For most developers, Playwright MCP is the best place to start for local browser automation and testing. Choose Browserbase MCP when you need hosted browsers and managed remote execution, Firecrawl MCP for web search and structured extraction, and Figma MCP for design-to-code work. The other servers in this list fill project, repository, file, and database context needs rather than replacing a browser-automation tool.
There is no comparable public evidence here for ranking these servers by adoption, speed, success rate, or cost. The order below is a practical guide by use case, not a performance league table.
How to choose an MCP server for web development
MCP servers connect an AI client to tools and context. For web work, the important distinction is what the server actually gives the agent: control of a browser, access to web content, design context, deployment operations, or project data. Those are related needs, but they are not interchangeable.
| Need | Best starting point | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Local browser interaction and testing | Playwright MCP | Provides browser automation using Playwright, including structured page interaction. |
| Remote, managed browser execution | Browserbase MCP | Provides hosted headless browsers for navigation, interaction, extraction, and screenshots. |
| Search, crawling, and structured web data | Firecrawl MCP | Its focus is web discovery and content acquisition rather than end-to-end UI testing. |
| Design context in implementation | Figma MCP Server | Brings design information into code-generation workflows and can write native content back to Figma. |
| Deployment work in Vercel | Vercel MCP | Connects agents to Vercel projects and deployment workflows. |
Before choosing, check whether you need local or hosted execution, browser control or retrieved content, and deterministic selectors or accessibility-oriented interaction. Then verify the current client compatibility, transport, authentication, permissions, rate limits, and vendor terms in the relevant project documentation. Those details can change; the server names alone do not establish that a particular client or deployment configuration is supported.

Top 10 MCP servers for web development and browser automation
1. Playwright MCP: best default for local browser automation
Microsoft describes Playwright MCP as an MCP server that provides browser automation capabilities using Playwright. Playwright documentation highlights structured accessibility snapshots, which give an agent a representation of page content and controls to work with rather than requiring it to rely only on a visual screenshot.
Use it when a developer machine should own the browser state and the task involves interacting with a site or testing a UI. It is the strongest general starting point in this list for local browser automation and testing. For production use, confirm the supported MCP client, authentication approach, and available transport in the current Playwright documentation; the material available here does not establish a universal setup recipe.
2. Browserbase MCP: best for hosted browsers
Browserbase MCP is the cloud-oriented choice when a team needs remote browser execution, managed infrastructure, or scaling beyond a single developer’s local browser. Browserbase documents navigation, interaction, extraction, and screenshots through hosted headless browsers.
Choose it when browser operations need to run remotely or when hosted execution is more suitable than keeping browser state on a workstation. Its trade-off is that execution depends on a hosted service and its operating terms. Confirm how your intended workflow handles authentication, concurrency, and data access before sending real user or production data through it.

3. Puppeteer MCP: useful for teams already using Puppeteer
Puppeteer MCP is a reasonable fit when the team already uses Puppeteer or wants a browser-automation and web-scraping server in that ecosystem. Browserbase’s server collection lists Puppeteer for browser automation and web scraping.
It is not the default recommendation over Playwright MCP for every project; the useful selection criterion here is an existing Puppeteer workflow or a specific compatibility requirement. The available evidence does not establish comparative reliability, feature parity, or performance between the two. Check the current repository and client instructions before adopting it.

- Wide operating temperature range of -40 to 75°C (-40 to 167°F)
4. Firecrawl MCP: best for search, crawling, and structured extraction
Firecrawl is aimed at agents that need to find and collect web information: search, crawl, map sites, retrieve full pages, and extract structured data. Its listed capabilities also include interaction, deep research, retries, and rate limiting, with cloud and self-hosted support described in its registry listing.
That makes it a better fit for content acquisition and research agents than for testing a website’s full UI behavior. If the task requires reliable interaction with buttons, forms, or app flows, pair a retrieval tool with a browser-control server rather than treating crawling as equivalent to browser testing. For a web-data task, validate the extraction format and the relevant rate limits before scaling it.

5. Figma MCP Server: best for design-to-code workflows
Figma’s MCP server exposes design information to AI agents working from Figma files. Figma documents extracting variables, components, and layout data; generating code from selected frames; and writing native content back to the canvas.
Use it when an implementation needs design-system context rather than a browser session. It can help connect selected design work to code generation, but it does not replace running the result in a browser or validating the UI there. Select a supported MCP client and follow Figma’s current documentation for access and permissions.
6. Vercel MCP: best for Vercel project and deployment workflows
Vercel calls Vercel MCP its official MCP server for interacting with Vercel projects. It belongs in a workflow where an agent needs deployment-oriented context or operations for a Vercel-hosted web project, rather than general-purpose browser automation.
Vercel’s cited documentation page is dated January 30, 2026. Confirm the current capabilities and authorization requirements in Vercel’s documentation before enabling it against a live project. The fact that a server is official does not by itself define what actions an individual client session is permitted to perform.

