Robot Framework’s SeleniumLibrary can capture a browser page, but its standard Capture Page Screenshot keyword should be treated as a viewport screenshot—not a guarantee that the whole document appears in one image. For full-page output, use a full-page command supported by your browser driver, or implement a custom capture that measures and captures the document, or stitches overlapping scroll segments. The right approach depends on your browser, driver, page behavior, and CI environment.
What Robot Framework’s screenshot keyword captures
SeleniumLibrary’s Capture Page Screenshot is the standard keyword for browser-page evidence. Its documentation describes it as: “Takes a screenshot of the current page and embeds it into a log file.” It accepts an optional filename, saves the image in the configured screenshot directory (or the Robot Framework log directory by default), and returns the saved path.
Use it for a normal browser capture, but do not assume it includes content below the visible viewport. Whether a single image can cover the full document depends on a browser- or driver-specific full-page capability, or a custom implementation. SeleniumLibrary’s ordinary failure screenshot can also omit lower-page content.
Set up a repeatable viewport screenshot
This minimal example captures the currently visible browser area. It also sets a stable artifact directory and uses an indexed filename so repeated captures do not overwrite one another.

A configured screenshot directory makes artifacts easier to find than relying on the default log directory. For report output, SeleniumLibrary also documents EMBED to place the image in log.html and, in supported versions, BASE64 to return encoded image data while embedding it.
Choose a full-page capture method
Use a browser-driver full-page command when available
Some browser automation setups expose a driver-specific full-page screenshot command. If your browser and driver provide one, it is usually the most direct way to capture the document as one image. Robot Framework does not make this capability universal through Capture Page Screenshot; verify the command against the exact browser and driver versions used locally and in CI.
Keep the driver-specific operation in a custom Robot Framework keyword so your test case states what it needs—such as Capture Full Page Screenshot—without scattering browser-specific details through test suites. The implementation should save to the same artifact directory as ordinary screenshots and report a clear failure if the full-page operation is unsupported.
Resize the capture viewport using document dimensions
A common custom pattern is to read document.documentElement.scrollWidth and document.documentElement.scrollHeight, resize the browser window to those dimensions, take a screenshot, and restore the original window size. This can work where the driver captures the resized viewport, but it is an implementation technique, not a guarantee: browser window limits, scaling, scrollbars, very tall documents, and driver behavior may affect the result.

The essential sequence is:
- Wait for the page’s meaningful content and images to load.
- Record the current browser window dimensions.
- Read the document’s total scroll width and height.
- Resize to a capture size supported by the driver and browser.
- Capture the image to the configured output location.
- Restore the original window dimensions even if capture fails.
Place the resize-and-capture logic in a custom Python or JavaScript keyword and use SeleniumLibrary to call it from Robot Framework. The specific driver API and Robot Framework integration depend on your stack, so do not copy a driver command intended for a different browser and assume it will behave identically.
Scroll, capture overlapping segments, and stitch
If resizing to the full document size is unreliable, capture several viewport images while scrolling and stitch them into one image in a custom keyword. Use a small overlap between adjacent captures so the segments can be aligned and slight scroll or scaling differences do not leave gaps. Restore the original scroll position when appropriate.
Stitching needs extra care with sticky or fixed headers, animations, content that changes as the page scrolls, and sections that load only when they approach the viewport. A fixed header may appear in every segment; a lazy-loaded image may be missing unless the page is scrolled far enough to trigger it. Decide whether the goal is a visually continuous page or a faithful sequence of viewport states, then handle those elements accordingly.
Wait for dynamic content before measuring
Measuring a document before the page has settled can produce a short capture or omit content that appears later. Waiting for a main content element is a useful start, but it does not prove that asynchronous data, images, or lazy-loaded sections have finished loading.

- For images, wait for relevant image elements to finish loading before taking dimensions, or scroll through the page first to trigger lazy loading.
- Use a deliberate wait condition or delay for content that appears asynchronously; avoid relying only on a fast initial page load.
- For long pages, consider scrolling through the document before the final capture so lazy-loaded content has a chance to render.
- Be alert to sticky headers, animations, and content that shifts during capture, since these can make segments overlap incorrectly or cause seams.
Keep artifacts, reports, and output choices clear
Use Set Screenshot Directory to control where SeleniumLibrary writes screenshots, and use indexed filenames when a suite can capture more than one image. The keyword returns the path, which can be useful when a custom keyword or later test step needs to refer to the saved file.

Choose between a report-embedded image and a file artifact based on how the team consumes test results. EMBED places the image in the Robot Framework log; BASE64 is documented for supported SeleniumLibrary versions. If the capture is produced by a custom full-page routine, make sure that routine writes a file or returns data in a way compatible with your test report workflow.
Browser screenshots are not desktop screenshots
Robot Framework’s built-in Screenshot library captures the machine desktop. Taking a screenshot requires a physical or virtual display and one of the supported operating-system tools or Python modules. That can be appropriate for desktop evidence, but it does not provide a browser-document full-page guarantee.
Capture Element Screenshot is a different SeleniumLibrary capability: it targets a located element rather than the whole document. SeleniumLibrary warns that element screenshot support is limited by browser-vendor implementation, so it should not be treated as a dependable substitute for full-page capture.

For repeatable CI evidence, check more than whether a file exists: confirm that lower content is present, that images have loaded, and that the result is consistent in the same headless browser and driver configuration used for the test run. A custom full-page method can take longer and produce much taller images than a viewport capture; capture only when the evidence is useful and keep image dimensions manageable for your reports and artifact storage.

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect full-page captures
The screenshot contains only the visible viewport
Cause: Capture Page Screenshot performed an ordinary page capture, or the selected driver did not use a full-page operation. Fix: use a supported browser-driver full-page command or implement document-dimension resizing or scroll-and-stitch capture.
The bottom of the page is cut off
Cause: dimensions were read before content finished loading, the driver could not capture the requested height, or the page grew during capture. Fix: wait for content and images, scroll to trigger lazy loading, then measure again. If the page exceeds reliable window dimensions, use overlapping segments and stitch them.
Lazy-loaded images or sections are blank
Cause: the browser never scrolled far enough to trigger loading before the screenshot. Fix: scroll through the document first, wait for content to appear, and only then perform the final capture.
The output has repeated headers, gaps, or seams
Cause: fixed elements repeat in each segment, or the scroll distance and overlap do not match the actual movement. Fix: account for sticky elements in the stitching logic and use overlapping captures that can be aligned. If the page changes while scrolling, stabilize its content or prefer a driver-supported full-page operation where available.
The screenshot is saved somewhere unexpected or overwritten
Cause: the default log directory is being used, or repeated captures reuse one filename. Fix: set Set Screenshot Directory and include {index} in the filename.

A custom capture works locally but fails in CI
Cause: browser or driver support, headless display setup, or dimension limits differ between environments. Fix: use the same browser and driver configuration in CI as in development, confirm whether a physical or virtual display is needed for the chosen method, and test the capture against a representative long page.

Frequently asked questions
Can I capture a full-page screenshot on every browser with SeleniumLibrary?
No universal guarantee is established for every browser and driver. The standard SeleniumLibrary page screenshot is an ordinary capture; full-page support depends on a driver-specific capability or a custom method that you validate in your target environment.
Does Robot Framework’s Screenshot library capture a whole web page?
It captures the machine desktop. A desktop image may show the browser window, but it does not ensure that content outside the visible browser area is included.
Can Capture Element Screenshot replace a full-page screenshot?
No. It captures a selected element and has browser-vendor implementation limitations; it is a separate feature from capturing the entire document.
