To view a saved website screenshot, open the downloaded image in your computer or phone’s image viewer. If the capture was copied, paste it into an app that accepts images. A different feature exists in Chrome DevTools: its Network panel can show a strip of thumbnails representing how a page appeared during loading.
This distinction matters. A saved screenshot is a standalone image you can inspect or share; Chrome’s page-load thumbnails are a diagnostic timeline tied to network activity. The steps below cover both, along with viewport, full-page and element captures.
First, identify the kind of thumbnail you have
| What you have | What it is | How to view it | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downloaded PNG, JPEG or WebP | A normal image file saved by a browser or capture service | Open it with the device’s ordinary image viewer, or drag it into a browser window | Reviewing, documenting or sharing a page appearance |
| Copied browser capture | Image data on the clipboard | Paste into an image editor, document, chat composer or other image-capable app | Quick annotation or sharing without first saving a file |
| Chrome DevTools Screenshots strip | Thumbnails taken at points during a live page load | Open DevTools’ Network panel, enable Screenshots, reload, then select a thumbnail | Investigating rendering order and network activity |
Do not treat a page-load thumbnail as the same thing as a final, full-page screenshot. It records one moment in the loading process and may show an incomplete layout, unloaded images or a temporary state.
View a saved website screenshot
Open a downloaded capture
- Find the file in the browser’s download list or the device’s Downloads folder.
- Open it with the default image viewer. On a desktop, double-clicking normally works; on a phone or tablet, tap the file and choose the photo or gallery app.
- Use the viewer’s zoom control to inspect text and details. If the image is wider or taller than the screen, use fit-to-window first, then zoom in.
- To share it, attach the image file to an email, document or message rather than taking another screenshot of the screenshot.
Firefox’s user-facing screenshot tool can copy a capture to the clipboard or download it. Firefox Developer Tools also documents page and element captures that are saved in the browser’s Downloads directory by default. If you cannot see a file, open the browser’s downloads list and use its “show in folder” or equivalent command.
#1 Best Overall
Paste a capture copied to the clipboard
- Open an application that accepts images, such as an image editor, document editor or chat composer.
- Choose Paste (or press the platform’s paste shortcut).
- If nothing appears, return to the browser and copy the capture again; clipboard contents can be replaced by your next copy operation.
- Save the pasted image if you need it after closing the application or restarting the device.
Use Firefox to create and then view a capture
Firefox’s built-in screenshot feature offers separate choices for the visible area and the full page. A full-page capture includes content outside the current viewport; a visible-area capture contains only what is currently on screen.
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Open the browser screenshot command from the page context menu or the browser’s screenshot control, depending on your Firefox version.
- Choose the visible-page option, select a region, or choose the full-page option.
- Copy the result to the clipboard or download it.
- Open the downloaded file in an image viewer, or paste the copied result into an image-capable app.
For developer-oriented captures, open Firefox Developer Tools and use its page or element screenshot commands. Those captures are saved to Downloads unless you choose another location through your operating system’s file handling.

View Chrome’s page-load thumbnail strip
Chrome DevTools can show how a page looked at several moments while it loaded. Google Chrome for Developers describes it this way: “The Screenshots tab provides thumbnails of how the page looked at various points during the loading process.”
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Open DevTools (for example, from the browser’s developer-tools command).
- Select the Network panel.
- In Network settings, enable the Screenshots option.
- Reload the page while DevTools remains open. Use a normal reload when you want to observe the complete request sequence.
- Open the resulting Screenshots tab in the Network panel.
- Click a thumbnail. Chrome shows the network activity occurring at that point in the load, allowing you to relate a visual change to requests and resources.
If the strip is empty, reload after enabling the option; thumbnails are generated during a load and are not retroactively created for a page that finished loading before the setting was turned on.

Choose the right capture scope
Viewport (visible area)
A viewport capture records only the dimensions currently displayed in the browser window or emulated device. Use it when you need to check what a user sees without scrolling, compare responsive breakpoints or document a specific screen size.
Full page
A full-page capture includes content below the fold and other content not currently visible. It is the better choice for reviewing an entire landing page, archiving a long article or checking whether lazy-loaded sections render farther down the document.
Rank #4
Element or region
An element capture isolates a selected component, such as a pricing card, navigation bar or form. A region capture lets you draw a rectangle around the exact area of interest. These smaller images are easier to annotate and place in bug reports.
Chrome Device Mode distinguishes the current viewport from a full-size page capture. Firefox likewise documents visible-area and full-page choices. Keep the scope in the filename or notes—for example, checkout-viewport-1440.png versus checkout-full-page.png—so reviewers do not confuse two different images.

Troubleshoot missing, blank or misleading thumbnails
The screenshot file will not open
- Confirm the extension. A PNG, JPEG or WebP file should open in a modern image viewer. If the extension was changed manually, restore the original name.
- Re-download the file. An interrupted download can leave a partial file that appears in Downloads but cannot be decoded.
- Try another image-capable application. This separates a viewer problem from a damaged file.
The image is blank or only partly rendered
- For Chrome’s Network screenshots, reload after enabling Screenshots; the capture is produced during the load.
- Wait for the page’s important content to appear before taking a normal saved capture.
- Use a full-page capture when the desired content is below the viewport.
- Remember that a page-load thumbnail can intentionally represent an intermediate state, not the finished page.
The Chrome Screenshots tab is missing
- Verify that you are in the Network panel, not another DevTools panel.
- Open Network settings and turn on Screenshots.
- Reload the page with DevTools open. Existing loads do not automatically gain thumbnails after the setting is enabled.
The capture looks different from what another person sees
- Check whether one image is viewport-only while the other is full-page.
- Compare browser window size or emulated device dimensions.
- Check the capture moment: a page-load thumbnail may precede fonts, images or scripts that appear in the final state.
Automate a clean capture instead of inspecting it manually
If you need repeatable website images for documentation, visual checks or a content pipeline, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one GET request. It can accept consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Options useful for thumbnail workflows
- Capture the full page, one CSS-selected element or a chosen viewport.
- Use 12 device presets, any viewport, dark mode and retina scale.
- Wait for a selector, a delay or network idle before capture; click an element first when a menu or tab must be opened.
- Hide selectors, block ads, trackers, requests or resource types, and provide custom CSS or JavaScript.
- Set headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone and geolocation for authenticated or localized pages.
- Resize images, choose a transparent background, cache with a TTL you set, create signed links for public
<img>tags, submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call and read usage through the usage API. - For PDFs, set paper size, margins, landscape orientation and page ranges.
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify switching.
