Web system monitoring is not one tool or one dashboard. A reliable setup combines external checks that reveal whether users can reach and use a service with infrastructure and application telemetry that helps explain failures. Choose tools based on what you need to observe, how you will act on alerts, and the cost and effort of collecting and retaining the data.

What web system monitoring should tell you

Monitoring answers two related questions: is the service healthy from the user’s perspective, and if not, what is causing the problem? A simple uptime check can alert you that a URL stopped responding, but it cannot establish that a customer can sign in, complete a purchase, or retrieve the data they need. Likewise, healthy CPU and memory readings do not prove that an application is serving requests correctly.

OpenTelemetry’s observability primer frames reliability as whether a service is doing what users expect it to do. That is a useful standard for evaluating a monitoring plan: connect signals to service behavior and user outcomes, rather than treating a green dashboard as proof of reliability. See the OpenTelemetry observability primer.

Availability and synthetic monitoring

Availability monitoring checks whether a site, endpoint, or scripted path responds. Synthetic monitoring runs checks from outside the service, potentially testing response time or a sequence of actions. Grafana describes synthetic monitoring as a way to simulate user journeys and detect availability or latency issues from global locations in its synthetic monitoring overview.

Use a basic endpoint check for a simple reachability signal. For important workflows, test the actual user journey or API behavior: a page returning HTTP 200 does not necessarily mean its key content loaded or that a transaction can finish.

Infrastructure monitoring

Infrastructure monitoring tracks resources and components such as hosts, containers, networks, CPU, and memory. These measurements help locate capacity constraints and component failures. OpenTelemetry lists error rate, CPU utilization, and request rate as examples of metrics in its observability primer.

Application performance monitoring and observability

Application monitoring uses instrumentation and telemetry to investigate what the software is doing: which operations are slow, where errors occur, and how requests behave across dependencies. Grafana’s application observability documentation describes analysis across metrics, logs, traces, and profiles.

Metrics, logs, traces, and OpenTelemetry

Metrics, logs, and traces are complementary signals, not interchangeable formats. They help answer different questions during diagnosis.

Signal What it contains Useful question
Metrics Numeric measurements summarized over time, such as request rate, error rate, or CPU utilization. When did the system’s behavior change, and how widespread is it?
Logs Events or messages emitted by applications and infrastructure. What happened at a particular time, and what details did the component record?
Traces Connected records of work across the steps of a request path. Which service or dependency contributed to this request’s delay or failure?

OpenTelemetry provides instrumentation and conventions for collecting and exporting telemetry. It is not the place where telemetry is necessarily stored or visualized: its overview explicitly says, “OpenTelemetry is not an observability backend itself.” You still need a compatible backend for storage, querying, dashboards, and alerting.

This separation can make instrumentation more portable, but it does not make all backends equivalent. Verify that the backend supports the signals, integrations, retention, query workflows, and alerting your team needs. OpenTelemetry describes itself as a vendor-neutral observability framework in its overview; actual backend capabilities remain product-specific.

Set service objectives before choosing dashboards

Service-level indicators (SLIs) measure service behavior; service-level objectives (SLOs) define the target for that behavior. Google Cloud’s SRE guidance describes using SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets to monitor service health and mitigate risk. Its SLO monitoring documentation is a starting point for teams applying those concepts.

Start with a user-facing indicator that matters for the service, such as successful request rate or latency for a critical operation. Then decide what objective is appropriate and how an alert should lead to action. Infrastructure metrics can help explain a breach; they should not substitute for the service indicator itself.

How to compare web monitoring tools

There is no universal best monitoring product. Compare candidates against the service and team you actually have, including the questions below.

Coverage and user perspective

  • Does it check only reachability, or also browser journeys, APIs, application performance, infrastructure, logs, traces, and dependencies?
  • Can you monitor the user actions that define success, not just whether a server responds?
  • Can you express alerts in terms of the SLIs and SLOs your team uses?

Instrumentation, integrations, and ownership

  • Does the backend accept OpenTelemetry data, or does it require proprietary agents or formats?
  • Does it fit your cloud, runtime, alerting, and incident-management workflows?
  • Is it hosted, self-managed, or a mix? Include the work of maintaining collectors, dashboards, retention, and alert tuning in the comparison.

Data volume and cost

  • Find the billing unit, included usage, retention limits, and any costs tied to ingest, queries, or additional features.
  • Estimate data volume at the level of telemetry you intend to retain, rather than assuming the initial deployment’s bill will remain fixed.
  • Check current terms directly before choosing: pricing and product limits can change.

Representative approaches and where they fit

OpenTelemetry with a separate backend

Choose this pattern when you want a standards-based instrumentation and collection layer and are prepared to select and operate a backend separately. OpenTelemetry does not replace storage or visualization, so evaluate the backend on its own capabilities and operating cost. Start with the project’s overview and observability primer.

