Use a browser’s screenshot feature to capture a web page as it is actually rendered. For automated captures, Playwright’s page.screenshot() is a straightforward option: it can save a viewport or full-page image, crop to a region, and return image data without redrawing the DOM into a canvas. If you need a Chromium-specific lower-level interface, use the Chrome DevTools Protocol’s Page.captureScreenshot.
This distinction matters because html2canvas reconstructs a representation from DOM and style information; it does not take a literal screenshot of the browser’s rendered page. That reconstruction can differ from what a visitor sees.
What “without canvas” means
A browser screenshot captures the pixels produced by the browser’s rendering process. A DOM-to-canvas library instead reads page elements and styles, then draws a best-effort representation. The html2canvas documentation explicitly describes that approach and warns that output may not fully match the actual page appearance.
Choose a browser screenshot when you need the rendered result—for example, a repeatable capture for a report, a visual record, or an image of a page whose CSS or embedded content is difficult to reconstruct. Choose DOM reconstruction only when you specifically need its canvas-oriented workflow and can accept its rendering and cross-origin constraints.

For extension APIs, the html2canvas FAQ points to chrome.tabs.captureVisibleTab() for Chrome, Edge, and Opera, and browser.tabs.captureVisibleTab() for Firefox. Check the relevant browser vendor’s current API and permission documentation before implementing an extension: the methods cited here are for the visible tab, not a guarantee of full-page capture.
Capture a page with Playwright
Playwright is a practical starting point if your code can launch and control a browser. The example below opens a page and saves the full scrollable page as a PNG. It illustrates the documented API shape; it is not a claim that a capture was performed.

The Playwright Page API documents page.screenshot() as returning a buffer and supporting a path, full-page captures, clipping, and PNG, JPEG, or WebP output. Its current documentation also describes scaling, animation handling, and masking locators. Browser APIs change, so consult the live API reference for exact option names and behavior for your installed Playwright version.

Capture only the visible viewport
Omit fullPage to capture the current viewport:

Use the documented clip option to capture a rectangle in page coordinates. For example:

Choose format and scaling
Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshot output. The file extension alone is not a substitute for setting and checking the appropriate screenshot options. The API documents a scale setting for CSS-pixel sizing or device-pixel sizing; its current documented default is device. Select based on whether you want output dimensions tied to CSS pixels or the device scale factor, and verify the setting against the version in use.
Control motion and mask changing content
For repeatable captures, animations or frequently changing regions can make otherwise identical screenshots differ. Playwright documents animation control and masking locators in its screenshot API. Use those options when appropriate, and avoid hiding or masking content if the purpose is to record exactly what a visitor sees.

Capture a screenshot through the Chromium DevTools Protocol
If your application already speaks the Chrome DevTools Protocol, its Page domain lists Page.captureScreenshot. This is a lower-level route than Playwright’s page API: your code must manage the protocol session and browser lifecycle appropriate to its environment.
The protocol reference is a rolling tot schema. Check the live schema and the Chromium version you target before relying on particular parameters or behavior. Use this option when protocol-level control is useful, rather than adding a protocol layer to a task that Playwright already handles directly.

Why html2canvas can produce a different result
The project documentation says html2canvas traverses the DOM and builds a representation from properties it reads. It can render only the CSS properties it understands, so unsupported or incomplete CSS handling may change the result. It also documents same-origin restrictions for images and inaccessible cross-origin iframes.
The FAQ explains that drawing cross-origin images can taint a canvas, and that unsupported CSS can render incorrectly. It also warns that oversized canvases may produce blank or partial output without an error. The FAQ’s listed browser canvas limits do not show a publication year, so treat them as implementation guidance to verify for the browsers you support—not as current, universal capacity figures.
These are not problems that a browser screenshot solves by making the page’s content accessible: the browser still has to load and render the page. But it avoids reconstructing that rendering through a separate DOM-to-canvas pass.

Troubleshoot common capture failures
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
- Check navigation and page readiness. Confirm that navigation completed and the intended page loaded before calling the screenshot method. A page may still need application-specific readiness checks after the load event.
- Check full-page dimensions and dynamic content. A page that grows as images or content load may need a deliberate wait or a readiness condition before capture. Playwright supports waiting for selectors and other page interactions; choose a condition tied to the content you need rather than assuming a fixed delay always works.
- For html2canvas, check canvas size and rendering support. Its FAQ notes that oversized canvases can yield blank or partial output and that CSS support is incomplete.
Images or frames are missing in html2canvas output
Check whether the image or iframe is cross-origin and whether the required access is available. The html2canvas documentation describes same-origin restrictions and inaccessible cross-origin iframes; the FAQ explains the canvas tainting issue. A browser screenshot captures what the browser rendered, but it does not grant access to content the page itself cannot load.
The script fails before it can capture
- Node.js with html2canvas: The FAQ says html2canvas depends on browser APIs such as
window,document, and computed styles, so it cannot run directly in Node.js. For server-side screenshot generation, it points to headless browser automation with Puppeteer or Playwright. - Playwright browser launch: Make sure the browser binaries required by your installation are installed and that the runtime can launch the selected browser. Consult the current Playwright installation and troubleshooting documentation for the specific launch error.
- Chromium protocol mismatch: The DevTools Protocol is version-sensitive. Check the live protocol schema and your browser version when a command or parameter is unavailable.
The capture differs between runs
Standardize the viewport, wait for the page content that matters, and consider animation control or masking for dynamic elements. Differences may also come from page content changing between visits; do not treat a screenshot comparison as evidence of a browser regression until you have controlled the page state.

A browser-driven screenshot requires a browser to load and render the page, so the work includes navigation and rendering rather than only drawing an already available DOM snapshot. The reviewed documentation does not establish a comparative speed benchmark for Playwright, Puppeteer, CDP, or html2canvas; choose based on fidelity, environment, control, and operational needs rather than an unsupported speed ranking.
For recurring server-side jobs, account for browser processes, navigation failures, timeouts, and page variability in your own workflow. Reuse or isolate browser resources according to your application’s requirements, set timeouts deliberately, and record failures separately from successful captures. No general cost figure applies to self-hosted automation: it depends on where and how you run the browser.
