The mismatch usually comes from comparing different rendering stages, not from “Python” itself. Puppeteer screenshots capture a browser view, while page.pdf() uses print CSS media by default and applies print-oriented color handling. If Python then rasterizes that PDF, its DPI, colorspace, transparency, clipping, and annotation settings can change the result again. Check each stage in order: identify the artifacts, align browser media and page geometry, then inspect PDF rasterization and any resizing.
First identify which two outputs you are comparing
“Puppeteer PDF versus image in Python” can describe several different pipelines. Write down how each file was made before changing settings:
- Browser screenshot: Puppeteer captures the rendered page or a selected region as an image.
- HTML-to-PDF: Puppeteer runs
page.pdf(), which renders the page for printing by default. - PDF-to-image: Python opens an existing PDF and converts a page to pixels.
- HTML-to-image in Python: Python drives a browser or another renderer to capture the page directly.
These are not interchangeable operations. A screenshot and a print-layout PDF can differ before Python is involved. A PDF rasterized afterward adds another set of rendering choices. For a specific diagnosis, retain the exact code for both outputs, the browser and library versions, installed fonts, and the two artifacts; the cause cannot be determined from the title of the problem alone.
Align Puppeteer’s PDF with the screenshot
Choose the intended media type
Puppeteer documents that Page.pdf() generates a PDF with the print CSS media type. A page can therefore apply different rules from the ones used for its on-screen screenshot: print styles may hide navigation, change layout, or alter typography. If the PDF should resemble the screen rendering, set screen media before generating it:

await page.emulateMediaType('screen');
await page.pdf({ path: 'page.pdf' });
If the document is meant to be printed, keep print media and inspect the site’s print styles instead. Switching to screen media is not a universal fix; it changes which CSS rules apply. See Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() documentation.
Match paper size, page dimensions, margins, and scale
A browser screenshot has a viewport or capture region; a PDF has pages. Even when the same CSS is used, those geometries can produce different line wraps and positioning. Puppeteer’s documented PDF defaults include Letter paper, preferCSSPageSize: false, and scale: 1. Check the PDF options that govern paper format, explicit width and height, margins, scale, and whether CSS @page sizing takes precedence. Do not assume the PDF inherits the screenshot’s viewport dimensions.
For repeatable output, choose a paper size or explicit page dimensions and margins deliberately, and decide whether the stylesheet’s @page rule or the API options should control page sizing. A change in page width can reflow text even if the font and viewport screenshot are otherwise correct. The available controls and defaults are documented in Puppeteer’s PDFOptions interface.

Separate color adjustment from background graphics
Two PDF settings are often confused. Puppeteer modifies PDF colors for printing by default; the documentation points to CSS -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact colors are needed. Separately, PDF backgrounds are omitted unless printBackground is enabled. The first concerns print color adjustment; the second determines whether background graphics are included. Enabling one does not substitute for the other.
await page.emulateMediaType('screen');
await page.pdf({
path: 'page.pdf',
printBackground: true
});
That example includes backgrounds and uses screen media, but does not by itself guarantee pixel-identical colors or dimensions. Review the CSS print-color behavior and the remaining PDF geometry settings for the result you want. See the PDF method reference and the PDF options reference.
Wait for the intended fonts
Puppeteer’s PDF generation waits for fonts by default; its guide describes this as waiting for document.fonts.ready. That does not establish that the intended font loaded successfully or that the screenshot and PDF were produced in equivalent environments. A fallback font changes glyph widths and can shift line breaks, page breaks, and element heights. Confirm that web fonts have loaded, and compare using the same browser build and installed font environment. See Puppeteer’s PDF generation guide.

