What an iOS App Store screenshot generator does
An iOS App Store screenshot generator turns app screens into store listing images. Depending on the workflow, it may capture screens from a running app, place them in a device frame, add a headline or explanatory caption, and prepare variants for different languages and device targets.
There are two distinct outputs developers often call “screenshots”: a direct image of an app screen, and a designed promotional composition built around that screen. Either can be uploaded as a screenshot if it meets Apple’s current file and dimension requirements. A generated image is not an app preview video; Apple treats previews as a separate optional asset type.

Apple’s screenshot requirements
File type, transparency, and quantity
- App Store Connect accepts one to ten screenshots in JPEG, JPG, or PNG format.
- Images cannot contain an alpha channel or transparency. Export a flattened, opaque image; a PNG file can still be opaque.
- Apple specifies accepted dimensions by device family and display class. The applicable iPhone sizes are not a substitute for iPad sizes when your app also runs on iPad.
Use Apple’s current specification table to select dimensions. It covers iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Watch. Do not rely on a remembered pixel size or a template that has not been checked against the live requirements.
Which device families need screenshots?
Do not assume that every app needs assets for every Apple device family. Prepare assets for the platforms and display targets relevant to your app, and verify the required set shown for your app in App Store Connect. If the app runs on iPad, check the iPad entries separately; an iPhone image does not automatically establish that the iPad requirement is met.
When Apple can scale screenshots
Apple says that when the app interface is the same across device sizes and localizations, you can provide only the highest-resolution screenshots required and App Store Connect can scale them down. If you do not want scaled versions, use Media Manager to add screenshots for other device sizes and localizations. The condition matters: if layouts, visible content, or navigation differ by size or language, inspect the result for each target rather than assuming a scaled image accurately represents that experience.
A reliable screenshot-generation workflow
- Choose the release targets. List the Apple platforms and device display classes your app supports, along with the languages for the product page. Check the current dimensions and any required display targets in Apple’s specification.
- Capture representative app states. Use clean, realistic screens that show the actual experience. Plan a sequence that communicates the app’s main benefit, core task, and useful details without implying capabilities the app does not have. Capture actual localized UI where it changes, rather than translating only a caption over a mismatched interface.
- Compose and localize. If using a design template or generator, place the app screen in the composition, add concise captions if useful, and create a version for each intended language. Check line breaks, text truncation, reading order, and legibility at the final dimensions. Keep important UI visible instead of hiding it behind decorative copy or a device frame.
- Export opaque files at accepted dimensions. Choose JPEG/JPG or PNG, ensure transparency is removed, and export to a dimension listed by Apple for the intended target. If producing multiple sizes, name files so platform, display class, and locale are unambiguous.
- Upload in App Store Connect. Open the app’s product page and add the images in the screenshot area for the appropriate platform and localization. Apple lists screenshot uploads as available in statuses including Prepare for Submission, Invalid Binary, Rejected, Metadata Rejected, and Developer Rejected. Use Media Manager to add other device-size or localization sets when needed; Apple’s upload guide explains the flow.
- Review the actual uploaded set. Confirm order, crops, localized copy, and device target in App Store Connect. Do not treat a successful file upload as proof that all required screenshots for submission are present.
Automating uploads with App Store Connect API
For teams generating many localized or device-specific sets, Apple exposes screenshot resources through the App Store Connect API. The API provides resources for uploading and downloading images for an app locale and display target. It is an upload-management route, not a screenshot renderer: your workflow still has to create valid image files and associate them with the correct app, locale, and target.

Apple cautions that some screenshot sizes are required for review submission. Missing required assets can cause an error at submission, so automate validation against the current target requirements rather than assuming that every optional-looking slot is optional for your app.
Choosing a generator or building your own
A screenshot generator is workflow software, not a guarantee of App Store acceptance. Available information does not establish a current, apples-to-apples winner among browser-based, open-source, macOS, or design-app workflows. Before adopting one, verify its current device-size presets, batch export, localization handling, editable captions and frames, privacy treatment for app screens, export validation, and pricing directly with its vendor.
If you build the workflow yourself, keep capture, composition, localization, export, and upload as separate stages. Store source captures and editable layouts so a changed dimension or translation does not require reconstructing each image from scratch. Generate filenames and a manifest that ties each output to its target and locale; validate dimensions and opacity before upload.

Troubleshooting rejected or incorrect screenshots
App Store Connect rejects the file or dimensions
Check the exact device family and display class against Apple’s live specification. Re-export to an accepted dimension and a supported file type, then upload the corrected asset. A dimension accepted for one target may not satisfy another.
The image uploads, but submission reports missing screenshots
Review the target’s required assets in App Store Connect and compare them with the files uploaded for that app and locale. Apple’s API documentation notes that missing required screenshot sizes can trigger a submission error. Add the missing set rather than relying on a successful upload of another target’s image.

Flatten the composition against a solid background and export again. Changing the extension or converting to PNG does not remove an alpha channel by itself; confirm the resulting image is opaque.

A scaled screenshot looks wrong on another device or language
Scaling is appropriate only under Apple’s stated condition that the interface is the same across sizes and localizations. If content reflows, controls differ, or text changes materially, produce and review a separate screenshot for that target or locale using Media Manager.
Captions are clipped or hard to read
Inspect the final exported image at its actual pixel dimensions, not only inside a zoomed design canvas. Shorten copy, adjust line breaks, or recompose the layout; then export and review the uploaded version.
An upload option is unavailable
Check the app’s App Store Connect status. Apple identifies Prepare for Submission, Invalid Binary, Rejected, Metadata Rejected, and Developer Rejected among statuses eligible for screenshot upload. If your app is in a different state, consult the current upload guide and the controls shown for that app.
Cost, speed, and reliability considerations
Generation cost depends on the workflow you choose, and the available information does not establish comparable current prices across screenshot-generator products. Account for the number of targets and locales, batch export, revision effort, and whether layouts remain editable. A low-friction single-image tool may become labor-intensive when each language or device needs a separate composition.

For reliable release work, preserve source captures and layout files, validate file type, dimensions, and transparency automatically, and retain a mapping from each output to its target and locale. Re-check Apple’s specification whenever device requirements may have changed. Neither a generator’s preset nor an automated upload should be treated as a substitute for reviewing the final product-page presentation.
Common questions
Are App Store screenshots the same as app previews?
No. Screenshots are still images; app previews are a separate video asset type. Apple’s upload guide discusses both, but the screenshot count and image-format rules apply to screenshots.
Can I use a browser screenshot API for an App Store image?
Only when the content to capture is available as a web page, and the resulting image still needs the right composition, locale, opacity, dimensions, and Apple-side review. A website capture API does not automatically create screenshots from a native iOS app.
Do I need a physical iPhone or iPad?
The cited Apple requirements establish acceptable uploaded image assets, not a requirement to own a physical device for screenshot generation. A physical device may be useful for some capture workflows, but it is not established as necessary for creating compliant store images.
Can a screenshot tool guarantee approval?
No tool can be assumed to guarantee acceptance based on generating an image. App Store Connect requirements depend on the current specification and the app’s submission targets; validate the assets and required set with Apple’s documentation and interface.
