To capture an entire page in Chrome, open DevTools with F12 (or your platform’s DevTools shortcut), open the DevTools More options menu, and choose Capture a full size screenshot. In Firefox, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page in DevTools settings, then use the new toolbar button. A full-page capture includes content below the visible viewport; the ordinary screenshot command captures only what is currently visible.

What “full-page” means

A viewport screenshot records the browser area you can currently see. A full-size screenshot renders the page beyond that viewport, including lower sections that would normally require scrolling. This is useful for documenting long articles, reviewing responsive layouts, preserving a design reference, or sharing a complete page in one image.

Developer Tools can capture the page without installing an extension. However, browser interfaces change, and very long or highly dynamic pages can produce unusually tall files or incomplete visual states. If the page changes while it is being captured, first stabilize it by waiting for content, closing menus, and scrolling through any lazy-loaded sections.

Chrome: capture a full-size screenshot

Step-by-step

  1. Open the page you want to save.
  2. Open Chrome DevTools. Press F12 where that shortcut is available, or use Chrome’s menu to open Developer Tools.
  3. In the DevTools panel, open More options (the three-dot menu).
  4. Choose Capture a full size screenshot.
  5. Chrome downloads the image using your normal download settings. Open the browser’s download list or the configured Downloads folder to find it.

Chrome distinguishes this command from Capture screenshot. The latter records only the current viewport, while Capture a full size screenshot includes content that is not currently visible. The documented workflow is described in Google’s Chrome DevTools device-mode guide.

  • CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

If the command is missing

  • Make sure DevTools is the active window and that you opened the three-dot More options menu inside DevTools, not Chrome’s main browser menu.
  • Widen the DevTools panel if menu items are hidden by a narrow layout.
  • Reload the page after opening DevTools if the document has not finished loading.
  • Use the DevTools Command Menu as a fallback: open it from DevTools and search for “full size screenshot.” The exact keyboard shortcut for the Command Menu can vary by operating system and Chrome version, so searching by the command name is safer than relying on one key combination.

Firefox: enable the entire-page screenshot button

Toolbar method

  1. Open the target page and Firefox Developer Tools. Mozilla documents F12 for Windows and Linux; on macOS, its documented shortcut is Command-Option-I.
  2. Open DevTools settings.
  3. Find Available Toolbox Buttons.
  4. Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
  5. Close settings if necessary. A screenshot button appears in the DevTools toolbar.
  6. Click that button. Firefox saves the resulting image in the browser’s Downloads directory.

Mozilla documents the workflow in Taking screenshots. The same documentation notes that Developer Tools can capture an entire page or a single element.

Firefox Web Console command

Firefox also documents a console alternative. Open the Web Console and run:

screenshot page-full.png --fullpage

Replace page-full.png with the filename you want. Firefox saves the file to Downloads. Mozilla’s Tips page documents the screenshot <filename> --fullpage form.

Prepare the page before capturing

Wait for dynamic content

Single-page applications, charts, ads, and images may render after the initial load. Wait until the section you need is visible and stable. For pages that lazy-load images, scroll through the document once before capturing so lower images have a chance to load.

Close transient UI

Dismiss open navigation menus, tooltips, browser find bars, and developer overlays. A cookie dialog, newsletter prompt, or chat widget can cover content in the output just as it does in the viewport.

Choose the right responsive view

If you need a mobile or tablet version, turn on device emulation before capturing and select the required viewport. A full-size command captures the full page at that emulated width; it does not create separate desktop and mobile versions automatically.

Check sticky elements and repetition

Fixed headers, floating buttons, and sticky sidebars can appear over content repeatedly or obscure text. If the page offers a reader mode or print layout, compare that result with the normal page before deciding which representation is appropriate.

Output, size, and quality considerations

  • Very tall images: A long page can create a large PNG. Compress a copy for sharing, but retain the original if you need pixel-level review.
  • Text readability: Scaling a full-page image down to fit a document or slide can make text unreadable. Crop meaningful sections or provide the original file as a download.
  • Animated and video content: A screenshot records one moment, not an animation or playback sequence. Pause media at the frame you want.
  • Canvas and WebGL: Rendered graphics may depend on timing or GPU state. Capture after the visual has finished drawing.
  • Cross-origin or protected content: A browser may show a login wall, bot check, or error page instead of the intended document. DevTools cannot bypass access controls.

Troubleshooting

The image contains only the visible area

You selected Capture screenshot rather than Capture a full size screenshot. Open More options again and choose the full-size command.

Firefox has no screenshot button

Open DevTools settings, locate Available Toolbox Buttons, and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page. The control is not necessarily enabled by default.

The bottom of the page is blank

The page may use lazy loading or delayed scripts. Wait for network activity to settle, scroll through the document, and retry. If the site requires interaction to reveal content, perform that interaction before capture.

A consent banner or chat widget covers the page

Close the element before capturing. If it returns after reload, capture only after its dismissal has completed; a screenshot tool cannot infer which overlays you consider unwanted.

The file is unexpectedly huge

Long pages and high-density graphics increase dimensions and file size. Keep the original for archival use, then create a resized or compressed derivative for email or documentation.

The shortcut does nothing

F12 is not universal across browsers and operating systems. Use the browser’s Developer Tools menu instead. In Firefox on macOS, Mozilla documents Command-Option-I rather than F12; see the Firefox DevTools user documentation.

For repeatable captures, CI jobs, bulk URLs, or pages that need cleanup before the image is returned, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or a PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Here is a runnable cURL example (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and response details):

When to use DevTools versus an API

  • Use DevTools for an occasional manual capture, visual debugging, or a page you are already inspecting interactively.
  • Use an API when captures must run on a schedule, in a build pipeline, across many URLs, with consistent viewport and cleanup settings, or under an audit trail.
  • Use Firefox’s console command when you want a named file and a repeatable manual action without navigating menus.

Whichever method you choose, verify that the resulting image contains the intended page state, especially when content is personalized, gated, or rendered after load.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does F12 itself take a full-page screenshot?
