guide matching the Selenium Server version you install: Selenium Grid getting started.
- Install the prerequisites. Install a supported Java runtime, the browser you intend to automate, and the Selenium Server JAR. Follow the current Selenium guide for browser-driver configuration; Selenium Manager may handle driver setup when enabled.
- Start Standalone Grid. From the directory containing the downloaded JAR, run
java -jar selenium-server-<version>.jar standalone, replacing<version>with the JAR version you installed. Keep the process running while you use the Grid. - Check the endpoint. The documented default URL is
http://localhost:4444. Selenium’s browser UI and status endpoint are available at that default address. - Point a WebDriver client at Grid. Create a remote driver using the Grid URL and options for the browser available on the Grid.
Do not copy a command’s version number from an unrelated release example. The JAR filename and command should correspond to the release actually installed.
Connect a RemoteWebDriver client
The client-side pattern is consistent across Selenium language bindings: define browser options, provide the remote Grid URL, and construct a remote driver. The exact class names and syntax depend on the language and client-library version. Selenium documents the remote WebDriver approach in its Remote WebDriver guide.

import java.net.URL;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeOptions;
import org.openqa.selenium.remote.RemoteWebDriver;
public class GridScrape {
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
URL gridUrl = new URL("http://localhost:4444");
ChromeOptions options = new ChromeOptions();
RemoteWebDriver driver = new RemoteWebDriver(gridUrl, options);
try {
driver.get("https://example.com");
System.out.println(driver.getTitle());
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
The example navigates and reads a title to demonstrate the remote session; it is not a complete data-extraction strategy. Add locator logic suited to the target page, wait for the content the page actually renders, and handle missing or changing elements. Always close the session in a cleanup path such as finally, so failures do not leave browser sessions consuming Node capacity.
Other Selenium languages
For Python, JavaScript, C#, and other supported Selenium bindings, use that binding’s Remote WebDriver class or constructor, pass the Grid endpoint, and supply its browser options object. Do not copy Java syntax into another language or assume every binding uses identical constructor arguments. Keep navigation and extraction in the client; Grid runs the browser and routes the session.
Choose a deployment mode
Choose based on how many machines you need, the operating systems and browser versions to support, expected simultaneous sessions, operational overhead, and how well you need failures isolated. Selenium presents these as considerations for Grid role and size decisions; there is no universal best topology.
| Mode | Machines and placement | Browser coverage and concurrency | Operational overhead and failure isolation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone | All Grid components run in one process on one machine. | Limited to browser configurations and resources available on that machine; appropriate for a first remote session or modest workload. | Lowest setup overhead. A problem with the machine or process affects the whole Grid. |
| Hub and Node | A central entry point connects to Nodes that can run on separate machines. | Add Nodes to support more machines, operating systems, or browser versions and to increase or reduce capacity. | More setup than Standalone. Node-level placement can separate execution, but the Hub remains a shared component. |
| Distributed | Grid components are started separately, ideally on different machines, with ports and internal communication configured. | Operators can place and scale components independently to match their environment. | Most operational control and complexity; component placement can improve isolation, but each component and its connectivity must be operated. |
In Hub and Node mode, the Distributor matches a new session request to a Node slot whose capabilities fit the request. If no available slot matches, the request cannot start until the Grid can satisfy it. Add Nodes with the browser configurations your client asks for; adding machines without compatible slots will not solve a capability mismatch.

Run browser scraping responsibly
Browser automation does not make access permissible merely because a page is publicly reachable or rendered in a browser. RFC 9309 defines robots.txt rules as crawler guidance that robots are requested to honor, and explicitly says: “These rules are not a form of access authorization.” See RFC 9309. A robots.txt file—or its absence—does not independently establish legal permission, override a site’s terms, or authorize bypassing access controls.
- Review the site’s terms, applicable obligations, and access controls before running a scraper.
- Honor relevant robots.txt crawler rules; do not treat them as a permission grant.
- Do not use Grid or browser automation to evade restrictions or access controls.
- Keep your request rate and concurrency appropriate for the site and your authorization.
Protect the Grid endpoint
A Grid server is an execution service, not a harmless public webpage. Selenium warns that an exposed Grid can give third parties access to internal web applications and files or allow them to run custom binaries. Its getting-started guidance says Grid must be protected from external access using appropriate firewall permissions. Keep the endpoint private, restrict network access to trusted clients, and configure firewall rules to prevent untrusted systems from reaching it. Do not expose a local development Grid to the public internet.
Plan capacity and performance by measuring
Grid capacity depends on the number of Nodes and concurrent sessions, processor availability, the browsers supported, and the resources consumed by your pages. Selenium’s current Grid getting-started guidance gives around 1 GB of RAM per browser session as a rough reference, not a guarantee or a sizing formula; its examples may not fit a particular environment. Measure with your actual pages, browser versions, and intended concurrency before choosing a deployment size.
More Nodes can provide more places to run compatible sessions, but they do not guarantee a fixed throughput or a specific speedup. Browser startup, page rendering, network conditions, and the target site all affect how quickly a session completes. Selenium recommends considering smaller Nodes as an isolation approach in its sizing discussion; whether that helps depends on your environment. Monitor CPU, memory, session queues, and failure rates under representative workload, then adjust concurrency and Node size rather than extrapolating from a single test.

Troubleshoot common connection and session failures
Client cannot connect to Grid
Confirm the server process is running and the client’s URL points to the reachable Grid endpoint. For a local Standalone server, the documented default is http://localhost:4444. If the client runs in a container or another machine, localhost refers to that client environment, not necessarily the Grid host. Use a network-reachable address and ensure firewall rules permit trusted-client traffic.
New session request is rejected or waits
Check that the requested browser and capabilities match a slot registered with Grid. In a multi-Node deployment, verify the relevant Node is running, connected, and configured for that browser. A queue or lack of a compatible slot is a capacity or configuration problem, not something solved by changing page locators.
Browser or driver does not start
Verify the browser is installed on the machine where the Node runs and that driver setup is available for the installed browser. Follow the Selenium release’s current prerequisites and driver guidance; Selenium Manager may configure drivers when enabled. The client machine’s browser installation does not substitute for the browser needed on a remote Node.
Page loads but extracted content is absent
Grid has routed the browser session, but extraction remains client logic. The element may appear after initial navigation, have a different locator, or be unavailable under the access and rendering conditions in that session. Wait for the specific expected element or state, inspect the page and browser output, and handle absent elements explicitly instead of assuming that a successful navigation means the data is ready.

Sessions accumulate after errors
Ensure client code calls quit() after a session, including when navigation or extraction throws an exception. Unclosed sessions can occupy slots and make later requests appear to be a Grid capacity problem.
Or skip the browser setup
If your task is simply to capture a website screenshot rather than run custom browser interactions and extraction, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF and can remove cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, while paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Selenium Grid with a scraper written in a different language from the Grid setup?
Yes. Grid exposes the remote WebDriver pattern to Selenium client bindings; use the Remote WebDriver API and browser options for your language.
Does robots.txt give permission to scrape a site?
No. RFC 9309 says robots.txt rules are not access authorization. They do not replace site terms, legal obligations, or access controls.
