The quickest way is built into macOS: open the page, press Command-P, choose Save as PDF in the print interface, select a filename and folder, and save. You do not need a printer or a separate PDF application.
Save a web page as a PDF from any Mac browser
macOS can create a PDF from any application that supports printing. A browser’s print preview converts the page’s printable version, rather than making a pixel-for-pixel copy of what is on screen.
- Open the web page and wait until the content you need has loaded.
- Press Command-P, or choose File > Print.
- In the print preview or macOS print dialog, open the destination or PDF menu and choose Save as PDF.
- Enter a filename, choose a destination folder, and select Save.
The resulting file is a normal PDF that you can attach, upload, archive, or open in Preview. If the preview does not contain something visible in the browser, check the page-specific instructions and print settings below before saving.
Safari: use Print, not Save As
Safari has two different saving features that are easy to confuse. To create a PDF, use File > Print (or Command-P) and then choose Save as PDF from the PDF menu in the print dialog.

File > Save As is not Safari’s PDF command. Apple lists Web Archive and Page Source there. A Web Archive can retain a page’s graphics and links for later viewing, while Page Source saves the HTML source; neither is the same as a portable PDF. Some sites can also prevent items displayed on a page from being saved.
Safari print checks
- Look through the preview for missing images, menus, comments, or tables before committing the file.
- Use the page range if you need only selected pages.
- Turn headers and footers on or off according to whether you want the URL, title, date, or page numbers.
- If a page offers a reader or print view, open it first; a simpler layout often produces a more legible PDF.
Chrome: choose Save as PDF as the destination
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Press Command-P or select File > Print.
- In the print window, select Save as PDF as the destination.
- Set the pages, layout, paper size, margins, scale, and other available options.
- Choose Save, name the file, and select its folder.
Chrome’s preview can expose a page differently from the browser tab. Always scan several pages, especially when the source contains wide tables, charts, or lazy-loaded images.
Firefox: select Save to PDF
- Open the page in Firefox and open its print preview.
- Open the Destination menu and select Save to PDF.
- Adjust the settings that appear for the page.
- Save the file and choose its name and location.
Firefox provides controls for orientation, page selection, color mode, paper size, scale, pages per sheet, margins, headers and footers, and background printing. It may also offer Original and Simplified formats. Simplified output can remove navigation and other clutter, but it can also change the page’s structure, so compare the preview with the original before saving.
Choose settings that make the PDF readable
Print previews expose similar controls, although labels and their locations vary by browser and macOS version. These settings affect the printable output, not necessarily the page as rendered on screen.

Preview before you save
- Check the first page, a middle page, and the final page.
- Confirm that links, headings, images, and table columns are present.
- Look for an orphaned heading, a blank page, clipped text, or a large empty area caused by a page-break rule.
- For long pages, verify that images which load while scrolling have appeared before opening the print dialog.
Websites can supply print-specific styles, hide navigation, rearrange columns, or omit content entirely. No browser can guarantee that its PDF will be identical to the screen view; the preview for that particular page is the reliable check.
When the page does not print correctly
Content is missing
Scroll through the page first so deferred images and text have a chance to load, then reopen the print preview. If the site has a reader, print, or “show more” view, activate it before printing. Expand accordions and load additional comments or results that must appear in the PDF.
The layout is too wide
Try landscape orientation, a larger paper size, reduced scale, or narrower margins. For a table that remains unreadable, print only the relevant pages or copy the table into a document designed for a wide page.
Colors or images disappear
Enable background graphics or background printing when those elements carry information. Some sites deliberately remove decorative backgrounds in print CSS; in that case, the browser cannot restore them through the standard dialog.

The output contains blank pages
Inspect page breaks and margins in the preview. A large fixed-height panel, an advertisement slot, or a print stylesheet can push a small amount of content onto an otherwise empty page. Switching to a simplified or reader format, changing scale, or selecting a narrower page range can help.
Fonts or characters look wrong
Wait for web fonts to finish loading and print again. If the problem persists, try another browser’s preview or the site’s print view. A PDF generated from the printable HTML still depends on the browser’s rendering of that page.
The Print command is unavailable or fails
Reload the page, close an obstructive dialog, and try Command-P again. If macOS opens a system print sheet instead of the browser preview, use its PDF menu and select Save as PDF. Saving to a local folder such as Documents can distinguish a permission problem from a page-rendering problem.
PDF versus Safari Web Archive
Choose a PDF when the goal is a fixed, shareable document that looks the same when opened on another Mac or attached to an email. Choose Safari’s Web Archive when you specifically want Safari to retain a webpage’s graphics and links for later access and accept that it is a Safari web-document format rather than a PDF. Choose Page Source only when you need the underlying HTML.

These formats solve different problems: a PDF captures printable presentation, a Web Archive preserves a Safari-oriented page package, and Page Source preserves markup. Saving one does not automatically create the others.

Practical reliability and privacy checks
- Save the PDF to a known local folder before moving it into cloud storage or a document system.
- Open the saved file in Preview and search for a distinctive heading to confirm that text was captured as expected.
- For confidential pages, check whether the URL includes private information and whether browser extensions or site content add data you did not intend to share.
- For repeatable records, keep the source URL, capture date, page range, orientation, and scale with the PDF’s filename or metadata in your filing system.

Does saving a webpage as a PDF require a printer?
No. macOS creates the file through the print interface’s Save as PDF destination, even when no physical printer is installed.

Save each page first, then combine the files in a PDF editor or Preview workflow that supports thumbnails and page insertion.
