You do not need a dedicated Print Screen key. Identify your laptop’s operating system, then use its built-in capture shortcut: Windows + Shift + S on Windows, Shift-Command-3 or Shift-Command-4 on a Mac, and Shift + Ctrl + Show windows on a Chromebook. Each platform also has an on-screen capture utility when a keyboard shortcut is unavailable.
First identify the operating system
Print Screen shortcuts are not universal. The correct method depends on whether the laptop runs Windows, macOS or ChromeOS. If you are unsure, look at the sign-in screen or open the system settings; the platform name matters more than the laptop manufacturer.

Windows: use Snipping Tool
Capture part of the screen or choose another mode
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- When the Snipping Tool capture experience appears, choose the capture mode shown on screen.
- Select the area you want to keep, or use the available full-screen, window or other mode if it is offered on your Windows version.
- Open the Snipping Tool interface from the app list when you need its full controls, then use the on-screen save control to create an image file.
This route works even when the keyboard has no key labeled PrtSc, PrtScn or Print Screen. The shortcut opens the capture interface rather than requiring a special physical key.
Try the Fn combination on a keyboard without PrtScn
Microsoft also documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar for devices that do not have a PrtScn button. Fn layers differ between laptop models, so the combination may not respond on every keyboard. If nothing happens, use the Snipping Tool overlay or open Snipping Tool from the app list instead.

When the shortcut appears to do nothing
- Press and hold the Windows logo key and Shift, then tap S; releasing a key early can prevent the overlay from opening.
- Check that you are using the Windows logo key, not Ctrl or Alt.
- Open Snipping Tool directly from the Start or app list. This confirms that the utility is present even if the shortcut is intercepted by another program.
- If your laptop uses a compact keyboard, look for a small Fn marking on the Space Bar or another key and try the documented Fn combination once; do not assume every manufacturer maps it identically.

Mac: use the built-in Screenshot shortcuts
Capture the entire display
Press Shift-Command-3. macOS captures the full screen and saves the screenshot to the desktop by default.
Capture a selected rectangle
Press Shift-Command-4, then drag over the part of the display you want. Release the pointer to take the shot.
Open all Screenshot controls
Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app’s control bar. Apple says this shortcut is available in macOS Mojave 10.14 and later. Use the controls when you need to choose a capture option or change where files are saved instead of using the desktop default.

These commands use Command rather than the Windows logo key, so do not substitute Ctrl for Command. Apple’s instructions are at Take a screenshot on Mac.
Chromebook: open Screen Capture
Use the Chromebook keyboard shortcut
Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. Show windows is the key used to display open windows on a Chromebook. ChromeOS opens its Screen Capture controls; follow the on-screen choice for the capture you need.
Use Settings when the key is missing
- Open Settings.
- Choose Screen Capture.
- Select the capture control on screen and make the required selection.
Use an external-keyboard fallback
If an external keyboard has no Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the fallback. ChromeOS automatically copies screenshots and recordings to the clipboard, so paste the result into an image editor, document or message.

A reliable screenshot workflow
- Decide the scope first. Select the full display when context matters; select a rectangle when the image contains private or irrelevant material.
- Hide sensitive information. Close password managers, private messages and account details before capturing. A screenshot records whatever is visible at that moment.
- Check the result immediately. On Windows, open the Snipping Tool interface and save the image. On a Mac, check the desktop or the location configured in Screenshot. On a Chromebook, paste from the clipboard into the destination where you need the image.
- Use the on-screen utility as the fallback. It avoids guessing which Fn layer a laptop manufacturer assigned to a key.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Nothing happens after pressing the shortcut
Verify the operating system and the exact modifier keys. A Windows shortcut will not open macOS or ChromeOS controls, and a Mac shortcut uses Command rather than Ctrl. If the shortcut still fails, open the platform’s capture utility from the app list or Settings.
The laptop has an Fn key, but the Fn shortcut fails
Fn behavior is hardware-specific. On Windows, treat Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative, not a guarantee. Use Snipping Tool’s on-screen control if the combination is ignored.
The keyboard is external or has unfamiliar labels
On ChromeOS, use Ctrl + Shift + F5 when the external keyboard lacks Show windows. On any platform, the graphical capture utility is safer than guessing a key label.
The screenshot is not where you expected
macOS uses the desktop by default, but its Screenshot controls can change the destination. Chromebook sends the result to the clipboard. Windows requires you to use Snipping Tool’s save control when you want a named image file. These are different behaviors, so check the platform before searching the filesystem.

You need a webpage image rather than a picture of your laptop display
The built-in shortcuts capture what is visible on your screen. For an automated image of a URL, use the API option below instead; it is a different job from capturing your desktop.
