For a quick one-off image, use Adobe Acrobat’s Snapshot tool: set the PDF to Fit Page, take a snapshot, then paste it into an image editor and save it. For a sharper, repeatable PNG or JPEG—especially when converting multiple pages—render the PDF directly with a tool such as Poppler, which lets you choose the output resolution. A screenshot captures display pixels; a renderer converts the PDF page itself.
Choose between a screenshot and a direct PDF render
The right method depends on whether you need a quick visual copy or a controlled image file. A viewer snapshot is convenient, but it captures only what is visible or selected. Direct rendering is better when you need predictable dimensions, a chosen resolution, or a repeatable workflow.

If the result must include every edge of the page, a screen-based method needs the entire page visible before capture. If the result must have controlled resolution, render the PDF instead.
Capture a whole page with Adobe Acrobat Snapshot
Acrobat’s Snapshot tool copies selected PDF text and images as an image. Clicking on the page captures all content currently displayed; dragging selects a crop. The copied image goes to the clipboard, ready to paste into an image editor or document. Adobe’s Snapshot instructions

- Open the PDF in the desktop Acrobat application. Navigate to the page you want to capture.
- Fit the entire page in the window. Choose Fit Page so the page edges and contents are visible. If the page is partly off-screen or zoomed in, the capture may omit content.
- Open Snapshot. On Windows, choose Menu > Undo, Redo and More > Take a snapshot. On macOS, use the corresponding command in the Edit menu.
- Capture the page. Click once on the page to copy all page content currently displayed. To capture only part of the page, drag a rectangle around that area instead.
- Paste and save. Paste with Ctrl+V on Windows or Command+V on macOS into an image editor or document, then save or export the pasted image as PNG, JPEG, or another format supported by that app.
Acrobat Reader documents the same Snapshot concept: choose Edit > More > Take A Snapshot, drag around the area, and paste the copied image elsewhere. Its instructions note that a PDF’s security settings may block copying. Adobe Acrobat Reader Snapshot instructions
If the page is cut off
Return to the PDF, choose Fit Page, and take the snapshot again. A snapshot reflects the displayed page content, not the complete underlying page regardless of zoom or scroll position. Check the pasted image’s edges before saving.
If Snapshot cannot copy
Some PDFs have security restrictions that disallow copying. If Acrobat reports that copying is not allowed, a clipboard-based capture may not work. Check the document’s permissions and use a permitted method; do not assume a different zoom level will remove a security restriction.
Take a quick PDF screenshot in macOS Preview
Preview can display a PDF while macOS captures the screen or a selected area. This is useful for a quick visual, but it is a screenshot of the display—not a resolution-controlled conversion of the PDF page. The capture may include app controls, and a page larger than the visible window will not be captured in full by a screen or window screenshot.

- Open the PDF in Preview and navigate to the page.
- Use Preview’s screenshot command. Choose File > Take Screenshot, then select the whole screen, a window, or a selected area as appropriate.
- Inspect and save the result. Confirm that the complete page is inside the captured area. Crop away unwanted interface elements in an image editor if needed.
Apple describes the available screenshot choices in its Preview guide. If the whole page does not fit at a useful size, use direct rendering rather than relying on a screen capture.
Render a PDF page to an image with Poppler
For output independent of monitor size, use a PDF renderer. Poppler’s Qt API provides Poppler::Page::renderToImage, which renders a page to a QImage using specified horizontal and vertical resolution values. The general workflow is to open the PDF, select a page index, render it at the desired resolution, and encode the resulting image as PNG or JPEG. See the Poppler Qt API documentation.
The exact command-line program, command options, package installation method, and language bindings vary by operating system and Poppler version. The documented API is a library interface, so its method name alone is not a ready-to-run shell command. Check the documentation for the specific Poppler binding or executable installed on your system rather than pasting an unverified command.
- Choose the PDF and page. Confirm which page you need and how the renderer indexes pages; a library may use a zero-based page index while a user-facing tool may ask for a one-based page number.
- Select resolution values. Set the horizontal and vertical resolution supported by the chosen rendering interface. Higher output resolution creates a larger raster image; choose a value that suits the intended viewing or publishing size.
- Render the page. Open the PDF, obtain the target page, and call the renderer with the chosen resolution values.
- Encode the image. Save the returned image as PNG for a lossless image file or JPEG when that format is required. Confirm the output path and format using the APIs of the language and image library in use.
- Validate the output. Open the image, inspect page edges and fine text, and check its pixel dimensions before using it downstream.
Resolution and format considerations
Unlike a viewer screenshot, direct rendering lets the workflow specify the rendering resolution. The resulting pixel dimensions depend on the PDF page size and the selected resolution. There is no universally correct DPI value established here: choose according to the output’s intended size and legibility, then inspect the rendered text and file size. PNG and JPEG are possible output encodings; use the format required by the destination application.

One page or many pages
For a one-time capture, manually selecting a page in a viewer may be simplest. For repeated conversion, automate opening the PDF, selecting each required page, rendering at consistent resolution values, and writing predictable filenames. Rendering is suited to batch jobs because the output does not depend on fitting each page to a particular monitor. Confirm the page-index convention and image-encoding behavior in the chosen binding before processing a full document.
Why a PDF render can be better than a screenshot
- Fidelity: Direct rendering converts the page layout at a selected resolution. A screenshot is bounded by screen pixels.
- Completeness: Acrobat Snapshot and Preview capture visible or selected material. Fit the full page before using Snapshot; for a page that does not fit on screen, render it.
- Repeatability: A renderer can apply consistent settings across pages and jobs. Viewer captures are manual.
- Output control: Rendering interfaces expose resolution and image-format choices; clipboard snapshots depend on the viewer and operating system.
- Access restrictions: Acrobat Reader notes that PDF security settings can prevent copying. A screen capture or renderer should not be treated as permission to bypass document restrictions.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The image contains only part of the page
Likely cause: The page was zoomed in, scrolled, or otherwise not fully visible when captured. Fix: In Acrobat, choose Fit Page before taking a Snapshot. In Preview, ensure the selected screen area or window contains the entire page. For consistently complete output, render the PDF directly.
The pasted image is blurry or too small
Likely cause: A screen-based capture was constrained by the display’s pixel dimensions. Fix: Render the page at an explicitly chosen resolution with a PDF renderer such as Poppler. Inspect the output dimensions and small text rather than assuming a screen capture can provide higher detail.
Acrobat will not copy the selection
Likely cause: The PDF author applied security restrictions that block copying. Fix: Check the document permissions and use a method permitted for that file. Adobe Reader’s Snapshot documentation identifies security restrictions as a possible reason copying is unavailable.

The screenshot includes menus or window borders
Likely cause: The selected capture mode included the whole screen or an application window. Fix: Use a selected-area capture in Preview, or crop the result. For a clean image without screen interface elements, direct PDF rendering is preferable.
A Poppler code example does not match the installed system
Likely cause: Poppler command names and bindings vary by platform and language, while renderToImage is a documented Qt API method rather than a universal shell command. Fix: Identify the installed Poppler version and the particular API or executable you are using, then follow that interface’s documentation for opening a document, selecting a page, supplying resolution values, and saving the image.