7. GitHub MCP Server: best for repository and collaboration context
GitHub MCP Server is a fit for repository context and code-hosting operations, including issues and pull requests. It complements browser automation: it gives an agent a way to work with the development project, while a browser server addresses interaction with a running site.
Use it when the task spans code and repository collaboration, and scope permissions to what the agent needs. It is not a browser replacement, and the available description does not specify a universal permission set or deployment transport.
8. Fetch MCP Server: best for retrieving web content into agent context
Fetch MCP Server appears in the reference server collection as a way to retrieve and convert web content into material an agent can use. That is useful when the job is to bring page content into a reasoning workflow without needing the full set of browser interactions expected in UI automation.
Distinguish retrieval from crawling and from browser control when planning a stack. The listed description does not establish broad site coverage, extraction guarantees, or interaction features, so check current documentation against the content and access requirements of your task.
9. Filesystem MCP Server: best for controlled local file operations
Filesystem MCP Server supports secure local file operations, making it a development-workflow complement when an agent needs access to project files. It can supply local context that a browser or web retrieval server cannot.
Keep access deliberate: determine which directories the client can reach and whether the intended work requires read-only or write access. The server collection describes secure file operations, but the exact controls depend on the current implementation and configuration; verify them before exposing sensitive files.

10. PostgreSQL MCP Server: best for database schema and read-only context
PostgreSQL MCP Server is relevant when a web application task requires database schema inspection or read-only database access from an agent. It is infrastructure context, not a way to automate a browser or scrape a website.
For a first deployment, prefer the least access necessary for the task and verify whether the actual configuration is read-only. The available listing names schema inspection and read-only access as use cases but does not establish a particular server’s security guarantees or permission defaults.

Most projects do not need all ten servers connected at once. Select the capabilities that match the work:
- Test or inspect a local web UI: begin with Playwright MCP.
- Run browser work remotely: consider Browserbase MCP.
- Collect and structure site content: use Firecrawl MCP; use Fetch when the need is retrieval and conversion into agent-readable context.
- Translate a design into implementation: add Figma MCP for design context, then use a browser workflow to inspect the result.
- Work across code and deployment: GitHub MCP and Vercel MCP address repository and Vercel-project needs, respectively.
- Bring in local or database context: consider Filesystem or PostgreSQL MCP only when the task requires those resources.
More connected tools mean more credentials, permissions, and possible actions for a client to manage. Use the narrowest useful set, test it with non-sensitive data, and review tool permissions before moving from a development environment to a production workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Setup, reliability, performance, and cost checks
MCP server instructions vary by implementation and client, so there is no single installation command or configuration block that applies to all ten. Use each project’s current setup documentation rather than copying an unverified client configuration. Confirm that the client supports the server’s current transport, that credentials are available to the process that runs it, and that the permissions match the intended task.
No authoritative comparable latency, success-rate, adoption, or cost figures are established for these ten servers. Local versus hosted execution is an architectural choice, not a published speed ranking: browser work may depend on the target site, network, authentication state, and the selected server’s execution environment. For reliability, test representative pages and failure cases, and check how the server reports errors, timeouts, and rate limits before depending on it in automation.

Troubleshoot common MCP server problems
The client does not connect to the server
Check the current client and server setup instructions together. A mismatch in supported transport or an invalid process/configuration entry can prevent connection. Confirm the configured executable or endpoint, environment variables, and client logs; do not assume that a server supports every transport.
The server connects but a tool is missing or unavailable
Check which capabilities the server actually documents and whether the current client exposes them. For example, a retrieval server is not automatically a browser-control server, and a repository server is not a deployment or database tool. Update the client or server only according to its current compatibility instructions.
A page or protected resource cannot be accessed
Verify the authentication path, account permissions, and access policy for the specific site or project. Hosted and local execution may not share the same browser state. Avoid broadening permissions until you know which credential and resource the request needs.
Results are incomplete, slow, or rate-limited
First classify the task: interactive UI work belongs with a browser server; broad content acquisition belongs with a crawling or retrieval server. Then inspect the target, current vendor limits, and server-reported errors. Reduce request volume or narrow the scope where appropriate, and test the workflow on representative pages before scaling it.

If the specific job is to capture clean website screenshots or PDFs rather than control a full browser session, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers, with the MCP tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. It is a focused alternative, not a replacement for Playwright’s general browser interaction, Firecrawl’s crawling, or the project-context servers above.
ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For a minimal cURL capture, replace the example URL with your target and supply your API key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and response details. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its other options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, wait conditions, request blocking, custom headers and cookies, geolocation and timezone, PDF settings, caching, signed links, async jobs, bulk capture, and a usage API.
