To set the image that appears when an Elementor page is shared, edit the page in Elementor, open Page Settings, choose the Yoast SEO tab, and configure Social media appearance. Set the image there, save or update the page, and then inspect the generated og:image tag. Elementor documents this integration for paid Yoast subscribers. The ordinary Elementor Featured Image field describes the page but is not documented as a direct Open Graph image control.

What an Open Graph image does

Open Graph (OG) metadata tells a social network which title, description, URL and image to use for a shared link. On an Elementor page, the visual design and the social preview are related but separate. Elementor renders the page, while an SEO plugin such as Yoast outputs the metadata in the page source.

The most predictable setup is an explicit, page-level social image. If you do not provide one, Yoast can choose an image through its documented fallback rules. That distinction matters when a page contains several images or when its featured image is different from the image you want people to see in a share.

What you need before editing

  • An editable page or post built with Elementor.
  • Yoast SEO installed and active if you want Elementor’s integrated Social media appearance controls.
  • A Yoast plan that includes the documented Elementor social-appearance integration. Elementor currently lists this feature as available to paid Yoast subscribers.
  • The final image uploaded to your WordPress Media Library or otherwise available to the image picker.
  • Permission to update the page and, if necessary, change site-wide SEO settings.

Menu names can change as Elementor and Yoast release updates. The paths below match the official documentation reviewed on September 29, 2026.

Set the image from Elementor’s Yoast panel

  1. Open the page in Elementor. In WordPress, open the page or post you want to share and select Edit with Elementor.
  2. Open Page Settings. In the Elementor editor, click the Page Settings icon in the top bar. Elementor describes Page Settings as the place to edit basic information such as the page name, featured image and background. See Elementor’s Page Settings documentation.
  3. Choose Yoast SEO. Select the Yoast SEO tab in Page Settings. If that tab is absent, check the troubleshooting section below before changing templates or adding another plugin.
  4. Open Social media appearance. Select Social media appearance. Elementor’s integration guide says this area lets you customize the preview image, title and description shown when the page is shared on services such as Facebook, X and Instagram, and lists the control as a paid Yoast subscriber feature. The current guide is at Yoast SEO integration with Elementor.
  5. Choose the image. Use the image control to select or upload the exact graphic you want associated with this URL. Check the thumbnail and confirm that you selected the intended file rather than a logo, banner or earlier revision.
  6. Set the share title and description. These fields are optional for the image itself, but setting them together prevents a correct image from appearing with an obsolete title or summary.
  7. Save the page. Click Update or Publish in Elementor. Saving only the media item does not change the page’s metadata; the page must be updated after the social settings are changed.

Verify that Elementor and Yoast output the image

Do not rely only on the editor thumbnail. Open the public page in a browser, view its generated source (often available through View Page Source), and search for og:image. The value should be the URL of the image you selected. Also check og:title and og:description if you edited those fields.

Inspect the source of the public URL, not an Elementor preview URL or an administrator-only version. If the tag is present but a social network still shows an older card, the network may be using a previously fetched preview. The documentation reviewed for this guide does not establish one universal cache-refresh command or timing for every platform, so do not promise an immediate refresh. Recheck the public source first, then use the platform’s own preview or refresh facility when it provides one.

Featured Image versus an Open Graph image

Elementor’s Featured Image field is documented as general page information. Elementor does not state that this field directly writes an Open Graph image tag. With Yoast, a dedicated social image has higher priority than a featured image, so use the Social media appearance control when a particular share image matters.

Setting What it represents How it affects og:image Best use
Elementor Page Settings > Featured Image The page or post’s representative image in Elementor’s page information. Elementor’s documentation does not identify it as an explicit OG-image field. Yoast may use a post’s featured image as a fallback. Use for the page’s normal featured-image needs; do not depend on it alone for a precise social card.
Elementor Page Settings > Yoast SEO > Social media appearance A page-level social preview image, title and description. Yoast treats a user-defined Facebook/social image as the first choice in its hierarchy. Use when you need a controlled image for this specific URL.
Yoast global Social default image A site-wide fallback configured in Yoast. Used only after more specific page, featured or content images are unavailable. Provide a safety net for pages that have no dedicated image.