Grafana OSS or Grafana Cloud

Grafana OSS is self-managed, while Grafana Cloud is a hosted service, as described in Grafana’s application observability documentation. Grafana’s application-observability material describes an approach using OpenTelemetry and the Prometheus data model, and its SRE offering describes tools for service reliability. Review the current docs for your intended setup: Grafana’s documentation notes a knowledge-graph experience replacing the classic experience for new Grafana Cloud organizations, and the classic documentation identifies onboarding after September 7, 2026 as a version boundary. Product flows can therefore differ by organization and documentation path. The synthetic monitoring page describes external journey and availability checks.

At access in 2026, Grafana Labs’ site reliability page displayed Pro from $19/month plus usage; the price and terms are volatile, so verify current pricing and limits on the Grafana SRE page.

Google Cloud monitoring and SRE tooling

Teams already operating on Google Cloud may find its monitoring and SRE tooling a natural candidate because the service consoles document dashboards, logs, metrics, traces, SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets. This is a fit inference based on Google’s documented cloud integration, not a claim that it is superior for every environment. See Google Cloud’s SLO monitoring guidance.

Cloudflare Tunnel diagnostics

If a service uses Cloudflare Tunnel, Cloudflare documents tunnel status, diagnostic logs, metrics, and exporting metrics to Prometheus and Grafana in its tunnel monitoring documentation. This is targeted visibility into tunnel health; that documentation is not evidence of a complete general-purpose application monitoring suite.

New Relic and Datadog

New Relic and Datadog are observability vendors, but the available vendor materials here do not establish a comparative product ranking. Compare their current product documentation, supported signals, integrations, deployment model, and pricing against your requirements rather than inferring superiority from brand or partner-program material.

Monitoring browser-rendered pages and screenshot checks

A screenshot can provide a visual record of what a page rendered at a particular capture, useful when investigating layout regressions or checking a page as it appears to a visitor. It complements uptime checks and telemetry; it does not replace application metrics, logs, traces, or a synthetic test that validates a workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For developer workflows that need a screenshot API or AI-agent capture, ScreenshotNeo is the first service to consider here: it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a full system-monitoring backend.

Or skip the browser setup

One GET request can return a screenshot in PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF. Create an API key and use this cURL request (replace the target URL as needed):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. The API also accepts the parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier.

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each removal step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server offers the take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Operational checks that make monitoring useful

  • Define who receives each alert and what action they should take; remove alerts that have no owner or response path.
  • Separate user-visible symptoms from diagnostic signals. A failed journey may be the alert; CPU or a dependency trace may help explain it.
  • Review thresholds, data retention, and collection volume as the service changes.
  • Test checks and notification paths so a monitoring failure does not silently resemble a healthy service.
  • Use more than one kind of evidence when diagnosing an incident: external checks show observed behavior, while telemetry can reveal internal causes.

Troubleshooting common monitoring gaps

Uptime is green, but users report failures

A simple endpoint check may prove only that a URL responded. Add a browser or API journey that exercises the important action and verifies an expected result, then connect it to an appropriate service indicator.

An alert fires, but the dashboard does not explain why

Check whether the affected operation is instrumented end to end. Metrics can show when behavior shifted; logs add event detail; traces can connect a request across services. Confirm that these signals are collected and queryable in the selected backend.

Telemetry exists, but changing backends is difficult

Determine whether instrumentation is tied to proprietary agents, formats, or backend-specific assumptions. OpenTelemetry can support a more portable instrumentation layer, but validate the receiving backend’s supported data and features before planning a migration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Costs or operating work are higher than expected

Revisit the pricing unit, ingest volume, retention, and query needs. For self-managed tooling, include the team’s work to run and maintain the monitoring stack; for hosted services, confirm current limits and usage charges.

Choosing a practical starting point

  1. Write down the user-facing services and critical journeys you need to protect.
  2. Choose an availability check and a small set of meaningful SLIs for those services.
  3. Add infrastructure and application instrumentation that helps diagnose the likely failure modes.
  4. Select a backend based on signal support, integrations, ownership model, retention, and cost.
  5. Set objectives and alert routes, then verify that a detected issue reaches someone who can act.

For a small site, this may begin with an external availability check plus a carefully chosen user-journey test. For a distributed application, it may require infrastructure metrics, application traces and logs, and a backend with suitable retention and incident workflows. Scale the system to the questions the team needs answered, not to the number of panels it can display.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is OpenTelemetry a monitoring platform?

No. It provides instrumentation and telemetry conventions; you still need a backend for storage, querying, visualization, and alerting.

Can a screenshot API replace uptime monitoring?

No. A screenshot records a rendered page, while uptime checks and application telemetry answer availability and diagnostic questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should every application use the same monitoring stack?

Not necessarily. The right approach depends on required signal coverage, user journeys, existing integrations, operating capacity, and data costs.
