Use Google Drive for controlled access, Imgur for a quick public image URL, Dropbox when capture and storage are already part of your workflow, and GitHub when the screenshot documents code or a bug.
Choose the right kind of screenshot link
Before uploading, decide what the recipient should see and whether the image contains sensitive information.
- Controlled file link: Google Drive lets you name recipients or use link-based access and assign Viewer, Commenter or Editor roles.
- Public image link: Imgur is fast and can provide a direct URL to the uploaded image. Treat a public upload as discoverable.
- Storage-and-capture link: Dropbox is convenient if your screenshots already live there.
- Developer-context link: GitHub attachments put an image URL directly into an issue, pull request, discussion or other supported text field.
A link is not created merely by taking a screenshot: the file must first be uploaded or attached. Do not put passwords, API keys, private customer data or unredacted personal information on a public host. Public-by-link access is different from Restricted access, and no service should be assumed to provide an unguessable, permanent or private URL.
Method 1: Google Drive for controlled sharing
- Open Google Drive and upload the screenshot.
- Select the file, choose Share, and inspect General access.
- Choose Restricted for named recipients, or Anyone with the link when anyone holding the URL may open it. Google describes the latter as: “Anyone who has the link can use your file, without signing in to their Google Account.”
- Choose Viewer, Commenter or Editor according to the recipient’s job.
- Review any available download, print and copy restrictions, then select Copy link.
Drive’s sharing link normally opens a viewer page rather than acting as a raw image URL. The owner’s name and email can be visible when a file link is shared, so check the account identity before sending a link outside your organization. Use Restricted access for confidential screenshots and add each recipient explicitly.

Method 2: Imgur for a public image URL
- Open Imgur and select New post.
- Browse for the screenshot or drag it into the upload area.
- Set the post privacy to public when you intentionally want a public post.
- Open the uploaded image and copy its direct URL.
Imgur says uploaded content can be located with a direct URL. Its help page lists a limit of 50 images per hour; the publication year for that limit is not stated, so verify the current limit if you are automating uploads. A direct image URL is useful in an HTML <img> tag, chat preview or Markdown, but public hosting is unsuitable for secrets, private screenshots or information that must later be withdrawn.
Method 3: Dropbox when screenshots already live there
- Upload the screenshot to Dropbox, or use Dropbox’s screenshot feature to capture it.
- For an existing file, open the file’s sharing controls and create a shared link.
- Apply the available audience and permission settings.
- Copy the shared link and test it in a private browser window.
Dropbox’s screenshot help says a link to the screenshot or image itself can be copied automatically according to your settings. The exact result depends on those settings: it may be a Dropbox viewing page or an image link. Dropbox is a practical choice when your team already stores and manages screenshots there, because capture, storage and link administration stay in one account.
Method 4: GitHub for issues and developer discussions
- Open the GitHub issue, pull request, discussion or other supported text field.
- Paste the image or use the attachment control.
- Wait for GitHub to upload it and insert the URL into the text field.
- Preview the post, confirm that the screenshot contains no secrets, and submit or save the text.
GitHub documents that, “When you attach a file, it is uploaded immediately to GitHub and the text field is updated to show the anonymized URL for the file.” The documented maximum image size for this attachment workflow is 10 MB. This is best for a bug report or code review where the image needs technical context, not as a general-purpose image host. Avoid attaching confidential material to a public repository discussion.

How to make the link safer and more useful
Remove secrets before upload
Crop or redact tokens, passwords, email addresses, customer records, browser tabs and notifications. Blurring is not a guarantee if the underlying pixels can be recovered; opaque redaction is safer.
Choose access deliberately
For Drive, start with Restricted and add named recipients. Use Anyone with the link only when link possession is an acceptable authorization method. For GitHub and Imgur, assume the surrounding context or URL may be public.
Test the recipient experience
Open the URL in a private or logged-out browser window. Confirm whether sign-in is required, whether the image loads at the intended size, and whether the link opens a viewer page instead of the raw file you expected.

Use a descriptive message
Tell the recipient what the screenshot shows, which region or control matters, and whether the link is view-only. A URL without context slows down bug reports and support requests.

The recipient gets “request access” in Drive
The file is still Restricted or the recipient is signed into a different account. Add the correct email under Share, or change General access to Anyone with the link if that is acceptable.
The link opens a page, not an image
Drive and many Dropbox links are viewer pages. Use the service’s copy-image or direct-URL control where available, or keep the viewer link when permission controls matter more than embedding.

Imgur or GitHub rejects the upload
Check file size, format and current service limits. GitHub’s documented attachment maximum is 10 MB; for larger images, reduce dimensions or export a compressed PNG, JPEG or WebP and remove unnecessary metadata.
The screenshot contains a popup or cookie banner

The API response is not a usable screenshot

Can I turn a screenshot into a URL without uploading it?
No. A URL must point to a hosted file or attachment; take the screenshot first, then upload it to a service.
Which option is best for a confidential screenshot?
Use Google Drive with Restricted access and named recipients, then test the link while signed out to verify the intended permission.
Which option gives a direct image URL?
Imgur explicitly provides a direct URL after upload. Dropbox behavior depends on its sharing settings, while Drive commonly opens a viewer page.
