After saving, check your browser’s Downloads list or your device’s Files app. A downloaded copy is not automatically permission to publish, modify, or sell the image.
Download an image on a Windows or Linux computer with Chrome
- Open the page in Chrome and locate the picture.
- Right-click directly on the image.
- Select Save Image As.
- Choose a folder and filename in the save dialog, then select Save.
- If Chrome did not ask where to save it, open Chrome’s menu and choose More > Downloads, or use the download tray near the address bar. Chrome documents this workflow in its computer download help.
The downloaded file keeps the format supplied by the site, such as JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP or SVG. If you need another format, convert a copy after downloading rather than changing the original extension manually.
Save a picture from a website on a Mac with Safari
- Open the page in Safari.
- Control-click the image or linked object.
- Choose Download Linked File.
- Open Safari’s Downloads list to confirm completion.
Safari’s menu applies to a linked item, so the available command can differ when you click a decorative background, a gallery control or another object that is not exposed as a downloadable link. Safari lets you configure where downloads are stored; Apple describes the command and destination settings in its Safari download guide.
Save an image on an iPhone or iPad
- In Chrome for iPhone or iPad, open the page containing the image.
- Touch and hold the image.
- Tap Save Image.
- Open the Photos app to find a picture saved to your camera library, or open the Files app if the browser offered a file download.
Google’s current Chrome instructions for iPhone and iPad use the Save Image label. A page may show a different menu when the item is a link, an animation, or a viewer rather than a standalone image.

Download an image on Android
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Touch and hold the image.
- Tap Download image.
- Open Chrome’s Downloads list or your Files app, then select the completed file.
These are the steps in Google’s Chrome help for Android. On some phones, the notification shade also provides a direct link to the downloaded file.
Save an image with Firefox on Android
- Open the webpage in Firefox for Android.
- Touch and hold the image.
- Choose Save image.
- Wait for the download-completed notice, then open Firefox’s menu and select Downloads.

If you cannot find the file, search by its filename or sort the folder by date. A download may have a different name from the page title, and a browser can append “(1)” when a filename already exists.

Why “Save Image” is missing
The ordinary save command is not guaranteed. A site may expose a CSS background, canvas drawing, embedded viewer, video frame or a link instead of a directly downloadable image. The browser’s context menu reflects that object, so it may show commands such as Save Link As or no image-saving command at all.

Look for a Download, Export, original-size, or three-dot menu in the image viewer. A site’s documented download control is the most reliable way to obtain the file it intends visitors to receive.
Check whether you clicked the image itself
On desktop, move the pointer over the visible picture before right-clicking. On a phone, touch and hold the picture rather than the surrounding caption, button, or page background.

Understand what the browser can and cannot provide
If the page does not expose an image file, the official browser guidance does not promise that screenshots, developer tools, or an extension will recover an original-resolution source. You may only be able to save what the page intentionally makes available. For a blocked or unclear download, contact the site owner or use its sharing controls.
Download versus screenshot
Saving an image downloads an asset the page exposes. A screenshot captures the rendered page, including text and layout, and may not contain the source image at its original resolution. Use a screenshot when you need a visual record of what a page looked like; use Save Image when you need the offered image file.

Downloading creates a local copy; it does not grant copyright permission. Before publishing, editing, or using an image commercially, check the license from both the image host and the license provider. Google’s image-use guidance notes that terms may require creator credit or restrict modification and commercial use. A search filter that indicates licensing is only a starting point—read the actual terms for the selected image.

Troubleshooting checklist
- No save command: the page may expose a background, canvas or protected viewer; use the site’s download control or ask the owner.
- Wrong file downloaded: right-click the image itself, not a surrounding link or thumbnail.
- Image looks low resolution: the page may only expose a resized version; saving it cannot restore pixels that were never delivered.
- Download appears stuck: check the browser’s Downloads list, connection, available storage and whether the page finished loading.
- File will not open: confirm the extension matches the actual format and try opening it in another image viewer; do not assume renaming changes the format.
- Permission is unclear: stop before reuse and verify the host’s license and any required attribution.
FAQ
Can I download an image that is displayed inside a gallery?
Yes, if the gallery exposes a Save, Download, or original-size control. Otherwise the browser may only expose the viewer or thumbnail, and the site owner’s control is the appropriate route.
Does saving an image notify the website owner?
The documented browser steps do not establish what notification a particular site sends. Check that site’s privacy notice if this matters.
Will a downloaded image keep its metadata?
Metadata preservation depends on how the site and browser deliver the file; the supplied browser guidance does not guarantee that metadata is retained.
