A blank Playwright page usually has a specific, observable cause: navigation never happened, the server returned an error page, application JavaScript failed, the test is asserting against the wrong tab, or the CI browser did not start correctly. Capture the navigation response, current URL, DOM, console errors, failed requests, and a screenshot before changing waits. The evidence identifies the failure class faster than adding arbitrary delays.
Start by proving what navigation did
Playwright runs browsers in headless mode by default. A newly created page starts at about:blank, so that URL alone is not evidence that your application is broken. Save the value returned by page.goto() and print both the URL and HTTP status.

});A successful navigation normally returns a Response. The expected return value for navigating to about:blank is null. If goto() throws, read the exception before changing the test: common categories are an invalid URL, timeout, unreachable host, SSL failure, or a failed main resource. A server response with HTTP 404 or 500 is different: Playwright does not throw merely because the server returned a valid HTTP error status. Inspect response.status(), the response body, and your application’s routing.
Interpret the first branch

Make the headless run visible
Use the Inspector to see the live DOM and pause at the failing point. Run the test with npx playwright test --debug, add await page.pause() immediately before the suspected action, or launch the browser with headless: false for local diagnostics. Headed mode is a diagnostic aid, not a fix; if the headed and headless paths differ, compare viewport, permissions, environment variables, and browser arguments.

Choose a navigation milestone deliberately: commit when you only need the response committed, domcontentloaded when the DOM is parsed, and load when load-event resources are expected. Playwright documents networkidle as discouraged for tests; instead, assert the element or state that proves your application is ready.
Capture runtime, network, and DOM evidence
Register listeners before calling goto() so early failures are not missed. The following scaffold records browser-console messages, uncaught page exceptions, crashes, failed requests, HTTP errors, the resulting HTML, and a full-page image.

Use a real readiness assertion
After navigation, assert a user-visible state. A selector, heading, URL pattern, or application-specific status is stronger than waiting for a quiet network.

A larger timeout can help a legitimately slow environment, but it cannot repair a missing bundle, a rejected request, or a JavaScript exception.
Check that you are asserting against the right page
Links and buttons can open a popup or a new tab. If the test continues using the original page, it may appear blank even though the report loaded correctly elsewhere. Create the event promise before the action, await it, and assert on the returned Page.

Diagnose CI-only blank pages and browser startup failures
First separate “the browser did not start” from “the application rendered blank.” Run CI diagnostics with:
DEBUG=pw:browser npx playwright testEnsure the Playwright browser binaries and Linux dependencies have been installed by Playwright’s installer in the same environment that runs the tests. A container or runner may have Node modules but no browser executable or required shared libraries.
For headed Linux diagnostics, provide an X server with Xvfb:
xvfb-run npx playwright test --headedCompare CI and local values for the target URL, baseURL, proxy settings, certificates, authentication headers, viewport, timezone, geolocation, and feature flags. A private hostname resolvable on a laptop may not exist in the runner. A page that depends on a secret or API endpoint can produce a valid HTML shell and then fail during hydration.

Keep intermittent failures with a trace
Configure Playwright Test to retain a trace on the first retry:

});Open the resulting trace in Trace Viewer. It preserves browser operations, screenshots, snapshots, and network activity; Playwright Test also adds assertion context. This lets you see whether the document was blank at navigation, became blank after a click, or rendered correctly before a later failure.
A decision tree for the common failure classes
- Log URL and response status. If the URL is still
about:blank, inspect the call path, target variable,baseURL, and page/context selection. - Classify thrown navigation errors. Fix invalid URL, timeout, SSL, DNS, unreachable host, or failed main-resource causes individually.
- Inspect non-2xx responses. For 404 or 500, read the body and fix routing, deployment, authentication, or server code.
- Inspect the DOM and runtime. An HTML document with no visible UI calls for
page.content(), console output,pageerror, failed requests, and a screenshot. - Verify page identity. If a popup or tab is expected, await it before the triggering action and switch all assertions to the returned page.
- Compare CI startup conditions. Use
DEBUG=pw:browser, install browsers and dependencies, and use Xvfb for headed Linux runs. - Preserve an intermittent reproduction. Use
trace: 'on-first-retry'and inspect the trace rather than adding sleeps.

FAQ
Does headless mode itself create an empty page?
No. Headless is Playwright’s default display mode; an empty result still requires checking navigation, application runtime, page identity, or the CI environment.
Should I always use waitUntil: 'networkidle'?
No. Playwright discourages it as a test readiness condition. Assert the locator or state that proves the page is usable.
Why can a 500 response look like a Playwright success?
HTTP 500 is a valid response from the remote server, so goto() can return normally. Check the returned status and response content.
What is the fastest way to preserve an intermittent blank-page failure?
Enable trace: 'on-first-retry', then inspect the trace’s screenshots, snapshots, network activity, and assertion context.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a service worker cause a blank page even when goto succeeds?
Yes. Treat it as a client-side runtime or network issue: inspect failed requests, console output, page errors, and the captured DOM, then test with the service worker disabled or cleared as an isolation step.
How do I know whether the blank image is caused by CSS rather than navigation?
Compare the screenshot with page.content() and inspect computed styles in headed Inspector mode. A populated DOM with hidden or zero-sized content points to CSS or layout, not an empty navigation.
