Format support belongs to each consumer. If a LinkedIn website preview must work predictably, use JPG or PNG (GIF is also listed) and make the image at least 1200 × 627 pixels. LinkedIn’s separate support for WebP in uploaded media does not prove that its URL-preview crawler accepts WebP.
For a site shared to several destinations, treat JPG or PNG as the compatibility baseline. Use WebP only when the destination’s current preview documentation explicitly allows it or when you have verified the rendered card on that destination.
What the Open Graph image field actually specifies
Open Graph metadata identifies the image associated with a page. The core declaration is an image URL:

A valid MIME declaration is useful metadata. It is not a capability negotiation mechanism: writing image/webp does not make a WebP decoder appear in a social crawler.
Why the file URL and the file bytes both matter
The crawler must fetch the URL and decode the response. A URL ending in .webp is not enough if the server returns an error, requires authentication, or sends a different content type. Conversely, a response that is technically valid WebP can still be ignored by a consumer that does not support WebP for link previews.
What LinkedIn documents for website previews
Preview-specific guidance lists JPG, PNG, or GIF
LinkedIn’s help guidance for making a website shareable lists JPG, PNG, or GIF as the image file types for a URL preview and specifies a minimum image size of 1200 × 627 pixels. Because WebP is not listed in that preview guidance, JPG or PNG is the defensible choice when LinkedIn reliability matters.
Uploaded-media support is a different claim
LinkedIn also has a general media-type page that lists WEBP as supported media. That page concerns files a user uploads as media. It does not establish that LinkedIn’s crawler will fetch and decode a WebP supplied through og:image while generating a link preview. Do not use the upload list as evidence for crawler behavior.

Retrieval can fail even with a supported format
LinkedIn notes that an image may not appear when its retrieval is blocked or when it is stored in a protected location. Format selection therefore solves only one part of preview reliability. The image must also be reachable by the crawler without a login or other protection.
What you can safely assume about other destinations
The Open Graph specification does not publish a universal, current WebP compatibility table for every social network, chat application, or reader. The available official guidance establishes the LinkedIn case above, not a blanket rule for Facebook, X, messaging apps, or private sharing tools.

If one page is shared broadly, optimize for the least certain destination rather than assuming that support in a browser or an upload dialog carries over to URL previews.
Choosing a format for your sharing workflow
Use JPG or PNG as the compatibility baseline
JPG and PNG are the safer defaults when a card must render across destinations with different crawler implementations. Pick the format that fits the artwork: JPG for photographic cards and PNG when you need lossless edges, transparency in the source workflow, or crisp text. The destination still receives a regular image URL; the important point is that the bytes are in a format its preview service documents or commonly handles.

Use WebP when you control the destination set
WebP can be reasonable when every destination you care about explicitly supports WebP for URL previews or your own verification confirms it. Record the exact URL, response headers, dimensions, and destination result so a later image change does not silently remove the card.
Do not treat a WebP-first list as a universal fallback
Some consumers may select the first image in a sequence, while others may apply their own rules. If a JPG or PNG fallback is important, make that the primary og:image rather than assuming that a later entry will be selected. Keep the primary resource publicly fetchable and stable.
Implementing robust Open Graph metadata
A conservative card uses a JPG or PNG as the primary image and states its dimensions and MIME type:

<meta property='og:image:type' content='image/webp'>Then verify the result on every destination that matters. Do not claim cross-platform support merely because the page source validates.
Verification checklist before you share a URL
- Fetch the image without a login. Open the exact
og:imageURL from an unauthenticated request and confirm that it returns the image, not an access page or redirect loop. - Check the response type. The HTTP response should identify the actual bytes with the corresponding image MIME type. A WebP URL that returns HTML is a failed image, regardless of its extension.
- Confirm dimensions. For LinkedIn website previews, use at least 1200 × 627 pixels. Keep the important text inside the area that survives the destination’s crop.
- Inspect the rendered card. Share the URL on each target service, not only in a browser. A crawler can have different format support and retrieval rules from a normal browser.
- Test after changing the asset. Keep the URL stable only when the destination can be forced to re-fetch it; otherwise use a deliberately versioned image URL and update the metadata together.
- Record the working combination. Save the image URL, MIME type, dimensions, and destination result in your release notes. This makes a later redesign or format conversion auditable.
Troubleshooting missing or incorrect previews

Performance, reliability, and maintenance trade-offs
File size is only one variable
A smaller WebP can reduce transfer work, but a format that a destination cannot decode produces no preview at all. For social cards, predictable retrieval and documented compatibility usually matter more than choosing the smallest possible file.
Keep the asset durable
Use a stable HTTPS URL, avoid access controls on the image itself, and preserve the declared dimensions. If your deployment pipeline transforms images, verify that it has not changed the response MIME type or replaced the card with an HTML error document.
Separate source optimization from preview compatibility
You can keep WebP or another efficient format for your site’s in-page images while using a JPG or PNG specifically for og:image. The Open Graph asset is a sharing interface; it does not have to be identical to the image format used by the page.

It is a valid MIME description for a WebP resource, but the field only describes the file. It does not make a preview consumer support WebP.
Does LinkedIn’s 1200 × 627 requirement prove that other networks use the same size?

Can a browser displaying the WebP prove that a social preview will display it?
