The official route is Chrome DevTools MCP: an MCP server that lets a trusted AI client control and inspect Chrome, including taking screenshots. Install Node.js LTS, npm, and current stable Chrome, register chrome-devtools-mcp with your MCP client, then ask the client to navigate and capture the page. At the protocol level, the screenshot operation is Chrome DevTools Protocol’s Page.captureScreenshot.
What Chrome DevTools MCP does
MCP is the integration layer between an AI client and tools. Chrome DevTools MCP starts a local server that exposes browser actions and inspection to an MCP-compatible client such as Codex, Claude, Cursor, or another client that supports MCP. Chrome itself performs the work through the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP).
The CDP Page.captureScreenshot command accepts a format and, when needed, a clip region. The exact tool names and arguments exposed by MCP can change, so use the current tool reference in the Chrome DevTools MCP project for your installed version. Do not assume that a particular client or release provides full-page capture unless its current documentation says so.
Prerequisites and safety
- Node.js LTS and npm. The official Chrome guide lists Node.js LTS as the prerequisite for the server.
- Google Chrome or Chrome for Testing. These are the officially supported browsers. Other Chromium browsers are not guaranteed.
- An MCP client. Its registration syntax and UI vary by product.
Connecting this server gives an agent access to browser content and, depending on the tools it uses, the ability to read, inspect, debug, and modify data. Chrome’s guide warns: “Chrome DevTools for agents exposes your browser content to your agent. This allows your agent to read, inspect, debug, and modify any data in the browser or DevTools.” Use a clean or isolated profile for public pages, do not leave passwords or private tabs open, and connect only an agent you trust. The project also advises using trusted web content or having the client defend against prompt injection.

Install and register Chrome DevTools MCP
1. Verify Node.js and Chrome
node --version
npm --version
Install the current Node.js LTS release if either command is missing, then install or update Google Chrome (or Chrome for Testing).
2. Add the server to your MCP client
The generic configuration starts the package with npx:
{
"mcpServers": {
"chrome-devtools": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "chrome-devtools-mcp@latest"]
}
}
}
For Codex, the official setup example is:
codex mcp add chrome-devtools -- npx chrome-devtools-mcp@latest
Client commands can change, so follow the client-specific instructions in the Chrome DevTools for agents guide if your client rejects this syntax. Using @latest gets the package version resolved by npm at startup; pin a tested version instead when you need repeatable builds.
3. Start a tool call
Connecting to the server does not necessarily launch Chrome. The project notes that the browser starts when the client invokes a tool that requires it. In your client, ask it to open the target URL, wait for the page to be ready, and take a screenshot. The client should expose the available screenshot tool and its current arguments after the server connects.
Make captures reproducible
Choose browser mode and viewport
Use headless mode for unattended jobs; use a visible browser when you need to watch navigation or diagnose a page. Set the initial viewport explicitly so responsive layouts do not change between runs. A 1440×900 viewport, for example, may produce a desktop layout while 390×844 produces a mobile layout. Treat those dimensions as your chosen test conditions, not a universal default.

Choose an image format
| Format | Use it when | Important setting |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | You need lossless text, UI, or pixel comparison. | Quality is ignored. |
| JPEG | You need a smaller photographic image. | Set a quality value supported by your client. |
| WebP | You want modern compression and broad web delivery. | Set quality when the tool exposes it. |
The current configuration documentation says JPEG and WebP are approximately 3–5 times smaller than PNG. That is the project’s approximate guidance, not a benchmark for every page. The configuration also supports maximum dimensions that downscale output; use them when a downstream system has a size limit.
Full page versus a region
CDP’s Page.captureScreenshot supports a clip rectangle for a defined region. A viewport screenshot captures what is visible in the browser. Full-page behavior depends on the MCP release and its tool implementation, so check the live tool reference before building a workflow around it. If a page uses lazy-loaded images, make sure the page has scrolled or otherwise loaded the content before capture.
Reduce the tool surface when appropriate
The project provides a --slim mode exposing navigation, script execution, and screenshots for basic browser tasks. A smaller surface can be easier to govern than every inspection and debugging capability.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Pick a profile deliberately
The configuration includes an isolated temporary user-data directory option. An isolated profile reduces accidental access to your normal cookies and tabs but removes your existing login state. A persistent profile preserves state but increases the data an agent can reach. Choose based on whether the target page is public and whether authentication is genuinely required.
Usage statistics and network guardrails
Usage statistics are enabled by default. Disable them with --no-usage-statistics. Collection is also disabled when CHROME_DEVTOOLS_MCP_NO_USAGE_STATISTICS or CI is set.
Allowed-URL and blocked-URL patterns can limit destinations, but the security document says they are not a complete network sandbox. For a hard boundary, run the client and browser inside a separate operating-system sandbox or virtual machine. Keep credentials out of the session whenever possible.
A practical capture workflow
- Open a clean or intentionally authenticated Chrome profile.
- Start your MCP client with the registered
chrome-devtoolsserver. - Ask the client to navigate to the exact URL, including any required path.
- Set headless/visible mode and the viewport required by your test.
- Wait for a meaningful readiness condition, such as a selector or network idle, rather than relying only on a fixed short delay.
- Request the screenshot tool with PNG, JPEG, or WebP and the required quality or clip options.
- Save the returned bytes and record the URL, viewport, format, and timestamp alongside the file.
For a protocol-level implementation, consult the Page domain reference. For MCP flags and current option names, consult the MCP configuration guide.
Troubleshooting
The client cannot start the server
Confirm that node, npm, and npx are on the client’s PATH. Run npx -y chrome-devtools-mcp@latest in a terminal to expose an installation or permission error, then fix that error and reconnect the client.
Chrome never opens
A server connection alone may not start Chrome. Invoke a browser tool that requires it. If it still fails, verify that a supported Chrome installation is available and that your client is not overriding the executable path.
The screenshot has the wrong layout
Set the initial viewport explicitly and check whether headless mode changes available window dimensions. Also wait for fonts, responsive navigation, and lazy content to finish loading.
Rank #4
The image is unexpectedly large
Use JPEG or WebP with an appropriate quality value, or set maximum dimensions. PNG is lossless and may be substantially larger; the project’s documentation estimates JPEG/WebP at roughly 3–5 times smaller in typical comparisons.
A page is blank or incomplete
Check navigation errors, wait for a selector or network idle, and determine whether the site requires authentication, blocks automation, or renders content only after scrolling. Do not treat a successful tool response as proof that every resource loaded.
An agent reaches sensitive content
Stop the session, close the authenticated profile, and restart with an isolated temporary user-data directory. Add URL allow/deny patterns for additional guidance, but use an OS or VM sandbox when you need a true network boundary.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
One HTTP request is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters, formats, and MCP setup. The same request in Python:

r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Best Value
Chrome DevTools MCP or ScreenshotNeo?
| Need | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect, debug, or interact with a live Chrome session | Chrome DevTools MCP | It exposes browser control and DevTools inspection to an MCP client. |
| A clean screenshot API without local browser setup | ScreenshotNeo | Consent UI and common overlays are removed before capture, and failed or blocked pages are not billed. |
| AI-agent screenshot tools with an HTTP fallback | ScreenshotNeo | It provides an MCP server plus a single GET endpoint. |
Use Chrome DevTools MCP when the browser session itself is the subject of the task. Use ScreenshotNeo when you need repeatable URL-to-image calls, clean output, and usage-based billing that distinguishes successful captures from failures.
