spawn uvx ENOENT means the MCP client cannot find the uvx executable when it tries to start a server. If uvx works in your terminal but not in a desktop app, the most likely cause is that the app has a different PATH. Find the executable with which uvx on macOS or where uvx on Windows, put its full path in the MCP server configuration, then fully quit and restart the client.
What `spawn uvx ENOENT` means
ENOENT is an operating-system error indicating that the process asking to start a command could not find it. In this case, the MCP client tried to launch uvx, but could not resolve that command from the environment available to the client. Files.com describes the message as meaning that uvx cannot be found on the system PATH.
This is usually a command-discovery problem, not an MCP protocol problem or a defect in the server package. In one report against modelcontextprotocol/servers, uvx v0.6.5 ran in the terminal and which uvx returned /Users/oliverangelil/.local/bin/uvx, but Claude Desktop still failed when its server configuration specified only "command": "uvx". That distinction is useful: the command can exist and work for your shell while remaining unavailable to the desktop client.
Find out whether `uvx` is installed and where it lives
macOS
- Open Terminal.
- Run
which uvx. - If it returns a path, test that exact executable with
/the/path/from/which/uvx --version, replacing the example path with your result.
For example, if the command prints /Users/you/.local/bin/uvx, run /Users/you/.local/bin/uvx --version. A version response confirms that this path points to a runnable executable in your terminal. If which prints nothing, the shell cannot find uvx either.

Windows
- Open Command Prompt or PowerShell.
- Run
where uvx. - Test the resulting executable path with its
--versionoption.
The result may be a path ending in uvx.exe. Use the path that actually appears on your computer; the example C:pathtolocalbinuvx.exe is a format example, not a default install location.
Linux
The same PATH diagnosis applies, although the cited platform-specific instructions cover macOS and Windows rather than a Linux-specific installation procedure. In a shell, use command -v uvx to ask where the command resolves. If it prints a path, test that executable with --version and use its full path in the MCP configuration if the client cannot find the bare command.
Fix the MCP configuration with an absolute path
When the lookup returns a working path, change the MCP server’s command value from the bare name uvx to that complete path. Keep the server’s existing arguments unless you are separately changing which server package it launches.

If `uvx` is missing, install `uv` first
If which uvx or where uvx returns no executable, install uv using an installation method appropriate for your operating system. A community discussion reports resolving a missing command by installing uv with Homebrew, but that does not make Homebrew the required method for every system.
- Install
uvfor your platform. - Open a new terminal and run
which uvxon macOS orwhere uvxon Windows. - Run the returned executable with
--version. - Put its full path in the MCP configuration, save, and fully restart the desktop client.
Installing the tool and making it discoverable are separate checks. If the command works in the terminal after installation but the desktop client still reports ENOENT, continue with the absolute-path fix rather than reinstalling repeatedly.
Why it works in a terminal but not in a desktop app
An interactive shell often loads startup files that add tool directories to PATH. A desktop app launched from the operating system may not load the same shell profile. The MCP Router issue notes that Electron applications may omit profile-added directories such as /opt/homebrew/bin; it also describes bare uvx, uv, or npx commands failing for this reason. A Claude Desktop report similarly showed a usable terminal path alongside a failure from a configuration using only the bare command.

So a terminal test answers, “Can my shell find this executable?” It does not necessarily answer, “Can this already-running desktop client find it?” An absolute command path sidesteps that discovery difference. Correcting the desktop process’s PATH can also work, but the exact mechanism depends on the client and how it is launched.
Choose between an absolute path and correcting PATH

For a single computer, using the path reported by the lookup is often the most direct diagnostic fix. For a configuration shared among machines, an absolute path may differ on each machine; document the local path or use a client-specific PATH setup if the client supports one. The available evidence does not establish one universal PATH-editing screen or configuration location across all MCP clients, so follow the instructions for the specific app rather than assuming Claude Desktop and other clients use the same UI.

After the change and restart, distinguish ENOENT from later-stage failures. If the client can launch uvx but the MCP server does not connect, the initial executable lookup may be fixed; inspect the current error before changing unrelated settings. This guide’s documented fixes address finding and launching uvx, not every possible server startup, package, or protocol problem.

- The lookup command returns no path: the shell cannot find
uvx. Installuv, then repeat the lookup. - The lookup returns a path but its version check fails: verify that you copied the path exactly and that it points to an executable you can run.
- The version check works but MCP still reports
spawn uvx ENOENT: replace the bare command with the absolute path and fully restart the client. - The client reports a different error after the path change: treat it as a new failure stage; the command may now be starting, so do not assume PATH is still the cause.
- The fix works until a move or upgrade: run the lookup again and update the configured path if the executable has moved.
The same issue can affect `npx`
Node-based MCP servers can hit the analogous spawn npx ENOENT error when the client cannot find npx. Files.com notes that npx is included with Node.js and recommends using its absolute path when needed. The diagnostic pattern is the same: locate the executable, verify it, configure the full path if the desktop client does not inherit the shell PATH, and restart. The MCP Router issue also lists uv among commands that can be affected by the same environment mismatch.
