If an app, document workflow, or website will not accept a .webp file, decode the still image and save a new file as PNG or JPEG. Use PNG when transparency or a lossless output matters; use JPG when the destination requires JPEG and an opaque image is acceptable. Renaming .webp to .jpg or .png does not convert the data.
How to convert WebP to PNG
Google’s official dwebp utility decodes a still WebP image to PNG with one command:
dwebp input.webp -o output.png
The command follows Google’s documented usage examples and PNG is the default output format. See the WebP getting-started guide and the dwebp reference for installation details and supported options.
What the PNG command preserves
- PNG is appropriate when the source has transparent pixels. WebP supports an alpha channel, while JPEG does not.
- PNG uses a lossless output encoding, so it avoids adding a new JPEG-style lossy step. It cannot restore detail that was already discarded when a lossy WebP was created.
dwebpcan also write PAM, PPM, or PGM with its format options. PPM discards alpha; choose PNG when transparency must survive.
Check the result
Open output.png in the destination application and inspect transparent edges, text, and fine detail. If the file still is not accepted, confirm that the destination accepts PNG rather than only JPEG, and check the file extension and actual file type.

How to convert WebP to JPG
ImageMagick’s magick program uses the output extension to select the target format:
magick input.webp output.jpg
This is the direct application of ImageMagick’s documented general conversion syntax. WebP reading and writing require a build with the WebP delegate enabled; ImageMagick lists delegate-dependent support in its format table. The general command documentation is at ImageMagick Convert.
Handle transparent WebP correctly
JPEG has no alpha channel. When a WebP contains transparency, conversion to JPG must flatten those pixels against a background. If the resulting background is unexpected, convert the original WebP to PNG instead, or use your image editor’s background-color control before exporting the JPG. Do not judge the result from the filename alone: open it and inspect transparent areas.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose a quality setting deliberately
JPEG encoding is lossy, and the encoder’s quality setting affects both artifacts and file size. A JPG export can therefore add another lossy generation to an already-lossy WebP. Keep the original WebP, export once at the quality your destination requires, and avoid repeatedly converting the converted file.
Use a graphical editor for a one-off file
For a single image, open the WebP in an editor that supports WebP, then choose its Export or Save As control and select PNG or JPEG. Menus and built-in WebP support vary by application, operating system, and version, so check the current help for the specific editor you use.

- Open the original
.webp; do not merely change its extension. - Choose Export, Save As, or the equivalent command.
- Select PNG for transparency or JPEG for an opaque image required by the destination.
- Set a background color if exporting transparent artwork to JPEG.
- Save under a new filename and open the result to verify dimensions, transparency, and visual quality.
This route is often simplest when you need to crop, resize, remove a background, or inspect the image visually before choosing the output format.
Which format should you choose?
| Decision | PNG | JPG/JPEG |
|---|---|---|
| Transparency | Preserves alpha when the decoder and source contain it. | Cannot preserve alpha; transparent areas must be flattened. |
| Additional compression | Lossless output avoids another lossy encoding, but cannot recover detail lost in a lossy source WebP. | Lossy encoding may add artifacts; results depend on encoder settings. |
| Best destination | Graphics, screenshots, text-heavy artwork, or any workflow that accepts PNG. | A service that specifically requires JPEG or an opaque photographic image. |
| Documented command here | dwebp input.webp -o output.png |
magick input.webp output.jpg, with WebP delegate support. |
WebP itself may be lossy or lossless and may contain alpha transparency or animation, so the extension does not tell you everything about the source. These properties are defined in RFC 9649, the WebP Image Format specification.

Will converting WebP make the file smaller?
There is no reliable size prediction for an individual conversion. Google’s overview reports that WebP lossless images are 26% smaller than PNG in its comparison, and that WebP lossy images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality. Google’s FAQ describes about 30% more compression than JPEG on average for its WebP lossy study. Those are format-level comparisons, not promises about the size of your exported JPG or PNG, and they do not describe converting WebP back to another format. See Google’s WebP overview and WebP FAQ.
A PNG made from a lossy WebP can be larger while still preserving the pixels delivered by the decoder. A JPG may be smaller, but it can introduce additional artifacts. Let the destination requirement, transparency, and visual quality decide; do not choose solely by extension.
What if the WebP is animated?
A WebP file can contain either a still image or an animation; RFC 9649 describes both cases. Google’s dwebp reference explicitly states: “Animated WebP files are not supported.” Therefore, do not use dwebp for an animated source when you need every frame.

Choose the intended animation result
- If you need one representative frame, open the animation in a tool that can display it, select the frame, and export that frame as PNG or JPG.
- If you need the complete motion, use an animation-capable editor or converter and verify whether it exports a sequence of images, an animated format, or only the first frame.
- If a receiving service accepts neither animated WebP nor your chosen sequence format, confirm its frame-rate, duration, and supported container requirements before conversion.
Always test an animated file separately from still images. A command that succeeds for a still WebP is not evidence that all frames were retained.

Batch conversion without losing originals
Batch work is useful for a folder of still images, but shell syntax differs between Windows, macOS, and Linux. The safest process is:
- Copy the originals to a working folder and keep the source files unchanged.
- Test three or four representative files, including one with transparency and one with large dimensions.
- Use
dwebprepeatedly for PNG output, or ImageMagick’s batch facilities for a build that reports WebP delegate support. - Compare the generated files with the originals and confirm that filenames, dimensions, and transparency meet the destination’s rules.
- Only then process the full folder, writing to a separate output directory.
There is no single portable loop that behaves identically in every shell. Google documents shell examples for converting in the opposite direction, not a universal reverse-conversion loop, so adapt batch syntax to your shell and test it before deleting anything.
Common problems and fixes
“The output is still a WebP”
Changing the filename extension does not decode or re-encode the image. Run dwebp, use ImageMagick, or export through an editor, then verify the resulting file type.
dwebp reports an unsupported file
The source may be animated, damaged, or not actually WebP. Confirm that it opens in a WebP-capable viewer. For animation, use a tool that explicitly supports animated WebP; dwebp does not.

ImageMagick cannot read WebP
Your ImageMagick build may lack its WebP delegate. Check the formats reported by that installation against ImageMagick’s format documentation, then install a build with WebP support or use the official libwebp utility.
Transparent areas became black or white
That is expected when converting alpha to JPEG unless you choose a background. Export PNG to retain transparency, or set the desired background in the editor before creating the JPG.
The JPG looks worse than the WebP
The export may have introduced a second lossy encoding, or its quality setting may be too low. Return to the original WebP, export once at a higher quality, and compare at 100% zoom. Converting cannot recover detail already lost in the source.
The output is unexpectedly large
PNG is lossless and may be larger than a lossy source. File size also depends on image content, dimensions, and encoder settings. If the destination accepts JPEG and the image is opaque, compare a suitably encoded JPG, but inspect artifacts before replacing the PNG.

FAQ
How do I change a WebP file to JPEG?
Decode the original WebP with ImageMagick’s magick input.webp output.jpg command or export it from a WebP-capable editor, then verify that any transparency has been flattened as intended.
Can PNG restore quality lost in a WebP?
No. PNG prevents another lossy encoding at export, but it cannot reconstruct detail that the original WebP compression removed.
Why does an application reject my converted file?
Check the application’s exact format, color, dimension, and file-size requirements. A valid PNG or JPEG can still be incompatible with a workflow that permits only a narrower variant.
