If someone only needs to view the image, a cloud-storage share link may be enough. If a website or app needs the image file itself, make sure the URL delivers the image rather than a preview page.
First, choose what kind of link you need
“Shareable image URL” can mean two different things. A view link opens a page where a person can see or download the image. A direct image URL points to the image asset itself, which is what you generally need to embed it in a webpage or give to software that expects image data.
- Choose a view link when you are sending an image to a person and a preview page is acceptable.
- Choose a direct image URL when you need an HTML
<img>source, an asset URL for an integration, or a link that should open the image file directly. - Choose controlled media delivery if an app or website needs access rules, signed links, or managed delivery rather than an informal one-off share.
A setting such as “Anyone with the link” controls who can access a file; it does not prove that the resulting address is a direct image URL.
Get a direct image URL with an image host
Imgur’s help guide describes how to locate the URL for an uploaded image. After uploading, retrieve the image address rather than copying a general page address.

- Upload the image to Imgur.
- On desktop: open the image and right-click it, then choose the browser option for copying the image address. The exact wording varies by browser.
- In a mobile browser: use the three-dot menu within the image or video content and choose “Copy link.” In the mobile app, long-press the image and choose “Copy link.” App and browser labels may vary.
- Paste the copied URL into the destination where you intend to use it.
Imgur documents these image-address and link-copy steps in its guide to locating an image URL. If retaining account control matters, use an account you control and keep track of the uploaded content.
Check that it is actually the image
Open the copied address in a private or signed-out browser window, or use a different account. Confirm that it shows the intended image without an unwanted login. If you need an embeddable asset URL, test it in that context too: the browser should load the image itself, not just a host’s page around it. These checks are practical ways to verify the access and link behavior you need; link behavior can vary by service and configuration.
Share a viewable image from Google Drive
Drive is a practical choice when you want to share a file with selected people or anyone who has its link. Google’s sharing instructions let you set general access and choose Viewer permissions.
- In Google Drive, select the image file and open Share.
- Under General access, choose Anyone with the link if the link should work for people beyond specifically invited accounts. Choose Restricted if access should remain limited to the people you select.
- Set the role to Viewer.
- Select Copy link, then save or send that link.
- Test it in a private browser window or with another account to confirm it opens as intended.
Google says recipients with an “Anyone with the link” link can open a file without signing in. That describes access to the shared file, not a guarantee that the copied address is a direct image asset URL. If a page or application requires the image bytes, test the link in that exact use. Google also notes that the owner’s name and email may be visible to recipients of a shared link, so consider that before sharing.

Share a view-only image from Dropbox
Dropbox supports shared links for people outside Dropbox, including view-only sharing for recipients who do not want to log in. This is useful when a person needs to open or preview a file, but it does not by itself establish that the link will behave as a direct image URL in another website or application.
- Create a shared link for the image in Dropbox.
- Set the link so recipients can view the file rather than edit it.
- Send the link and check it from a signed-out browser or another account.
- If you need an embedded image asset, test the link in the intended destination rather than assuming the preview link will work there.

Use a media service for websites and applications
For a production workflow, use a service whose documentation covers media delivery and access controls. The right option depends on whether you need a public asset, a restricted asset, or an application-managed URL.

Cloudinary for managed media delivery
Cloudinary documents delivery URLs and access controls, including signed URLs and time-limited signed download URLs for restricted delivery. The result depends on how the asset and its delivery settings are configured. Its documentation warns that derived versions of private assets can be publicly accessible by default unless the delivery type and strict transformation controls are configured. Review those settings before distributing a restricted image.

Google Cloud Storage for object hosting
Google Cloud Storage documents object URL patterns and access to public objects. The URL pattern alone does not make an object public: permissions must allow the intended readers to access it. This is a more technical route suited to applications or websites that need object storage and deliberately configured access.

These options differ in recipient sign-in friction, direct-image versus preview behavior, access scope, ease of retrieving a link, and technical setup. The documentation cited here does not establish comparable prices, quotas, or persistence guarantees, so those are not a basis for ranking them.
Make the access level match the image
Before sharing, decide whether the image should be public to anyone with the link, limited to named people, or accessible only for a controlled period. A link can be forwarded, so “anyone with the link” should be treated as link-based access, not as a private invitation to one recipient.
- For a one-to-one share: use restricted access when the provider supports named recipients, and check whether recipients must sign in.
- For a public webpage: make sure the host and permissions permit the intended audience to load the image. Test from a signed-out context.
- For time-limited or restricted delivery: use a media setup that explicitly supports signed or expiring URLs, and configure derived assets as well as originals.
- For personal images: inspect what identifying information may be visible to recipients, including file ownership details.
Troubleshoot a link that does not work
The recipient is asked to sign in
The file may be restricted, the recipient may not have been invited, or the share setting may not permit access without an account. Review the service’s access setting and test with a signed-out browser. Do not make a sensitive image public merely to bypass a login issue.
The URL opens a page instead of displaying the image
You likely copied a file-sharing or preview-page URL rather than a direct image address. That may be entirely suitable for sending to a person. For an embed or software integration, retrieve a documented image URL from a host or use an asset-delivery service, then test it in the target context.

The link works for you but not for someone else
Your account may already have permission, masking the fact that the recipient does not. Check the link while signed out or under a separate account, and confirm the intended access scope before sending it.
A private asset or transformed version is unexpectedly accessible
Review the media service’s delivery type and transformation access controls. Cloudinary specifically warns that derived versions of private assets may be publicly accessible by default unless the delivery type and strict transformation controls are configured.
The address stops working later
The cited service documentation describes sharing workflows and access controls, but does not establish a permanent-availability guarantee for every link. Keep a copy of the source image, and check the link again when it is important for a live page or workflow.

Does a shareable image URL have to end in .jpg or .png?
Not necessarily. The URL’s behavior matters more than its visible ending: check whether it opens or serves the image in the way your recipient or application needs.
Can I make a share link private after sending it?
That depends on the host’s access controls. Review the provider’s sharing settings and revoke or restrict access there if available.
