The implementation below uses one selected-image state, real buttons, a responsive layout and a modal dialog that closes with Escape and returns focus to the opener.
Choose the right viewer pattern
Start by deciding whether you need a static gallery, a manually controlled carousel or a lightbox.
| Pattern | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Static grid or strip | Catalogs, portfolios and reference pages where several images should remain visible | Lowest interaction and loading complexity; users open a full image on its own URL unless you add a viewer |
| Manual carousel | A small set of related images where one image should dominate the layout | Requires clear previous/next controls, keyboard support and position announcements; carousels can be hard to discover |
| Lightbox gallery | Large images that should open over the current page without losing context | Needs modal focus handling, Escape support, a close control and a no-JavaScript fallback |
Manual navigation is the safest default. Do not auto-rotate unless it serves a real purpose. W3C WAI states: “Users must be able to pause carousel movement because it can be too fast or distracting, making text hard to read.” If you do rotate, provide pause and stop controls, stop when a user interacts, and honor reduced-motion preferences.
Define image data and semantic HTML
Each item below has a thumbnail, a larger source, a concise description and a caption. The anchor is the fallback: if JavaScript fails, activating it still opens the full-size image.

Use alt="" only for decorative images. An informative image needs a concise description of its essential information. A thumbnail that acts as a control should describe the destination or action; the visible photo description normally does that. W3C WAI summarizes the requirement as: “Images must have text alternatives that describe the information or function represented by them.”
Make the layout responsive and visible
:root { color-scheme: light dark; }
.image-viewer { max-width: 70rem; margin: 0 auto; }
.viewer-stage {
margin: 0;
min-height: 20rem;

.viewer-controls { display: flex; gap: .5rem; align-items: center; margin-top: .75rem; }
dialog { border: 0; padding: 0; max-width: 96vw; max-height: 96vh; background: #111; color: #fff; }
dialog::backdrop { background: rgb(0 0 0 / .8); }

#close-lightbox { position: absolute; top: .25rem; right: .25rem; z-index: 1; }
.sr-only { position: absolute; width: 1px; height: 1px; padding: 0; margin: -1px; overflow: hidden; clip: rect(0,0,0,0); white-space: nowrap; border: 0; }
@media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce) { *, *::before, *::after { scroll-behavior: auto !important; transition-duration: .01ms !important; } }
Explicit width and height reserve space before an image arrives, reducing layout shifts. Keep the display image within the viewport, but do not upscale small files unnecessarily. On narrow screens, ensure controls remain reachable and thumbnails have a touch target of about 44 CSS pixels.

thumbnails.forEach((thumb, i) => {
const active = i === selected;

if (active) thumb.setAttribute('aria-current', 'true');
else thumb.removeAttribute('aria-current');
});
if (lightbox.open) {
lightboxImage.src = item.full;
lightboxImage.alt = item.alt;
lightboxCaption.textContent = item.caption;
}
}
function openLightbox() {

const item = items[selected];
lightboxImage.src = item.full;
lightboxImage.alt = item.alt;
lightboxCaption.textContent = item.caption;
if (typeof lightbox.showModal === 'function') lightbox.showModal();
else lightbox.setAttribute('open', '');
document.querySelector('#close-lightbox').focus();
}
function closeLightbox() {
if (typeof lightbox.close === 'function') lightbox.close();

if (opener) opener.focus();
}
document.querySelector('#previous').addEventListener('click', () => render(selected - 1));

document.querySelector('#open-lightbox').addEventListener('click', openLightbox);
document.querySelector('#close-lightbox').addEventListener('click', closeLightbox);
thumbnails.forEach((thumb, i) => thumb.addEventListener('click', event => {
event.preventDefault();
render(i);
openLightbox();
}));
lightbox.addEventListener('cancel', event => { event.preventDefault(); closeLightbox(); });
lightbox.addEventListener('click', event => {
if (event.target === lightbox) closeLightbox();
});
document.addEventListener('keydown', event => {
if (!lightbox.open) return;
if (event.key === 'ArrowLeft') render(selected - 1);
if (event.key === 'ArrowRight') render(selected + 1);
});
The render function updates the image, alternative text, caption, selected state and live status together. Wrapping at the first and last item is intentional here; expose that behavior with labels or documentation if it could surprise users. Every function is attached to a real button or link, so keyboard activation works without custom key handlers.