How Yoast selects an image when you do not set one

Yoast’s functional specification gives this general hierarchy for regular content:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. A user-defined Facebook image in the Yoast Social tab (the explicit page-level choice).
  2. The post’s featured image.
  3. A prominent image found in the page content.
  4. The Social default image configured in Search Appearance.
  5. The site’s fallback or default social image.

The exact fallback can vary by content type and configuration. This is why two Elementor pages with similar layouts can produce different previews when neither has an explicit social image. Setting the image in the page-level social panel removes that uncertainty.

If the Social media appearance control is missing

Confirm the Yoast integration and subscription

Elementor currently labels this integrated control as a paid Yoast subscriber feature. Confirm that Yoast SEO is active, connected to the expected account or license, and updated to a version that exposes the integration. A free or differently configured installation may show general SEO fields without the social-image panel.

Check the global Open Graph switch

Yoast says Open Graph data is enabled by default, but documents this route for checking it: WordPress Dashboard > Yoast SEO > Settings > Site features > Social sharing. Turn Open Graph data on and save the setting if it is disabled. The labels can change between releases; use the equivalent Social sharing setting in your installed version. Yoast’s setup explanation is at How to add Facebook’s Open Graph meta tags.

Check the editing context

Make sure you opened the actual page or post in Elementor, rather than a Theme Builder template, archive, or preview that does not own the final URL’s metadata. Save the page, open its public URL, and inspect the source again.

Troubleshooting wrong or missing images

The old image still appears

First confirm that the page source contains the new og:image URL. If it does, the stale card is outside Elementor’s editor and may be a previously fetched social preview. Use the relevant network’s refresh or link-inspection feature if available, but allow for platform-specific caching because no universal refresh interval is documented here.

A featured image overrides the image you expected

Check the page-level Social media appearance field. Yoast’s documented order places a user-defined social image before a featured image. If the page-level field is empty, Yoast can legitimately fall back to the featured image or a prominent content image.

No og:image tag is in the source

Check Yoast’s Social sharing setting, update the page, and view the source of the public URL again. If another SEO or sharing plugin is active, temporarily identify which one is generating metadata rather than enabling additional generators at random.

Two different images or titles are present

Yoast warns that another plugin generating Open Graph data at the same time can cause incorrect titles, descriptions or images. Choose one plugin to own the Open Graph output and disable the duplicate output in the other plugin. Then clear any page, server or CDN cache you control, update the page, and inspect the source for a single authoritative set of tags.

The Yoast tab exists but the image picker fails

Verify that the media file is available in WordPress, that you have permission to use it, and that the page can be saved without an editor error. Select an existing Media Library item as a test. If that works, re-upload or replace the problematic file and update the page again.

Keep the metadata predictable

  • Use one deliberate image for each important landing page instead of relying on whichever image happens to be detected in content.
  • Keep the social title and description aligned with the visible page so a share does not promise information the page does not contain.
  • After changing the image, verify the public HTML and not just Elementor’s editing interface.
  • Document which plugin owns Open Graph output so a future site redesign does not introduce a second generator.
  • When changing a page template, recheck a representative URL because fallback selection can differ by content type.

Or skip the browser setup

If your immediate need is a clean screenshot of the rendered Elementor page while you review its layout, ScreenshotNeo can capture the URL through one request. It does not replace Open Graph metadata or choose the social card image; it gives you a dependable page image for QA, documentation or a separate workflow. Before capture, it accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers.

See the full parameter list in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Replace the example URL with your published Elementor URL.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will changing an Elementor image update previews that were already shared?

Not necessarily. The page’s metadata changes after you save the page, but a social platform may retain a previously fetched card. Check the live source first and use that platform’s own refresh mechanism when available.

Can I use a different social image without changing the page’s featured image?

Yes. Set the image in Elementor’s Yoast SEO > Social media appearance panel. That page-level social image is separate from Elementor’s general Featured Image field.

What happens if two SEO plugins output Open Graph tags?

The tags can conflict, producing the wrong title, description or image. Configure one plugin as the sole Open Graph generator and disable duplicate output in the other.

Is the Social media appearance panel included with every Yoast plan?

Elementor’s current integration documentation lists this control as available to paid Yoast subscribers. Check the plan and interface in your installed versions.
