Use the built-in nearby-sharing tool when both devices support it: AirDrop between Apple devices, Quick Share between Android devices, Chromebooks and supported Windows PCs, or Windows Nearby sharing between Windows 10 and 11 PCs. For different platforms, remote recipients or discovery failures, send the image in a messaging or email app, share a cloud link, transfer it by cable, or copy it to compatible external storage.
Choose the transfer method that fits your devices
| Situation | Best first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone or iPad to Mac, iPhone or iPad | AirDrop | Fast nearby transfer without uploading the file to a third-party service. |
| Android to Android, Chromebook or supported Windows PC | Quick Share | Designed for nearby Android and compatible desktop devices. |
| Windows 10 or 11 to Windows 10 or 11 | Nearby sharing | Uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi through the Windows Share command. |
| Different ecosystems or a remote recipient | Messaging, email or cloud link | Works when devices cannot discover one another or are in different places. |
| Wireless discovery fails or an offline copy is required | USB cable or external storage | Does not depend on nearby-device discovery or an internet service. |
Nearby methods generally require the devices to be close, with wireless radios and visibility settings enabled. Cloud, email and messaging methods depend on the relevant network and service. A cable or external drive is usually the most predictable option for a large batch of images.
Send a screenshot from iPhone or iPad to a nearby Apple device
- Open Photos, or open the app that contains the screenshot.
- Open the image and tap Share.
- Tap AirDrop.
- Choose the nearby recipient. The recipient must accept the transfer.
Apple’s AirDrop recipient list is based on proximity and requires Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to be on. The recipient’s AirDrop visibility and contact settings can prevent the device from appearing. If the person is not in your contacts, have them temporarily allow receiving from a broader audience in AirDrop settings, then restore their preferred setting after the transfer.
When AirDrop is not appropriate
AirDrop is an Apple-to-Apple workflow. Do not assume an arbitrary Android phone will appear as an AirDrop destination. For an Android recipient, use a messaging app, email, cloud link, a cable or a compatible cross-platform sharing feature instead.

Send from Android to Android, Chromebook or supported Windows
- Open the screenshot in Google Photos, Gallery or the app where it is stored.
- Tap Share.
- Choose Quick Share.
- Select the nearby device or contact and complete the recipient’s acceptance step.
Google documents Quick Share for Android 6 and later, Chromebooks and select Windows PCs through the Quick Share for Windows app. On some Android 13 or later devices, clipboard content can also be shared, although a screenshot saved as an image is the more portable choice.
Make an Android or Windows device discoverable
Quick Share visibility controls determine who can find the device. Bluetooth Low Energy hardware also affects discovery when sending to Windows. On the Windows computer, install the current Quick Share for Windows app supported by that PC, turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and keep the app available while pairing. If the computer is managed by an organization, administrator policies may restrict nearby sharing.
Send between Windows PCs
- Open the screenshot in File Explorer or the Photos app.
- Use the file’s Share command.
- Choose a nearby device in the Windows sharing panel.
- Accept the transfer on the recipient PC.
Microsoft documents Nearby sharing across Windows 10 and Windows 11 using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Keep both PCs close, awake and signed in. If the recipient is elsewhere, the same sharing panel can open an installed email app with the screenshot attached; choose that route rather than waiting for a device that cannot be nearby.

Transfer screenshots between iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows
Use a messaging or email app
Attach the screenshot to a conversation or email and send it to the recipient’s account. Check the app’s image setting: some messengers offer “HD” or original-quality delivery, while a default photo mode may resize or recompress the image. Email attachment limits vary by provider, so a large batch may need a link instead.
Share a cloud link
Upload the original file to your cloud-storage service, set the link permission to the intended audience, and send the link. This preserves a single source file and avoids repeatedly attaching a large image. After the recipient downloads it, revoke public or broad access if the screenshot contains private information.
Use a cable
Apple documents connecting an iPhone to a Mac or Windows device by cable and transferring files to the computer, an external storage device, a server or the cloud. Use the cable and adapter required by the phone’s connector, unlock the phone, and approve any “Trust” or file-access prompt. On Android, select the file-transfer mode when the USB notification appears. A cable is useful when devices are not close enough for nearby sharing, wireless discovery is unreliable, or the destination must remain offline.

Use external storage
Copy the screenshot to a compatible USB-C drive, SD card or other external medium, then connect that medium to the destination device. Confirm connector, adapter, filesystem and operating-system compatibility before copying. Safely eject the storage from the source before unplugging it.
Send screenshots without losing quality
- Send the original file: choose document/file attachment or original quality instead of a compressed photo mode when the app offers both.
- Prefer PNG for text: screenshots containing small type, menus or code generally remain sharper as PNG. JPEG is smaller but introduces lossy compression.
- Do not re-screenshot: capture once at the source device’s native resolution and transfer that file; photographing a screen or taking another screenshot can reduce clarity.
- Use a cloud link or cable for large files: these avoid repeated attachment resizing and are practical for many screenshots.
- Verify after transfer: compare pixel dimensions and file size in the destination’s file information. A dramatically smaller file may have been recompressed.
Privacy and recipient control
Before sending, inspect the image for notifications, account names, addresses, tokens, QR codes or customer data. Crop or redact sensitive areas with an editor that exports a new copy; keep the untouched original private. Confirm the recipient name before accepting a nearby transfer. AirDrop, Quick Share and Windows Nearby sharing each expose controls over who may discover or accept files. For cloud links, use the narrowest permission that works and avoid “anyone with the link” when the screenshot is confidential.
Why a nearby device does not appear
- Move the devices close together. Nearby protocols are not designed for a distant recipient.
- Enable radios. Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices. Windows Nearby sharing may use either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
- Check visibility. Set AirDrop, Quick Share or Windows sharing to allow the intended recipient. Contacts-only modes can hide an otherwise valid device.
- Unlock and wake the recipient. Keep the destination screen on and ready to accept.
- Disable obstructive states. Turn off airplane mode and, if policy permits, temporarily disable a VPN or restrictive firewall.
- Retry after restarting sharing. Close and reopen the share panel, or toggle Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off and on.
- Use a fallback. Send by message, email or cloud link, or connect a cable. Do not repeatedly retry a method that the device combination does not support.
Common transfer problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient never appears | Distance, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi off, incompatible platform or restrictive visibility | Bring devices together, enable radios, adjust visibility and confirm support; then use a link or cable. |
| Transfer waits indefinitely | Recipient is locked, offline or has not accepted | Wake and unlock the destination, keep it nearby and accept the prompt. |
| Image arrives blurry | Messaging or email compression | Resend as a file/document or original quality, or use cloud storage or a cable. |
| Large batch will not send | Attachment-size or item-count limit | Upload a folder or archive to cloud storage, copy to external storage, or transfer by cable. |
| Windows Quick Share cannot discover a phone | Unsupported app/device or missing Bluetooth Low Energy hardware | Confirm the supported Windows app and hardware, enable Bluetooth, or choose email, cloud or USB. |
| Cloud recipient gets “access denied” | Link permission does not include that person | Change sharing to the recipient’s account or create a new restricted link, then revoke the old one. |

Does sending a screenshot require internet?
AirDrop, Quick Share and Windows Nearby sharing can transfer locally, and a cable or external drive can work offline. Cloud, email and messaging require the network connection and service used by the app.
Which method is safest for a confidential screenshot?
A direct nearby transfer, cable or controlled external drive limits third-party exposure. Regardless of method, remove sensitive data and verify the recipient and sharing permissions.