Check screenshot options before comparing pixels
Puppeteer screenshots have their own capture parameters. Confirm that both images show the same content and dimensions before looking for a renderer defect:
- Region: A full-page screenshot, a viewport screenshot, and a clipped capture cover different areas. Align the captured bounds with the PDF page or rasterized page.
- Image format and quality: PNG, JPEG, and other supported output choices do not encode pixels identically. Lossy quality settings can introduce visible artifacts; compare like formats where possible.
- Transparency: A transparent screenshot may look different when displayed against a viewer’s background than an opaque PDF raster.
- Capture timing: Ensure the page content and fonts have settled before capturing either artifact.
For Puppeteer’s version 25.12.0 documentation shown on the API page accessed September 29, 2026, see ScreenshotOptions. Match its region and output handling to the comparison, rather than assuming every image is a direct representation of the whole page.
If Python rasterizes a PDF, inspect the rasterizer settings
First determine whether Python opens an existing PDF or renders HTML in a browser. For the former, Puppeteer has already produced the PDF; Python’s job is to turn PDF page content into pixels. PyMuPDF’s Page.get_pixmap() exposes controls that affect those pixels:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Resolution: Specify DPI or a transformation matrix. A different raster resolution changes pixel dimensions and may affect apparent edge sharpness.
- Colorspace: PyMuPDF documents RGB as its default. If another colorspace is requested, the resulting pixel values and display can differ.
- Alpha: Its default is
alpha=False. With alpha enabled, empty areas are transparent; with alpha disabled, they are cleared to white. A viewer’s background can make transparent areas appear unlike a white page. - Clip and page bounds: A clip rectangle, page rotation, and CropBox handling determine which portion is rendered and how it is oriented.
- Annotations: Check whether annotations are included when comparing with an output that does not show them.
Use the same DPI or matrix, colorspace, alpha behavior, clipping, and annotation policy for each comparable raster. Consult PyMuPDF’s Page documentation for the options and their current API behavior.
Account for resizing and image encoding
If the Python workflow resizes the raster after PDF conversion, the resampling filter changes the resulting pixels. Pillow distinguishes nearest, bilinear, bicubic, and Lanczos resampling; they are not equivalent. Lanczos is described as a high-quality filter with a performance cost relative to faster choices. Keep the output dimensions and filter fixed when comparing images, and avoid resizing one artifact but not the other.
Also compare the saved files, not just a viewer preview. An image format or quality setting can affect the encoded result, and display scaling by an image viewer can make edges appear different. Pillow’s stable concepts documentation, which showed version 12.3.0 when accessed September 29, 2026, describes its resampling concepts at Pillow Concepts.

A controlled diagnostic sequence
- Label both artifacts and their creation stages. Record screenshot, HTML-to-PDF, PDF-to-raster, or browser-driven image; note the versions and fonts used.
- Compare browser rendering to browser rendering first. Align viewport size, capture region, content readiness, and screenshot format. Avoid involving PDF rasterization until this comparison is understood.
- Set the PDF media intentionally. Use
page.emulateMediaType('screen')beforepage.pdf()for screen-style CSS, or retain print media when print layout is the target. - Make PDF geometry explicit. Check format or dimensions, margins,
@pageprecedence, and scale; do not rely on defaults if the target geometry matters. - Set PDF visuals separately. Verify print color adjustment and
printBackgroundindependently, then confirm fonts loaded. - Standardize PDF rasterization. Hold DPI or matrix, colorspace, alpha, clip, rotation/CropBox behavior, and annotations constant.
- Standardize post-processing. Use the same output dimensions, resampling filter, and encoding choices, then compare at the same display scale.
This sequence isolates the stage where the mismatch first appears. Changing media type, DPI, and resampling all at once may make the output look closer, but it obscures which choice was responsible.
Common symptoms and fixes
| What differs | Likely stage to inspect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Different layout, hidden elements, or line wrapping | HTML-to-PDF | Print versus screen CSS, paper width, margins, scale, and @page sizing. |
| Colors look faded or backgrounds are absent | HTML-to-PDF | Print color adjustment and printBackground as separate settings. |
| Text wraps differently or pages break unexpectedly | Font loading or PDF geometry | Confirm web fonts loaded and compare browser/font environments and page width. |
| Page looks blurry, jagged, or has different pixel dimensions | PDF-to-raster or resizing | Match DPI or matrix, output dimensions, and Pillow resampling filter. |
| White or colored areas appear around the page | PDF-to-raster or image display | Check alpha, clip, CropBox, page rotation, and the background used to display transparency. |
| Marks appear in only one artifact | Capture or rasterization | Align screenshot clipping and check whether PDF annotations are included. |

If you need a clean website capture rather than a custom Puppeteer-to-PDF-to-Python pipeline, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for developers. For example, this cURL request returns a WebP capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Its clean-shot steps can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. This is a screenshot service, not a drop-in replacement for a custom Python PDF-rasterization pipeline with its own rendering requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing Python libraries fix every Puppeteer PDF mismatch?
No. If the difference is already present between the Puppeteer screenshot and PDF, first inspect Puppeteer’s media type, page geometry, print colors, backgrounds, and fonts.
Should I use screen media or print media for a PDF?
Use screen media when the PDF should follow screen CSS; use print media when print-specific styling and pagination are intended.
Why can a transparent raster look different in two image viewers?
Transparent pixels are composited against the viewer’s display background. Compare with alpha disabled or place both images on the same explicit background.