Make the modal usable with assistive technology
- Move focus to the close button when the dialog opens.
- Close from the close button, Escape and (optionally) a backdrop click.
- Return focus to the thumbnail or “Open larger view” button that opened it.
- Use a modal dialog implementation that prevents background focus. Native
<dialog>withshowModal()supplies that behavior in supporting browsers; test your fallback if you use one. - Keep an
aria-live="polite"andaria-atomic="true"status so changes such as “Image 2 of 4” are announced without interrupting the user.
Do not rely on a generic div with a click handler for controls. Semantic buttons and links provide expected keyboard and screen-reader behavior.
Performance, loading and failure handling
- Generate thumbnails separately from full-size files; do not shrink multi-megapixel originals only with CSS.
- Use modern formats such as WebP or JPEG where appropriate, and provide dimensions in markup.
- Load the first image immediately. For long galleries, defer non-visible thumbnails and preload only the next likely full image.
- Show a loading state while replacing a large source, and keep the previous image until the new one fires
loadso the stage does not flash blank. - Attach an
errorlistener to display a useful message when a URL fails, and keep the original link available for a retry. - Test slow networks, zoom at 200%, high-contrast modes, touch input, narrow screens, reduced motion and broken URLs. These are implementation checks, not a promise of a particular benchmark.
mainImage.addEventListener('error', () => {
status.textContent = 'This image could not be loaded. Open the thumbnail link to try again.';
});
Common problems and fixes
Clicking a thumbnail navigates away
The default anchor action is still running. Confirm the listener calls event.preventDefault() and that the script loads after the gallery markup or uses defer.
Caption and alternative text do not change
Update all selected-item fields in one render function. Do not change only src; set alt, caption, position status and selected state from the same data object.

Escape does not close the viewer
Use a native dialog’s cancel event or add a document-level Escape listener that calls the same close function. Check that another script has not stopped propagation.
Focus disappears after closing
Store document.activeElement before opening and call focus() after closing. Guard against the opener being removed from the document.

Controls are difficult to use on a phone
Increase touch targets, keep previous/next buttons beside the image, allow horizontal thumbnail scrolling or a responsive grid, and verify that the dialog fits at the user’s zoom level.
Automatic rotation distracts users
Remove it or add visible pause and stop controls, stop on focus or pointer interaction, and honor prefers-reduced-motion. Manual navigation is usually clearer.

If your goal is to generate image files rather than ship an interactive component, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one GET request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. When to add deep links or a library
A custom component is enough when the gallery has a modest number of images and one interaction model. Add URL fragments or query parameters if users must share a particular image or use browser history. Consider a maintained library only after checking its current keyboard, focus, screen-reader, reduced-motion and fallback behavior; do not assume a package is accessible because its marketing says so. For a guided project covering HTML, CSS, event listeners and a lightbox, Mark Simon’s JavaScript for Web Developers: Understanding the Basics (Apress, 2023) includes a chapter project titled “Building a Lightbox Gallery.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Should thumbnails be buttons or links?
Use links when each thumbnail must still open a full-size URL without JavaScript. Use buttons when selection is purely in-page, but then provide another accessible path to the full image.
Is a carousel required for an image viewer?
No. A static grid is often easier to scan and more accessible. Choose a carousel only when showing one dominant image improves the task.
How many images should be preloaded?
Preload the first image and, if navigation is predictable, the next likely full image. Loading an entire large gallery up front increases transfer and memory costs.
