The save location belongs to the screenshot tool, not to one universal operating-system switch. First identify whether you are using Windows Snipping Tool, macOS Screenshot, Chromebook Screen Capture, a keyboard shortcut, or a third-party app. Then change that tool’s destination. The instructions below cover the built-in tools on Windows 10/11, macOS, and ChromeOS, plus a safe way to save one capture somewhere else.
Identify the capture tool before changing a folder
Two screenshots taken on the same computer can be saved by different programs. For example, changing Snipping Tool’s setting does not promise to change a third-party utility or every keyboard shortcut. Look at the interface that appears after you press the shortcut, or search your installed apps for the tool name.

If your capture does not appear in the expected folder, repeat the process with the application that actually displayed the capture controls. A folder change made for one tool can leave another tool unchanged.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Change Snipping Tool’s automatic-save location
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Select See More (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Settings.
- Use the automatic-save and default Screenshots-folder options shown there, then select the folder you want.
- Take a test snip and confirm that the new file appears in the selected destination.
Microsoft Support describes the normal behavior this way: after you capture a snip, it is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder. The Settings page is therefore the right place to change the behavior for captures handled by Snipping Tool.

Save only one capture to another folder
You do not need to change the default for a one-off export:
- Capture the area with Snipping Tool.
- Open the resulting image in the Snipping Tool editor if it is not already open.
- Select Save as.
- Pick a folder, enter a filename, choose the image format offered by the dialog, and save.
This creates an additional copy at the location you choose; it does not redefine where later automatic saves go.

A separate Windows known-folder method can redirect the Screenshots folder itself:

- Open Pictures in File Explorer.
- Right-click Screenshots and choose Properties.
- Open the Location tab.
- Select the new path, apply the change, and accept any confirmation Windows displays.
This route comes from a Microsoft Q&A community answer. That answer says it applies to Snipping Tool and some third-party screenshot applications, not to every capture shortcut. Treat it as a folder-location change, not a universal Windows screenshot switch. If a particular application has its own destination setting, use that setting first.
macOS
Choose a new default destination
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot toolbar.
- Select Options.
- Under the save-location choices, select a destination such as Documents, Clipboard, Mail, Messages, or Other Location to pick a folder.
- Close the toolbar and take a test screenshot.
Apple identifies the Desktop as the default location and provides the Options menu for changing it. Select Other Location when you need a project folder, a synchronized directory, or an external volume. Make sure that volume is available whenever you capture; otherwise choose a location that is always mounted.
Move one screenshot without changing the default
After a capture, a floating thumbnail appears briefly. Drag that thumbnail to a Finder window or another folder to place that individual image there. This is useful when most screenshots belong on the normal destination but one needs to go directly into a ticket, presentation, or project directory.

Choose a folder for future captures
- Press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows to open Screen Capture. The Show windows key is the rectangle-with-lines key on the top row.
- Open Settings in the capture controls.
- Choose the folder you want instead of the default Downloads location.
- Capture a test image and check the selected folder in the Files app.
ChromeOS adds later screenshots to the folder selected in Screen Capture settings. If you use a managed Chromebook, an administrator may restrict available folders or storage locations; choose from the destinations the device presents rather than assuming every path is writable.
Verify the result and diagnose mismatches
