The available API reference documents those operations, but it does not establish a current end-to-end setup, comparison algorithm, supported-framework matrix, or pricing. This guide separates what LambdaTest documents from practical advice for building a reliable comparison process.
What is LambdaTest visual regression testing?
Visual regression testing checks whether a page’s rendered appearance has changed between a reference image and a later image. Instead of relying only on DOM assertions or functional tests, a team compares screenshots to spot changes such as shifted content, missing elements, altered typography, or unexpected colors. A difference is a signal to review, not automatic proof that a change is a defect: some visual changes are intentional.
LambdaTest presents visual regression testing as screenshot comparison across browser-rendered pages. SmartUI’s API documentation describes uploading locally captured images for visual regression testing and provides operations for checking build status and retrieving screenshots. Taken together, those capabilities support a practical loop of capture or upload, check the build, retrieve images, and inspect deviations. The documentation available for this guide is not a complete, current integration tutorial, so exact endpoint paths, authentication, payload formats, and setup steps should be taken from the live SmartUI documentation rather than inferred.
It helps to distinguish three parts of the process:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Capture: render the same page or state and save an image for each run or browser context.
- Comparison: assess the new image against a baseline or other reference image to find visual differences.
- Review: decide whether each difference is an intended product change, an environmental variation, or a regression that needs fixing.
The reviewed material establishes screenshot uploads and build-status and screenshot-retrieval operations, but it does not specify SmartUI’s current comparison algorithm, thresholds, masking controls, or approval behavior. Do not assume those implementation details without checking current product documentation.
How do I compare screenshots with LambdaTest SmartUI?
At a high level, a SmartUI workflow needs a reference image and a later image captured under comparable conditions. The API reference supports uploading locally captured images and working with builds and screenshots. It does not provide enough current setup detail here to responsibly prescribe particular endpoint URLs, request fields, SDK commands, or CI configuration. Use the live API reference for those values and confirm that its authentication and version guidance apply to your account.
1. Choose the page state you want to protect
Start with a specific route and meaningful state, not just a site homepage. For example, a product team might protect a logged-in account summary after its key data has loaded. Record the steps or test fixture that produce that state so a future run can reproduce it. If the page depends on account data, feature flags, locale, or permissions, keep those inputs stable between captures.
2. Establish a reference capture
Capture the page in the state you intend to preserve and treat that image as the baseline for later review. A baseline should be deliberate: confirm that it represents the desired design before using it as a reference. If the baseline already contains a defect or transient loading state, a comparison can make that state look expected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Capture and upload the later image
Run the same page setup again, capture a new screenshot, and upload the image using the current SmartUI API workflow. The documentation describes uploading locally captured images; it does not establish that every capture method, framework, or browser is supported. Check the current API reference for required image format, build identifiers, authentication, and request structure before implementing the upload.
4. Check build status and retrieve screenshots
Use the documented build-status operation to determine whether processing has completed, then retrieve the relevant screenshot through the screenshot operation. The API material supports these actions, but does not by itself establish what status values or failure responses a current integration returns. Handle the actual responses documented for your API version rather than hard-coding assumptions from an example found elsewhere.
5. Review the visual changes
Inspect the changed regions in context. Ask whether the difference is expected, whether it affects content or usability, and whether it appears consistently across the runs or contexts you care about. A screenshot comparison can direct attention, but a reviewer still needs to decide whether a change should be accepted or corrected. The reviewed SmartUI material does not establish specific threshold settings, masking features, or automated approval rules.
How to make screenshot comparisons more dependable
The following are general visual-testing practices, not claims about SmartUI-specific controls. They reduce noise by making the reference and new capture as similar as possible apart from the code change being evaluated.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the capture conditions consistent
- Viewport: use the same width and height for baseline and later images. A responsive layout can legitimately rearrange itself when the viewport changes.
- Browser and rendering context: compare like with like when investigating a change. Browser engine, version, operating system, and device scale can affect rendering.
- Page state: use the same route, user state, locale, feature flags, and meaningful test data.
- Load completion: capture after fonts, images, and other important assets have loaded. A page captured while content is still arriving can create misleading differences.
- Dynamic content: identify changing timestamps, rotating promotions, random values, or personalized content. Stabilize the test data or account for the variation using a method supported by your tooling; do not assume SmartUI provides a particular masking feature.
Make the baseline reviewable
Keep a record of why a baseline was created or updated and tie it to an intentional UI change where possible. When a new capture differs, reviewers should be able to compare it with the previous expected state and understand what changed. Updating a baseline merely to clear a difference can conceal an actual regression.

Expand coverage with a reason
Additional browser, viewport, and page-state captures can expose issues that a single screenshot misses, but each combination adds images to review and maintain. Prioritize the routes and contexts that matter to your users. The material reviewed does not establish SmartUI’s current browser or device matrix, so verify availability before planning coverage around a specific combination.
Can I compare a Figma design with a live website?
LambdaTest announced on January 23, 2025 that SmartUI’s Figma Web CLI could compare Figma designs directly with live pages, URLs, and web application screens. This is a dated vendor announcement, not confirmation that the CLI is currently available, supported, or unchanged. If design-to-live comparison is central to your workflow, check LambdaTest’s current SmartUI materials for availability, setup instructions, and supported inputs before relying on it.
Conceptually, a design comparison asks whether a rendered implementation matches a design reference; a regression comparison asks whether the implementation changed relative to an earlier implementation. Both can reveal visual deviations, but the reference and the purpose of review differ. Even with a design reference, rendering conditions and responsive behavior matter: make sure the design frame and live page correspond to the same intended size and state.

Does SmartUI support my framework and browser?
The available material does not establish a current framework support matrix or a complete browser and device list. The API documentation’s image-upload workflow indicates that locally captured images can be supplied, but that alone does not prove that a particular framework integration, browser automation setup, CI provider, or device preset is officially supported. Verify the current SmartUI documentation for the exact combination you plan to use.
Before adopting the workflow, confirm how your team will capture images, identify or group a build, authenticate upload requests, detect completion, retrieve screenshots, and access visual differences for review. Treat each of those as a setup question for the current product documentation; do not infer a specific UI path or integration command from the high-level API operations alone.
How much does LambdaTest SmartUI cost?
Current SmartUI pricing, plan limits, and included usage are not established by the material available for this article. Pricing and quotas can change, so consult LambdaTest’s current plan information and confirm whether visual testing is included in the edition and usage allowance you intend to buy. Do not use a figure from an older API reference or an undated third-party listing as a current quote.
What LambdaTest’s customer example does—and does not—show
In a LambdaTest-published case study, Dashlane said it introduced SmartUI for visual regression testing in 2024 and captured thousands of screenshots to support interface consistency across browsers and devices. This is a customer example reported by the vendor. It illustrates one organization’s adoption, but it is not independent evidence of typical results, a performance benchmark, or a guarantee that another team will achieve the same outcome.

If you need clean page screenshots through an API rather than a full SmartUI comparison workflow, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first. It captures a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It supplies screenshots; it is not a substitute for establishing baselines and reviewing regressions in SmartUI.
One cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. For a team that needs visual regression, pair its capture output with a separate baseline and review process.
