If a Puppeteer screenshot does not match the layout you see in Chrome, first reproduce the same rendering inputs: viewport width and height, device scale factor, headless screen, browser mode, and page state. Then inspect the computed flex layout in Chrome DevTools. Do not begin by changing justify-content or adding arbitrary offsets; the screenshot may reflect a different viewport or capture method rather than a CSS bug.

What usually causes the mismatch

Flexbox alignment is calculated from the browser’s computed layout. A small change in the inputs can therefore move every item even when the stylesheet is unchanged. The useful comparison is not “my screenshot versus my monitor,” but “expected capture versus actual capture” under identical conditions.

  • Viewport geometry: Puppeteer’s viewport width and height are CSS pixels. Its deviceScaleFactor defaults to 1; a value of 0 resets to the system default. Set both dimensions and scale explicitly when reproducing a reference image. See the Puppeteer Viewport interface.
  • Virtual screen: headless Chrome has a default 800×600 screen unless screen settings are configured. Window and screen dimensions can affect media queries, viewport units, and available layout space. See Puppeteer’s screen configuration guide and Chromium’s headless screen documentation.
  • Page state: fonts, images, web fonts, animations, responsive breakpoints, cookies, and delayed JavaScript can all change item dimensions before flex alignment is resolved.
  • Capture behavior: a full-page screenshot may use different clipping or viewport behavior from a viewport screenshot. That matters especially for vh-based containers and fixed or sticky elements.
  • Rasterization: text edges can look shifted because of operating-system, Chromium, or font-rendering differences even when the flex coordinates are equal.

1. Record both environments before changing CSS

Write down the values used for the expected image and the failing run. Include:

  • Puppeteer version and Chromium version
  • Operating system, headless or headful mode, and launch arguments
  • Viewport width, height, and device scale factor
  • Virtual screen or window-size settings
  • URL, cookies, authentication state, locale, timezone, and reduced-motion preference
  • Whether the capture is viewport-only or full-page, and when fonts and images are considered ready

The documentation establishes that these values are configurable; it does not establish one cross-platform rendering result. Reproducing the values is therefore the first diagnostic step.

  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

2. Set a deterministic Puppeteer viewport

Use an explicit viewport instead of relying on defaults. This example fixes CSS dimensions and raster scale, waits for the page to settle, and records the effective viewport:

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
    headless: true,
    // Add deliberate screen arguments only when your reference capture uses them.
    args: ['--window-size=1440,900']
  });

  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.setViewport({
    width: 1440,
    height: 900,
    deviceScaleFactor: 1
  });

  await page.goto('https://example.com/layout', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
  await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'layout.png', fullPage: false });

  console.log(await page.evaluate(() => ({
    innerWidth: window.innerWidth,
    innerHeight: window.innerHeight,
    devicePixelRatio: window.devicePixelRatio,
    visualViewport: window.visualViewport ? {
      width: window.visualViewport.width,
      height: window.visualViewport.height,
      scale: window.visualViewport.scale
    } : null
  })));

  await browser.close();
})();

Match the reference capture’s numbers, not the numbers that happen to look reasonable. A different height can change a breakpoint or the amount of free space distributed by justify-content. A different scale changes rasterization and can expose rounding at item edges.

3. Check headless screen and window assumptions

page.setViewport() controls the page viewport, but headless Chrome also has a virtual screen. Puppeteer documents one 800×600 headless screen when no screen configuration is supplied. If your workflow uses --window-size, --screen-info, or dynamic screen APIs, make those settings intentional and record them.

Do not blindly add flags copied from an old issue. Screen configuration can influence viewport units, media queries, and code that reads screen.width or screen.height. If the expected capture was headful, compare it with a headful run before concluding that flexbox is different.

4. Inspect the computed flex layout in DevTools

Chrome DevTools can show the layout the browser actually calculated. Open the page in Chrome, inspect the suspected container, and use the flexbox badge and overlay described in Chrome’s flexbox inspection guide.

