Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To create a website thumbnail in Canva, first find the exact pixel dimensions and crop behavior of the place where it will appear. Create a custom-size design in Canva at those dimensions, compose it to stay clear when shown small, preview it at display size, then download it as PNG or JPG according to its contents and file-size needs. There is no single thumbnail size that fits every website.
1. Find the website’s thumbnail requirements
Before opening Canva, check the specification for the destination: it may be in your CMS, theme settings, design system, or the documentation for the page component. Record the required width and height in pixels, accepted file formats, maximum file size, and how the image is cropped or displayed. A card may use a fixed crop even when you upload a correctly sized image, so dimensions alone are not always enough.
- Width and height: Use the exact values if the destination specifies them.
- Aspect ratio: Divide the width by the height, or compare the proportions visually. Keep that ratio from the Canva canvas through export.
- Crop behavior: Find out whether the site shows the whole image, crops to fill a frame, or lets an editor choose a focal point.
- File constraints: Note the permitted formats and maximum upload size before choosing export settings.
If the site gives no specification, choose a landscape size that suits the placement and keep the same proportions through design and export. Do not treat YouTube’s 16:9 thumbnail example as a universal website standard: that ratio is a platform-specific example, not a rule for web cards.
2. Create a custom-size design in Canva
- Open Canva and choose Create a design.
- Select Custom size.
- Enter the destination’s width and height, and set the units to pixels.
- Create the design and keep it as your master version.
Canva’s Help Center documents custom dimensions from 40 × 40 px up to 8000 × 3125 px. If your required dimensions fall outside those limits, Canva’s custom-size workflow may not produce the needed canvas; check whether the destination accepts a different size or use another suitable image workflow.

For alternate placements, preserve the master and use Canva’s Copy & resize or resize controls to make another version. The Help Center describes selecting suggested sizes or entering a custom size, locking or unlocking the aspect ratio, choosing pages, and creating copies. Controls and availability can vary by plan. A copy also protects the original from changes made while adapting the layout.
3. Compose for a small card or grid
A thumbnail is viewed at the size the website displays it, not at the scale you use while editing. Build around one obvious subject or focal image. Add a short headline only if it helps identify the page; long copy usually becomes difficult to read when reduced. Choose a bold, simple typeface and strong contrast between foreground and background.
- Keep text, logos, and other essential details away from the edges. A destination may crop the image to fit its card.
- Use a clear visual hierarchy: a reader should notice the subject first, then any headline or supporting mark.
- Prefer uncluttered backgrounds and avoid adding details that disappear at small sizes.
- For a series of related pages, reuse a consistent accent color or alignment so the images feel related without making every thumbnail indistinguishable.
These are practical design recommendations, not a universal formula or a claim about a particular Canva feature. The right treatment depends on the content and the site’s layout.

4. Preview at the actual display size
Zoom out in Canva or inspect the exported image at approximately the size it will occupy on the site. Check that the focal point is still apparent, the text remains readable without zooming, and essential elements are not close to likely crop edges. If your site has responsive cards, preview both desktop and mobile placements: the same uploaded image may occupy different proportions on different screens.
If a preview looks weak, simplify the composition or make the subject and text more prominent before exporting. Enlarging the design on screen is not a useful readability check; the small-size preview is the one that reveals whether the thumbnail works in context.
5. Choose PNG or JPG and download
In Canva, choose Share > Download, then select PNG or JPG. Canva’s help guidance recommends PNG for text and line art and describes JPG as useful when a smaller file is important. Its export reference says that when no output size is supplied, the exported image uses the design dimensions.
Rank #3
| Format | Choose it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | The thumbnail contains crisp text, icons, flat graphics, or needs transparency. | It may produce a larger file than a photographic JPG. |
| JPG | The image is primarily photographic and keeping the file smaller is the priority. | It is less suited to preserving crisp text and line art than PNG. |
Use the destination’s accepted formats and size limit as the deciding constraints. If the CMS rejects the upload, check the actual file extension, pixel dimensions, and file size against its requirements before changing quality settings. Repeatedly lowering quality without checking the cause can make the image worse without resolving the rejection.
6. Fix a blurry Canva thumbnail
If the downloaded image looks blurry, Canva’s Help Center advises checking both the design dimensions and the source-image quality. It says designs below 500 × 500 px are likely to look blurry when downloaded, recommends using high-quality source images, and notes that filters can soften an image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Check the canvas dimensions. Confirm that the design is large enough for the destination and has the right proportions. Canva’s cited guidance warns about designs below 500 × 500 px; that is guidance about likely blur, not a substitute for the destination’s exact specification.
- Inspect the original photo or graphic. A small or soft source image can remain soft when placed on a larger canvas. Use a sharper source asset rather than expecting export settings to restore missing detail.
- Review effects and filters. Remove or reduce unnecessary softening effects, then inspect the result at the intended display size.
- Check the downloaded file itself. Open the export and verify its pixel dimensions and appearance before uploading. This separates a design or export issue from how the website later scales or crops the image.
- Choose the appropriate format and settings. PNG is preferable for text according to Canva’s help guidance. Canva also says Pro-family plans can increase PNG/JPG size or quality; availability of those controls depends on plan.
Do not assume that adding sharpening or effects is the first fix. Start with canvas size and the quality of the source image, which are the causes Canva specifically points readers to check.

7. Make separate sizes when the site needs them
If the site uses several thumbnail placements, a single crop may not suit all of them. Use Canva’s resize controls to create a version for each required placement, choosing a suggested size or entering a custom one. Preserve a copy of the original, and use aspect-ratio locking when you want to keep proportions; unlocking it changes the canvas ratio and may distort the composition unless you adjust the layout.
After resizing, inspect each version independently. Automatic resizing can alter text wrapping, spacing, and subject placement even if the new aspect ratio seems close. Reposition the focal image, check line breaks, and keep critical elements away from crop edges. If Canva’s relevant resize or quality controls are not available in your plan, check Canva’s current plan and feature details before building a workflow that depends on them.

If you need a screenshot of a live webpage as source imagery, rather than a designed Canva thumbnail, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one GET request. It does not replace the Canva design steps above: use it to capture a page, then bring that image into Canva if you need to add a title, branding, or a deliberate crop. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot and page-information tools for AI agents, and its API supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF output. If a capture returns a page that is blocked or blank, the API does not turn that page into a usable Canva image; check the returned verdict before using the file.
There are 1,000 screenshots per month on the free plan with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan to try it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Canva’s YouTube thumbnail size for a website card?
Only if the website placement calls for the same dimensions and ratio. Canva’s 16:9 example is specific to YouTube, not a general website requirement.
Can Canva resize a thumbnail without changing the design?
Canva documents resize controls and the option to create a copy for an alternate size. Still review the resized layout: text wrapping and element placement can change.
Why does an image look different after upload?
The site may crop or scale it to fit its component. Compare the uploaded image with the destination’s specified dimensions and crop behavior, and preview the relevant desktop and mobile placements.
