For most Windows screenshots, press Windows+Shift+S. Choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip, select what you need, then use the notification to annotate, copy, save, or share. For a full-screen image saved automatically, press Windows+PrtScn. To capture only the active window, press Alt+Print Screen.
Choose the shortcut that matches the result you need

The important distinction is destination: Snipping Tool and the Print Screen shortcuts may copy to the clipboard, save a file automatically, or do both. Decide whether you want a quick paste or an editable file before choosing.
Use Snipping Tool for a precise screenshot
- Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool toolbar appears.
- Choose a mode: rectangular snip for a box-shaped area, freeform snip for an irregular outline, window snip for one window, or full-screen snip for every visible display.
- Drag over the area when the selected mode requires it. For a window snip, select the window itself; for full screen, the capture is taken immediately.
- Use the notification that appears to open the editor. From there you can copy the image, save it, share it, crop it, draw with a pen, highlight details, or run Text actions/OCR.
If the notification disappears, the image is still available on the clipboard immediately after the snip. Press Ctrl+V in Paint, a document, chat, or another image-capable app. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu when you need its editor or delay controls rather than the keyboard overlay.
Save a full-screen screenshot automatically
Press Windows+PrtScn. Windows captures all visible screen content and writes the image to your Pictures folder’s Screenshots subfolder. In File Explorer, open Pictures, then Screenshots. This is the fastest method when you do not need to crop or annotate first.

Some laptops place Print Screen on a shared key. If Windows+PrtScn does nothing, hold Fn while pressing the key, or use Windows+Shift+S instead. Keyboard layouts and hardware differ, so the key may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen.
Capture the active window only
- Click the window you want so it has focus.
- Press Alt+Print Screen.
- Open Paint, an image editor, email, or a document and press Ctrl+V.
- Save the pasted image from that application.
This method excludes other windows and the desktop. It copies rather than automatically saving, so do not close the application containing the pasted image until you have saved it.
Capture a menu that disappears
Use Snipping Tool’s delay. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, select the delay control, and choose 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 seconds. Choose the snip mode, start the countdown, and open the menu or hover state before the timer expires. When the delay ends, the menu is included in the capture.

A delayed snip is useful for context menus, tooltip text, menus opened by a click, and other interfaces that vanish when you press a shortcut. If the first attempt misses the state, repeat with a longer delay and arrange the pointer before starting.

Edit, extract text, and share
The Snipping Tool editor provides pen and highlighter tools, cropping, copying, saving, and sharing. Its Text actions/OCR feature can recognize words in a captured image so you can copy text instead of retyping it. Use the video-capture entry point, Windows+Shift+R, when a still image cannot show the interaction you need.
For a quick handoff, copy the snip from the editor and paste it into your destination. For a durable record, save it from the editor and choose the image format and folder offered by Windows. A clipboard capture is temporary; another copy operation can replace it.

Where each screenshot goes
- Windows+Shift+S: the image is copied to the clipboard and a notification opens the Snipping Tool editor.
- Windows+PrtScn: the file is stored under
PicturesScreenshots. - PrtScn or Alt+Print Screen: the image is copied to the clipboard, so paste it into an editor before doing another copy operation.
If you cannot find an automatically saved image, open File Explorer and browse to Pictures > Screenshots. If you used a clipboard-only shortcut, there will be no file until you paste and save it.
Common problems and fixes
The shortcut does nothing
Try Windows+Shift+S, which does not depend on the Print Screen key. On a laptop, retry the Print Screen shortcut with Fn. If your keyboard has no usable Print Screen key, an external USB or wireless keyboard with that key is an optional accessory; Snipping Tool remains the built-in workaround.

PrtScn and Alt+Print Screen copy an image only. Open Paint or another editor, press Ctrl+V, and save the result. For automatic file creation, use Windows+PrtScn.

The screenshot is the wrong window
For an active-window capture, click the target first and wait until its title bar is focused, then press Alt+Print Screen. For a more controlled result, use Windows+Shift+S and select window snip.
A menu closes before it is captured
Do not begin with the instantaneous shortcut. Open Snipping Tool, set a 1–5 second delay, start the snip, and open the menu during the countdown.
You cannot find the saved file
Only Windows+PrtScn saves automatically to PicturesScreenshots. The other Print Screen shortcuts require pasting and saving manually, while a Snipping Tool capture is available through its notification/editor and clipboard.

You need to prove text or an interaction
Use the Snipping Tool editor’s Text actions/OCR for selectable words. If a still image is insufficient, press Windows+Shift+R for a video snip of the region.