  1. In Elements, select the parent that should be a flex container.
  2. Confirm the computed display is flex or inline-flex, not an overridden block or grid rule.
  3. Click the flex badge to enable the overlay. Check container bounds, main-axis direction, cross-axis direction, gaps, and wrapping.
  4. In Styles and Computed, inspect flex-direction, justify-content, align-items, align-content, gap, flex-wrap, and each item’s flex, width, height, margin, and min/max constraints.
  5. Compare the measured container and item rectangles with Puppeteer’s capture. A mismatch in rectangles points to inputs, page state, or CSS; equal rectangles with different-looking text points toward rasterization.
  6. Temporarily change an alignment property in the flex editor. If the overlay moves as expected, the browser is honoring the rule and the investigation should move to dimensions or capture timing.

Pay particular attention to intrinsic item sizes. A late-loading font, image, or substituted fallback font can change an item’s width and redistribute free space. Also check whether a child’s default minimum size, margins, or an unexpected scrollbar increases the container’s measured dimensions.

5. Handle full-page screenshots carefully

A full-page capture is not merely a taller version of a viewport capture. Historical Puppeteer discussion about screenshot clipping documents cases where changing viewport dimensions affects layouts that use vh, and can move fixed or sticky elements: Puppeteer screenshot clipping discussion.

When the mismatch appears only with fullPage: true:

  • Capture the same URL once with fullPage: false and once with true.
  • Inspect elements using height: 100vh, min-height: 100vh, sticky positioning, or fixed positioning.
  • Measure window.innerHeight, document height, and the target container before the screenshot.
  • Check the Puppeteer version’s current screenshot semantics rather than applying an old viewport-expansion workaround unchanged.
  • If the design requires a stable viewport, keep the viewport fixed and use a clipping or page-layout strategy that does not rewrite the dimensions your CSS depends on.

Do not treat the historical discussion as proof of a universal cause. It identifies a real class of side effects; your page still needs measurement.

6. Separate flex positioning from font rendering

If bounding boxes match but text appears one or two pixels different, compare the font files, font loading completion, operating system, Chromium build, and device scale factor. A 2018 issue mentioned --font-render-hinting=none as an experiment for inconsistent headless text rendering: Puppeteer issue 2410. It is historical community issue content, not a current general fix.

Use that flag only as a controlled comparison, recording the exact browser and operating system. Do not ship it as a guaranteed remedy. Prefer loading the same font assets, waiting for document.fonts.ready, and comparing element coordinates before changing rendering flags.

7. Make the capture reproducible

Once you identify the difference, encode it in the capture rather than relying on a developer workstation:

  • Pin or record Puppeteer and Chromium versions in CI.
  • Set viewport dimensions and deviceScaleFactor explicitly.
  • Use the same headless/headful mode and deliberate screen arguments.
  • Wait for a meaningful readiness condition: a selector, network idle, fonts, and any application-specific data load.
  • Disable animations for visual tests, or capture at a known animation time.
  • Use stable test data, locale, timezone, cookies, and authentication.
  • Compare screenshots at the same pixel scale and use overlays or difference images only after geometry is verified.

FAQ

Should I use align-items or justify-content to fix the difference?

Only after DevTools confirms that the computed property is wrong for the intended axis. A screenshot mismatch alone does not identify which property, if any, needs changing.

Does setting deviceScaleFactor: 1 guarantee identical pixels?

No. It makes raster scale explicit, but browser version, operating system, fonts, screen configuration, page state, and capture behavior can still differ.

Is an 800×600 screenshot always caused by Puppeteer’s default?

Not necessarily. Puppeteer documents an 800×600 default headless screen when no screen configuration is supplied, but your code, browser version, or launch arguments may set other values. Measure the actual run.

Can a full-page screenshot change CSS layout?

It can expose differences when viewport-dependent layout or clipping behavior is involved. Compare viewport and full-page captures and verify the current version’s semantics before changing the page or viewport.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I compare first when two screenshots disagree?

Compare viewport width and height, device scale factor, headless/headful mode, virtual screen, browser versions, fonts, and capture timing before editing CSS.

How can I tell whether flexbox or font rendering is responsible?

Use DevTools and measured bounding boxes. Different rectangles indicate layout inputs or CSS; equal rectangles with different glyph edges indicate rendering or font differences.
