To give Snapchat links a preview image, publish an absolute, publicly reachable og:image URL in the page’s HTML head, along with og:title. Snapchat’s URL Preview Service scans shared-page HTML and builds a card containing a title, subtitle and thumbnail. It prioritizes Open Graph tags and falls back to X/Twitter Card tags when needed.
This guide shows the metadata to add, how to generate a suitable image, what Snapchat’s crawler must be allowed to access, and how to diagnose missing or stale previews.
What Snapchat reads from your page
Snap for Developers says the URL Preview Service scans a website’s HTML when someone shares its URL in chat. The service prioritizes og:title and og:image; if those are unavailable, it can use twitter:title and twitter:img:src. Put the tags in the server-delivered <head>, not only in client-side code that appears after JavaScript runs.

</head>Use the exact canonical URL and an image URL that Snapchat can request without a login, browser interaction or expiring token. HTTPS is recommended for both URLs. The image response should have the correct content type, such as image/jpeg, image/png or image/webp.

Allow the Snapchat crawler
Snap identifies its crawler as Snap URL Preview Service; bot; snapchat; https://developers.snap.com/robots. Check robots.txt, a web-application firewall, CDN bot rules and authentication middleware. A blanket bot denial can prevent the preview even when the page works normally in your browser. If your security policy requires selective access, allow this user agent to fetch the page and the referenced image.
Choosing or generating the preview image
Use a static image when the artwork rarely changes
A static JPEG, PNG or WebP is the simplest option for a small site. Export one image per important page, give it a stable HTTPS URL, and update the file when the page’s subject changes. Keep the filename and response path stable if you want crawlers to revisit the same resource.
HCTI’s 1200 × 630 recommendation
HCTI’s Snapchat Open Graph Image Generator page recommends a 1200 × 630 landscape canvas, with the headline, logo and main subject in a central safe area. This is vendor guidance, not an official Snapchat dimension requirement: the reviewed Snap URL Preview Service documentation describes metadata and crawler behavior but does not specify a required image size. A central layout is still practical because different surfaces may scale or crop the artwork.
Generate an image per page
For sites with many articles, create the image from page data such as title, category, author or publication date. HCTI describes a workflow that places a stable image URL in og:image and uses hcti:selector metadata to identify the element to capture. It renders and reuses an image when the relevant page inputs change. That is an HCTI implementation choice, not a Snapchat prerequisite.

A generated-image pipeline should produce a completed file before publishing its URL in metadata. Avoid pointing og:image at a page that requires JavaScript to render the final artwork, because a crawler may receive HTML instead of an image.
Implementing metadata in common site setups
Static HTML
Edit each document’s head directly, or use a shared template with page variables. Confirm that the final response contains one intended og:image; multiple conflicting tags make debugging harder.
WordPress and other CMSs
Use the SEO or social-sharing settings supplied by your CMS, then inspect the rendered page source. Do not rely solely on the editor preview. If a theme or plugin emits duplicate Open Graph tags, remove the duplicate or configure one system as the owner.
Single-page applications
Prefer server-side rendering or static generation for shareable routes. If metadata is inserted only after hydration, Snapchat may read the initial shell and miss it. A prerendering layer can return route-specific head tags to bots while preserving the client application for human visitors.

A reliable verification procedure
- View the raw response. Request the shared URL with a command such as
curl -L https://example.com/articleand search the returned HTML forog:titleandog:image. Inspect the server response, not just the Elements panel after JavaScript runs. - Check the image URL directly. Open it without cookies or a login. Confirm a successful status, an image content type, a nonzero file size and no redirect to an HTML error page.
- Check access controls. Review robots.txt, firewall events, rate limits, basic authentication and geo restrictions for the Snap user agent.
- Check canonical consistency. Make sure the URL people share is the page whose metadata you edited. Redirects should end at the intended canonical page.
- Share again after caching time. Snap documents a 30-minute response cache for URLs. Snapchat may also retain its own preview cache after an image changes, so an update is not guaranteed to appear immediately.
Why a Snapchat preview is missing
The tags are absent from crawler-visible HTML
Server-side templates may omit tags on a route, or JavaScript may add them too late. Put the values in the initial HTML head and verify with a raw HTTP request.
The image cannot be fetched
Common causes include a private object-storage bucket, signed URLs that expired, hotlink protection, a 403 response, a redirect loop, an unsupported response body or a certificate error. Serve a stable public image URL and test it from a clean, unauthenticated session.
A bot rule blocks Snap
Review robots.txt and security logs for the documented Snap user agent. A rule that blocks all bots, unknown user agents or high-volume requests can stop URL Preview Service access. Adjust the narrowest rule possible rather than weakening all security controls.
The page is not the URL you edited
Tracking links, language redirects and trailing-slash variants can lead to a different document. Follow redirects and inspect the final page’s metadata. Keep og:url aligned with the canonical page.

What if the Snapchat preview does not update?
First confirm that the new HTML and image are actually being served. If both are correct, wait for Snap’s documented 30-minute URL-response cache. HCTI also cautions that Snapchat can retain its own cached preview after an image changes. Do not assume adding a random query string will force a refresh; it creates a different URL and can fragment sharing analytics. For an urgent correction, publish the corrected metadata at the canonical URL, ensure the old image is not being returned by a CDN cache, and allow time for both caching layers to expire.

Neither dynamic generation nor a particular vendor is required by Snapchat. Choose based on how often your inputs change and how much rendering infrastructure you want to operate.

Troubleshooting checklist
- Preview has text but no image: verify
og:imagespelling, absolute URL, response status and image content type. - Old image persists: confirm the new file is served, purge your own CDN cache if appropriate, then allow Snap’s 30-minute cache and any Snapchat cache to expire.
- Nothing appears: inspect raw HTML, redirects, robots rules, firewall logs and authentication requirements.
- Wrong page or artwork: check canonical redirects, duplicate tags and template variables for the exact URL being shared.
- Image is cropped awkwardly: keep essential text and logos near the center; 1200 × 630 is HCTI’s recommendation, not a Snap requirement.
FAQ
Does Snapchat require Open Graph tags?
Snap says it prioritizes og:title and og:image, while accepting the specified X/Twitter Card alternatives as fallback.
Can I use a PNG or WebP?
The documentation describes the metadata fields, not a mandatory format. Serve a valid image response and test the URL directly; JPEG, PNG and WebP are common web choices.

Will changing the filename immediately refresh a card?
No. A new URL may bypass one cache but does not guarantee an immediate Snapchat update. Validate the new metadata and allow documented and platform caching time.
