The most reliable way to extract a thumbnail from a video is to save one frame with FFmpeg. For a frame at five seconds, run:
ffmpeg -ss 00:00:05 -i input.mp4 -frames:v 1 thumbnail.jpgChange the timestamp, input filename, and output filename to match your project. The command writes a single still image; -frames:v 1 is the current FFmpeg option for limiting output to one frame.
What a video thumbnail actually is
A thumbnail is a still image taken from one video frame. You can choose the exact moment, export a set of candidate frames and select one, let FFmpeg choose a representative frame, or use a browser interface when you do not want a command line. Your choice depends on how much control and batch processing you need.
Before you start
- Have the video file locally, or download it through a service that gives you permission to do so.
- Install FFmpeg and make sure the
ffmpegcommand is available in your terminal. - Know where the input file is located and where you want the image written.
- Check that you have rights to use the video and extracted image.
Extract one frame at an exact timestamp
Open a terminal in the folder containing your video and run:

ffmpeg -ss 00:00:05 -i input.mp4 -frames:v 1 thumbnail.jpg-ss sets the seek position, -i specifies the input, -frames:v 1 stops after one video frame, and the filename extension selects the output format. A timestamp can be written as HH:MM:SS, such as 00:01:27, or as a shorter value such as 12.5 seconds.
Seeking and keyframes
Putting -ss before -i is usually faster, especially for long files. The seek can land near a keyframe rather than exactly on the requested instant, so open the resulting image and adjust the timestamp if the scene is not the one you intended. For frame-perfect work, compare nearby timestamps and choose the image visually.
Use a different output name or folder
Create the destination folder first, then include its path:
ffmpeg -ss 00:00:05 -i videos/demo.mp4 -frames:v 1 thumbs/demo-005.jpgQuote paths containing spaces:

Export a frame every five seconds
Generate a contact set of candidates with:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf fps=1/5 frame%03d.jpgThis creates frame001.jpg, frame002.jpg, and so on. The %03d pattern gives each file a three-digit sequence number. To keep the output tidy, create a folder and use a path such as candidates/frame%03d.jpg.
Change 1/5 to 1/10 for one frame every ten seconds, or to 2 for two frames per second. More frequent sampling creates more files and requires more storage and review time.
Ask FFmpeg for a representative frame
When manual review is impractical, try the thumbnail filter:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf thumbnail -frames:v 1 thumbnail.jpgFFmpeg compares color and brightness histograms and selects a frame close to the average of a batch. The default batch is 100 frames, so this is a candidate picker, not a guarantee that it finds the most meaningful scene. Always inspect the result. A larger batch can sample more frames but takes additional processing.

Choose JPEG or PNG

For a high-quality JPEG, the FFmpeg guide gives -q:v 2; lower quality-number values generally mean better JPEG quality, with values from 2 through 31 described in that guidance.

ffmpeg -ss 00:00:05 -i input.mp4 -frames:v 1 -q:v 2 thumbnail.jpgDo not use an enlarged output to claim extra source detail. Upscaling changes dimensions, not the information captured by the original frame.
Resize while extracting
Use the scale video filter to make a 320-pixel-wide image while preserving its aspect ratio:
ffmpeg -ss 00:00:05 -i input.mp4 -frames:v 1 -vf scale=320:-1 thumbnail.jpgThe -1 tells FFmpeg to calculate the matching height. For a fixed maximum height instead, use scale=-1:180. Avoid specifying unrelated width and height values unless you intentionally want to stretch the image.
Combine resizing and JPEG quality
ffmpeg -ss 00:00:05 -i input.mp4 -frames:v 1 -vf scale=640:-1 -q:v 2 thumbnail.jpgPick dimensions based on where the image will be displayed. A social card, video catalog and tiny list row have different useful sizes.

Browser-based extraction
A browser frame extractor can provide a graphical path: load a video, enter or move to a timestamp, and save the displayed still. This is convenient for a one-off image when you prefer not to install or operate FFmpeg. Processing is described as local in the browser by the reviewed tool, but capabilities and limits can change. Long videos and large batches may run into browser memory constraints, so use a desktop workflow for heavier jobs.
When the browser route is a good fit
- You need one or two frames and want a visual time control.
- You cannot install command-line software on the computer you are using.
- You want to preview the frame before saving it.
When to use FFmpeg instead
- You need dozens or hundreds of thumbnails.
- You need repeatable commands in a build or publishing pipeline.
- You need exact resizing, JPEG quality, predictable filenames or scripted timestamps.

“ffmpeg is not recognized” or “command not found”
FFmpeg is not installed or its executable is not on your PATH. Install FFmpeg for your operating system, reopen the terminal, and run ffmpeg -version to verify that the shell can find it.
The output frame is not the requested scene
Fast seeking can land near a keyframe. Move the timestamp slightly, inspect several nearby stills, or use interval extraction. Keep -ss before -i when speed matters, and validate the visual result.
The image looks stretched
Your scale dimensions probably force both width and height. Use one dimension and -1, for example scale=320:-1, to preserve the source aspect ratio.
The thumbnail is too large
Resize with scale, choose JPEG instead of PNG when lossless output is unnecessary, or use a higher JPEG quality-number value to increase compression. Check the result at its actual display size.

Check that the input path is correct, the destination directory already exists, and the process has permission to write there. Paths with spaces must be quoted.
The automatic thumbnail is a poor choice
The filter selects a histogram-near-average frame from a limited sample. Use it only as a candidate, then review it manually or export regular intervals and choose a frame that communicates the video clearly.

Performance, repeatability and storage
Exact single-frame extraction is inexpensive compared with exporting a complete video, but decoding still takes time. Seeking near the start of a long file is generally quicker than scanning from the beginning to a distant timestamp; interval extraction and larger representative-frame batches require more decoding and disk space. For repeatable publishing, keep a record of the timestamp, source filename, output dimensions and format. Generate deterministic names such as episode-04-00-01-27.jpg so a later run can replace the same asset.
Review candidates at their intended display size. A frame that looks sharp at full resolution may contain unreadable text when reduced, while a slightly earlier or later frame may have a cleaner composition.

Can I extract a thumbnail without extracting the whole video?
Yes. FFmpeg decodes the material needed to reach the requested frame and writes only the selected still when you use -frames:v 1.
Is -vframes 1 still valid?
It is an obsolete alias. Use -frames:v 1 in new commands.
What timestamp should I use for a thumbnail?
Choose a frame that is sharp, representative and readable at the final display size. If you do not know where that occurs, export candidates at intervals and compare them.
Can a thumbnail show transparency?
PNG is the lossless choice when preserving transparency matters, but the source frame and chosen pixel format must also contain an alpha channel; ordinary video frames commonly do not.
