If that saves a thumbnail, open the image in a new tab or use Developer Tools to copy the file URL from src, srcset, CSS, or the browser’s Network panel. The method depends on whether the page uses a normal image, responsive variants, lazy loading, a CSS background, or a canvas.
Start with Save Image As
On a desktop browser, move the pointer over the image, open its context menu, and select Save Image As. Google Chrome Help describes this as “Images: Right-click on the image and choose Save Image As.” Choose a folder and confirm the filename. If you do not choose a location, the browser normally uses its default download folder.
- Open the page containing the image.
- Right-click (or Control-click on macOS) the image.
- Choose Save Image As or the equivalent command in your browser.
- Select a destination, keep the offered extension unless you have a reason to change it, and save.
This retrieves the image response that the page exposes to the browser. It may be a thumbnail, a compressed WebP or AVIF file, or a resized CDN variant rather than the largest original.
Open the image itself before saving
Many pages wrap an image in a link. Right-click the image and choose Open image in new tab (the wording varies by browser), then save from that tab. You can also open the link in a new tab and inspect the address bar. If the URL points directly to a file, the browser may display it instead of forcing a download; saving from the image tab still stores the response locally.

This step is useful when a gallery places a transparent link over the picture or when the page’s context menu belongs to a surrounding card rather than the image element.
Find the source URL with Developer Tools
When ordinary saving produces a small preview or the page disables the context menu, inspect the element that displays the image.
- Open Developer Tools. In Chrome and Edge, press F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux); on macOS use Option+Command+I. Firefox uses the same common shortcuts.
- Choose the element picker (usually a cursor-in-a-box icon).
- Click the image on the page.
- In the Elements or Inspector panel, look for an
<img>element and itssrcorsrcsetattribute. Cloudflare’s documentation summarizes the check as: “Look for the URL in the src attribute of the video or image.” - Copy the URL, paste it into a new tab, and save the response there.
Do not assume that a filename containing words such as thumb or small can be made original by deleting a query parameter. CDN transformations differ. Use the URL the site actually serves, and verify the result by opening it at its natural dimensions.

sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px">Copy the candidate with the largest width that the site actually serves, then open it directly. A browser may select a smaller candidate because of the current viewport, zoom level, or device-pixel ratio. If a candidate returns an error, use the largest working response rather than guessing a filename.

Capture lazy-loaded and JavaScript-created images from Network
An image may not appear in the initial HTML at all. Lazy loading can request it only after you scroll; a gallery may request each image after a click; JavaScript may construct the URL at runtime. The Network panel records those requests.
- Open Developer Tools and select Network.
- Reload the page while the panel is open. If the panel has a recording button, ensure recording is enabled.
- Filter by Img or search for an extension such as
.jpg,.png,.webp, or.avif. - Scroll until the target appears, open the gallery slide, or trigger the control that loads it.
- Select the matching request and use Open in new tab, Copy URL, or the request’s save command.
Scrapy’s documentation recommends browser network tools for non-text resources and inspecting page source when the desired data is absent from the initial response. The request URL is often more reliable than a URL copied from a placeholder element.
If several requests look similar, compare their dimensions, response preview, and timing. The request made after the target becomes visible is usually the relevant one. Preserve required query parameters; they can select a size, signed access token, or image transformation.
Extract images that are not ordinary img elements
CSS background images
Hero artwork, icons, and decorative photos are sometimes applied with CSS rather than an <img>. Select the element, switch to Computed styles, and find background-image or background containing url(...). Copy the URL inside the function, open it, and save it. Multiple backgrounds may be listed; inspect each layer and identify the one visible behind the content.
Canvas-rendered images
A canvas can contain pixels without exposing a standalone image URL. Use the page’s own export or download control when one exists. If there is no export control, you may capture the rendered result only when you have permission to do so. A canvas screenshot is a rendering of what is visible, not proof that an original source file is publicly available.

What to do when right-click is disabled
A disabled context menu changes the interface, not the browser’s ability to inspect resources. Use the element picker and Network workflow above. You can also use View Page Source for images present in the original HTML, although source view will not reveal resources inserted later by JavaScript.
Do not treat these techniques as a way to defeat authentication, a paywall, a bot check, or another access control. If the browser cannot legitimately load the resource, do not try to bypass that control.
Why the download attribute sometimes fails
Web developers can add download to a link to suggest that a file be downloaded instead of opened. MDN documents an important limitation: the attribute works for same-origin URLs and for blob: or data: URLs. A cross-origin link may open in the browser rather than download, regardless of the attribute. In that case, use the image tab’s save command if the response is accessible, or ask the site owner for a downloadable copy.

Check permission before reusing the file
Saving a copy for personal reference is different from publishing, selling, or redistributing it. Before reuse, check the image license, attribution requirements, the site’s terms, and any paywall or access conditions. A technically accessible URL does not automatically grant reuse rights.
robots.txt is also not a license. RFC 9309 states that crawler rules “are not a form of access authorization.” Google Search Central explains that robots.txt can manage whether image URLs are crawled, while images still need to remain crawlable for Googlebot to read a noindex rule. Follow the owner’s permission and licensing terms even when a crawler is allowed to fetch the file.
