A Threads Open Graph image generator helps you create or inspect the image and metadata that a shared page exposes. The reliable implementation is an ordinary Open Graph document: publish an accessible image URL in og:image, add the relevant image properties, and verify the tags in your live HTML. There is no first-party Threads specification in the available Meta material that makes 1200 × 630 pixels an official requirement. That size is a sensible general recommendation from third-party guides, not a Threads contract.

What a Threads Open Graph image generator actually does

The phrase combines two jobs that are easy to confuse:

  • Generation: creating a share-card graphic, usually by uploading an image, cropping it, or composing text and branding.
  • Inspection: fetching a page URL, reading its Open Graph tags, and showing the image and metadata that a social platform could use.

A generator can export an image and copy HTML tags, but it cannot force Threads to render a particular crop or immediately discard a cached preview. Rendering and caching remain platform behavior.

OpenGraph Studio describes itself as a free, open-source generator, cropper, and social-card preview tool with upload and URL-inspection workflows. That makes it an example of the tool category, not an independently tested recommendation.

What the standards and Meta documentation establish

Open Graph defines the metadata fields

The Open Graph protocol describes a page for sharing. The og:image property identifies an image, while structured properties can provide its URL, secure URL, media type, width, height, and alternative text.

Alternative text describes what is in the image; it is not a caption for the post. Keep it concise and useful to someone who cannot see the graphic.

Threads uses a link in the post

Meta’s Threads API material says that when you do not supply a link-attachment parameter, Threads uses the first URL in the post text as the link preview. This explains why a post containing several URLs can produce an unexpected card: the first URL is the one selected by that documented behavior.

The launch announcement does not specify a card size

Meta’s July 5, 2023 launch announcement, updated June 25, 2024, says Threads posts can include links, photos, and videos. It does not prescribe an Open Graph image dimension, accepted preview format, crawler rule, or cache-refresh procedure. Do not present an image size as an official Threads requirement on the basis of that announcement.

Which image dimensions should you prepare?

Claim What it means for your implementation
1200 × 630 pixels A third-party Open Graph platform guide recommends at least this size for Facebook/Meta previews, and a Threads-focused guide repeats it. Treat it as a general starting recommendation, not a verified Threads rule.
Other dimensions No first-party Threads dimension is established by the cited Meta material. Test your design at the actual card appearance and keep important text away from edges.
Format and file limits The available sources do not establish official Threads-specific format, file-size, or URL thresholds. Do not turn third-party checklists into Meta requirements.

For a practical first version, create a 1200 × 630 image in PNG, JPEG, or WebP, then expose the matching URL and dimensions in your tags. The protocol’s type field lets you identify the media type; it does not make that format a Threads guarantee.

Build the metadata yourself

You do not need a special Threads endpoint to publish Open Graph data. Put the tags in the <head> of the page whose URL you will share:

<meta property='og:image' content='https://example.com/share-image.png'>
<meta property='og:image:width' content='1200'>
<meta property='og:image:height' content='630'>
<meta property='og:image:alt' content='A concise description of the share image'>

The 1200 × 630 values in this illustrative example follow the general recommendation above; they are not an official Threads setting. Replace the image URL, dimensions, and description with your real asset.

  1. Create the asset. Use a readable headline, strong contrast, and a composition that still works when a platform crops it.
  2. Publish it at a stable URL. Use the final HTTPS URL in og:image. If the URL changes, update the page tag and any cache or CDN rule serving the old asset.
  3. Add the structured properties. Width, height, type, secure URL, and alt text are optional Open Graph image properties that make the declaration more explicit.
  4. Inspect the live response. View the deployed HTML, not only a local template or a client-side value that appears after JavaScript runs. Confirm that the tag points to the intended image.
  5. Share the canonical page URL. In a Threads post, put the URL you want previewed first unless you intentionally provide the documented link-attachment parameter.

Using a generator or preview tool

A useful workflow separates visual design from metadata verification:

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Upload or compose the card in the generator and export the image at your chosen dimensions.
  2. Open the generator’s URL-inspection mode with the public page URL.
  3. Check the resolved og:image, title, description, URL, dimensions, and alt text against the page you intend to share.
  4. Copy the generated tags into the server-rendered document and deploy.
  5. Inspect the deployed URL again after deployment. A preview of an unpublished local file cannot tell you whether a remote fetch will succeed.

OpenGraphImage’s platform guide is useful background on how services read metadata. Its 1200 × 630 recommendation should still be labeled as a third-party recommendation when you document your own requirements.

Fixing a Threads preview that shows the wrong image

1. The page points to a different image

Inspect the raw HTML returned for the shared URL and search for property='og:image'. Check for an old template, a staging hostname, a relative URL, or a typo in the filename. Correct the deployed tag, then verify the response again.

2. Threads selected another URL

If the post contains multiple links and no explicit link-attachment parameter, the first URL in the text is the documented selection. Move the intended page URL to the first position or use the attachment parameter supported by your integration.

3. The image cannot be fetched

Confirm that the image URL is publicly reachable and returns the image rather than an HTML error page, login screen, or redirect loop. Meta’s Threads API material explicitly requires a publicly hosted URL when you submit an image as media. That statement concerns media posting, not a complete specification for fetching og:image from a linked page, so use it as a practical accessibility check rather than proof of every preview rule.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

4. The card is cached

A generator can show what your tags currently say, but it cannot guarantee when Threads will refresh a previously fetched card. Change the asset URL when you need an unambiguous new object, keep the page’s metadata consistent, and test a newly shared URL separately from an old post.

5. The design is cropped or unreadable

Dimensions do not guarantee a particular Threads crop. Keep logos and essential words inside a generous safe area, avoid tiny type, and check the composition at a reduced preview size. Treat 1200 × 630 as a starting canvas, not a promise about the final card frame.

6. You edited tags only in browser JavaScript

Some inspection tools read the initial HTTP response instead of executing your application. Render the Open Graph tags in the server response or static HTML, then inspect that response directly.

Operational checklist for reliable previews

  • Use one final, absolute image URL in og:image.
  • Keep width and height values synchronized with the actual file.
  • Write alt text that describes the image rather than repeating a marketing caption.
  • Place the intended page URL first in a Threads post when relying on automatic link selection.
  • Verify the deployed HTML and image response from outside your local network.
  • Record the image URL used for each campaign so a later cache investigation has a clear reference.
  • Recheck platform behavior when you change templates or when Meta updates its documentation; the cited launch material does not define cache invalidation or a fixed card size.

FAQ

Does an Open Graph generator submit a post to Threads?

No. It creates or inspects an image and the page’s metadata. Posting and link attachment are separate Threads API or app actions.

Can I call 1200 × 630 an official Threads requirement?

No. The available first-party Meta material does not make that claim. Describe it as a general recommendation from third-party Open Graph guides.

Is a publicly hosted image URL proof that every linked-page preview will work?

No. The public-URL statement in Meta’s API material applies to submitting an image as media. It is not a complete specification for how Threads fetches every page’s og:image.

The Bottom Line

Use Open Graph tags with a stable, publicly reachable image and treat 1200 × 630 as a third-party starting recommendation, not an official Threads size. Verify the deployed HTML, ensure the intended link is first in the post when relying on automatic selection, and expect platform caching and rendering to remain outside the generator’s control.
