Click the player first, press K to pause, use . to advance one frame or , to move back, and capture the paused picture.
Capture an exact YouTube frame on a computer
This method uses YouTube’s built-in controls and a screenshot feature already on your computer. It does not require an extension, download, camera or capture card.
1. Open the video and focus the player
- Open the YouTube video in a desktop browser.
- Click once inside the video player. In YouTube’s newer computer experience, keyboard shortcuts may not work until the player has focus.
- Move the playhead near the scene you need. You can drag the timeline or let the video play.
2. Pause at the scene
Press K to pause. You can also click the pause control. If the controls disappear, click the player again before using the keyboard.
3. Move one frame at a time
- Press . (period) to skip to the next frame while paused.
- Press , (comma) to move back one frame while paused.
Use the period and comma keys repeatedly until the exact expression, subtitle, diagram or action you need is visible. YouTube’s shortcut table describes the period key as moving to the next frame while the video is paused. Frame stepping is available in the desktop player; behavior can differ in mobile apps or other embedded players.

4. Hide controls and overlays
Wait briefly for the playback controls to fade. Move the pointer away from the video. If a title, tooltip or other overlay remains, press Esc, click an empty area of the page, or wait for the overlay to disappear without unpausing the video. Full-screen mode can give you a larger image, but it may change the visible crop and browser controls, so check the result before saving.
5. Take the screenshot
Use the screenshot command for your operating system or browser and select only the player area. Save as PNG when text or diagrams must remain sharp; JPEG is smaller but can introduce compression artifacts. The exact pixels available are limited by the video’s displayed size and your screen scaling.
Using Microsoft Edge’s built-in Screenshot tool
Microsoft Edge includes a Screenshot command that can capture moving content after you pause it at the desired moment. Availability and controls can vary by device, market and browser version.
- Pause the YouTube video and use . or , to select the frame.
- Open Edge’s Screenshot tool from the page’s right-click menu or from Edge settings. On supported desktop versions, Ctrl+Shift+S opens it.
- Choose the area containing the player, avoiding browser chrome and unrelated page content.
- Use the tool’s copy or save action. Confirm that the saved image shows the paused frame rather than a later playback moment.
If the shortcut does nothing, click the page first, check whether another application has reserved the key combination, or open the command from the context menu instead.

Browser and operating-system alternatives
Windows
Windows’ built-in screen-capture commands can capture the paused player. Select a rectangular region when possible so the address bar, recommendations and comments are excluded. After capturing, paste the result into an image editor if you need to crop, annotate or change the file format.
macOS
Use the system screenshot controls to capture a selected region around the paused player. Keep the player at its largest useful size before capturing, and verify that playback controls have disappeared.
Chrome, Firefox and other browsers
Use the browser’s current screenshot or “capture area” command if it provides one; otherwise use the operating system’s tool. Names and shortcuts differ by browser version, so follow the labels shown in your installation. The important sequence is the same: focus the player, pause, frame-step, then capture.
When an extension is worth considering
A YouTube-focused Chrome extension can add a camera button or shortcut and may save the current frame as an image. One Chrome Web Store listing, YouTubeScreenShot, says it saves the current frame as a PNG and recommends pausing first. Its listing also cautions that its frame-adjustment button may not move exactly one frame each time. Treat those as publisher statements, not guarantees.

Another listing, Screenshot for YouTube & Other Video Services, advertises a keyboard shortcut, clipboard copying and PNG, JPEG and WebP choices. Features and permissions can change with updates. Before installing any extension:
- Read the current Chrome Web Store description and requested permissions.
- Check whether it runs on youtube.com and on embedded players you use.
- Test a non-sensitive video first and confirm where files are saved.
- Remove it if it adds unwanted overlays, advertisements or access you do not need.
For occasional captures, the built-in workflow avoids this extra software. An extension is mainly a convenience choice when you repeat the task often.
Quality, cropping and accessibility checks
Get the cleanest image
- Maximize the player or use full-screen mode only if it produces the crop you want.
- Pause before changing display size; resizing can cause the frame to redraw.
- Wait for subtitles, charts or images to finish rendering before you capture.
- Capture at the largest practical on-screen size, then crop rather than enlarging a small screenshot.
Keep context when it matters
For a tutorial, citation or classroom note, retain the video title, channel and timestamp separately from the image. Cropping away all context may make the frame hard to identify later. Do not imply that a screenshot is your own footage or remove attribution when the surrounding project requires it.
Respect rights and privacy
A screenshot is a reproduction of video content. Follow the creator’s licence, YouTube’s terms and applicable copyright law, especially for commercial publication or redistribution. Avoid capturing private messages, personal information or children’s faces unless you have an appropriate reason and permission.

Troubleshooting
The period or comma key does not move the frame
- Click inside the player again; the page may have focus instead.
- Confirm the video is paused. Frame stepping is a paused-player function.
- Use the period and comma keys, not the greater-than and less-than symbols produced with Shift.
- Try the desktop website rather than a mobile app or an embedded player.
The screenshot includes controls, subtitles or a tooltip
Move the pointer away, wait for controls to fade, and capture again. If subtitles are part of the desired frame, leave them enabled; otherwise turn them off before pausing.
The captured image is black or shows a different moment
Make sure the video is actually paused before invoking the screenshot tool. Some capture commands target the active window or a selected rectangle rather than the video surface. Reopen the saved file and compare it with the paused player before closing the tab.
The image looks blurry
Increase the player size and capture again instead of enlarging the existing file. A screenshot cannot recover detail that was not displayed on your screen. Browser zoom and operating-system display scaling can also affect the pixel dimensions.
An extension does not appear or no longer works
Check its current listing, permissions and browser compatibility. Updates can change shortcuts and controls. Disable conflicting extensions and use the built-in method when you need a predictable result.

Can I capture a frame from a YouTube video on a phone?
The documented period/comma frame-step workflow is for the desktop player. Mobile apps and mobile browsers may not expose those shortcuts; use the device’s pause and screenshot controls or move the task to a computer when single-frame precision matters.
Which image format should I use?
PNG is usually preferable for subtitles, interface text and diagrams. JPEG can create smaller files, while WebP may be useful when your editor or website supports it.
Why is my frame slightly different from the one I wanted?
Video seeking can land between scene changes, and an extension’s frame button may not advance exactly one frame. Pause, click the player, then use YouTube’s period and comma keys and verify the saved image.
