Open the page that contains the document, select its download link or button, and save the file when your browser asks where to put it. If the document is a PDF that opens in a browser tab, use the PDF viewer’s Download or Save button, or right-click the PDF link and choose the browser’s “Save Link As” command. If no prompt appears, open the browser’s Downloads list and check its configured download folder.
The exact labels and behavior depend on your browser, device, file type, and settings. The steps below cover the common desktop workflow, PDF previews, mobile variations, security warnings, and failures.
What “download” means
Downloading saves a local copy of a file—such as a PDF, DOCX, spreadsheet, or image—on your computer, tablet, or phone. Merely viewing a document in a browser tab does not always save a usable copy in an obvious location. A preview may be streamed or displayed by the browser’s built-in viewer until you choose Download or Save.
Download a document in any browser
- Open the intended website. Navigate to the page that hosts the document. Check the domain and make sure it is the source you expect.
- Find the document control. Look for a link or button labeled Download, Download PDF, View document, Export, or the file name. A normal file link usually starts the download when selected.
- Select the link once. Your browser may immediately save the file, open a preview in a new tab, or display a Save dialog.
- Choose a location if prompted. Select a folder, keep the supplied file name unless you have a reason to change it, and confirm Save.
- Verify the result. Open the browser’s Downloads list and check that the file name, extension, and size look expected before opening it.
Use the website’s own download control rather than copying a random address from the page. Some links require you to sign in, accept terms, or complete a form before the server will provide the file.

When a PDF opens in a browser tab
A PDF opening in a tab is commonly a preview, not a failed download. In the PDF toolbar, select the downward-arrow Download icon or the Save control, then choose a folder if the browser asks. If the toolbar is hidden, move the pointer over the page or use the browser’s menu to reveal viewer controls.
Chrome on a computer
Clicking a normal download link saves most files. For a PDF link, right-click the link and choose Save Link As, select a destination, and confirm. Chrome settings can also determine whether PDFs open in Chrome or download automatically. To change that behavior, open Chrome’s settings, search for “PDF,” and select the PDF handling option offered by your version.
Firefox
Firefox normally applies the action configured for the file type instead of asking every time. A PDF may open in Firefox’s viewer, download automatically, or use another application. Open the Downloads panel from the toolbar to see recent files. To change behavior, open Settings, find Applications, locate Portable Document Format (PDF), and choose an action such as opening in Firefox, asking where to save, or using a selected application. Menu names can differ by release.
Edge
Select the PDF viewer’s download control when a document opens in a tab. To find where Edge stores files, open Settings > Downloads. That page shows the current location and, in supported versions, an option to ask where each file should be saved.
Safari on Mac
Use the PDF viewer’s download control or Safari’s save command. Safari’s download destination is configurable in Safari settings. If you later move a file or change the destination, Safari may no longer find it in the previous location; use Finder and the browser’s Downloads list to locate it.

Phones and tablets
Tap the document link, then use the system share, download, or save command shown by your browser. On iPhone or iPad, a PDF may open in a preview where you choose Share and then Save to Files. On Android, the browser may place the file in the Downloads app or Files app. Because mobile menus vary by browser and operating-system version, look for a downward arrow, “Download,” “Save to Files,” or “Open in…” rather than following desktop-only paths.
Find a file you already downloaded
Start with the browser’s Downloads list; it records the file name, status, and often a “Show in folder” command.

Search your device for the exact file name or extension if the list is empty. Common extensions include .pdf, .docx, .xlsx, and .zip. A file with a partial name or a temporary extension may still be downloading; wait for the browser to report completion.

Download safely
Do not dismiss a browser warning as routine. Warnings can indicate malware, deceptive software, an unfamiliar file, or insecure delivery. Confirm that the address is the intended website, that you expected the document, and that the file type matches what the page promised. If the source is unknown or the warning says the file is dangerous, stop and contact the site owner through a known channel.
Prefer HTTPS pages and official download links. Do not install a program merely because a page claims it is required to view a document. A PDF, office file, or archive should not unexpectedly become an executable installer. Keep your operating system and security software current, and scan an unexpected file before opening it.

Troubleshoot common download problems
The link opens a page instead of downloading
For a PDF, use the viewer’s Download icon. On Chrome, right-click the original PDF link and choose Save Link As. If the page requires an account or permission, sign in through the site’s normal login flow rather than trying to bypass it.
The file downloaded but you cannot find it
Open the browser’s Downloads list and inspect the destination. Use “Show in folder” where available. Check whether the browser is configured to ask for a location on every download; the file may be in a folder other than Downloads. On macOS, search in Finder; on Windows, search File Explorer; on mobile, check Files or Downloads.

Read the warning category and verify the source before taking action. A dangerous, suspicious, unverified, or insecure warning is a reason to investigate the site and file, not a prompt to disable protection. If the document is legitimate, ask the publisher for a safer link or an alternate delivery method.
The download stops or fails
- Confirm that your internet connection is working and reload the source page.
- Try the link again once, then check whether the site reports an outage or requires authentication.
- Check available storage and remove an incomplete temporary file before retrying.
- Try a different browser only as a diagnostic; keep the original security settings enabled.
- For Firefox-specific failures, use Firefox’s download troubleshooting guidance. Edge’s connectivity and download troubleshooting steps apply to Edge installations and should not be treated as universal browser fixes.
The PDF will not open
First confirm that the download completed and that the file size is not zero bytes. Try a current PDF viewer. If the file remains unreadable, contact the document’s source and ask for a complete, safe copy; the source can determine whether the file was damaged or intentionally restricted.
The site shows a blank page
Some documents are generated only after JavaScript runs, a form is submitted, or an account is authorized. Wait for the page to finish loading, allow only the site’s necessary scripts, and use its export or download control. If the page remains blank, report the problem to the site owner rather than downloading an unknown substitute from another domain.

Choose the right save format
Use the original format when you need to edit the document. Choose PDF when you need a fixed layout for reading or printing. If a site offers both “View” and “Download,” the view option may produce a browser preview while Download retrieves the original file. Renaming an extension does not convert a file and can make it unusable.
