Short answer: if an Android app deliberately blocks capture, usually by applying the FLAG_SECURE window setting, Android does not provide a supported button or setting that overrides it. You may see a black or blank image, or “Can’t take screenshot due to security policy.” Use the app’s own export, share, download, print, or support process instead. The normal screenshot steps below apply only to screens that permit capture.
Why an Android app blocks screenshots
Android lets an app mark a window as unsuitable for screenshots and other non-secure displays. The platform documentation calls this control FLAG_SECURE: it tells Android not to allow screenshots or show that window on a non-secure display such as casting to a television or projector. Banking, password-manager, credential, and sensitive account screens are common reasons for using it.
When the flag is active, the operating system may return a blank capture rather than the visible content. This is different from pressing the wrong buttons or from an image-saving bug. However, not every failed screenshot proves that FLAG_SECURE is responsible. Work-profile rules, device-administrator policies, an app-specific restriction, the phone maker’s software, and the Android release can also affect capture.
What “security policy” means
The message generally means the app or device has told Android that the current content must not be captured. It does not mean Android has a hidden, supported override that you can enable in Settings. Hardware-button screenshots still follow the window’s security setting.

Try the normal Android screenshot first
For an ordinary, unrestricted screen:
- Open the screen you need.
- Press Power and Volume Down at the same time.
- Release both buttons when the capture animation or thumbnail appears.
On some phones, holding the Power button opens a menu containing Screenshot. Labels and gestures vary by manufacturer; use the phone maker’s support instructions if neither method is available.
Capture a long page
Android 12 and later support Capture more on most scrollable screens that allow scrolling. Take a normal screenshot, then tap Capture more and select the additional area. This is an extension of an allowed screenshot, not a way to bypass a protected window. If the button is missing, that screen or device does not support scrolling capture.
Can screen recording capture a blocked app?
Screen recording is not a dependable workaround. From Quick Settings, pull down twice, tap Screen record, choose audio or touch-display options if offered, and start recording. A protected app may blank, omit, or restrict its content in the recording because the same secure-display rules can apply to non-secure outputs.
Android notes that FLAG_SECURE does not always predict perfectly whether recording is active on every device. Therefore, results can differ by recorder, manufacturer, and Android version. Do not assume that a recording showing the app proves the app’s protection was defeated, and do not distribute protected content without authorization.

Legitimate ways to obtain the information
When capture is blocked, choose an authorized route based on what you actually need: a still image, the underlying data, or a record for another person.

These options preserve the information with permission; they are not techniques for defeating capture controls. Google Play policy requires apps to respect other apps’ FLAG_SECURE declarations and prohibits workarounds intended to bypass them. Accessibility tools have a narrow policy exception for their permitted functions, but protected content still may not be transmitted, saved, or cached for use outside the device. An accessibility service is not a general screenshot bypass.
Screenshot prevention and screenshot detection are different
Android 14 introduced a privacy-preserving screenshot-detection API. An app can register a callback for a supported hardware-button screenshot event. The callback tells the app that the event occurred; it does not give the app the captured image.
This detection API should not be confused with FLAG_SECURE. The flag controls whether the window appears in screenshots or non-secure displays. Detection reports a qualifying screenshot event after the user invokes it. The documented Android 14 detector recognizes a specific hardware-button combination and does not detect ADB screenshot test commands. Its documentation was updated September 16, 2026.

Why common “bypass” ideas are poor choices
- Repeated button presses: timing cannot override a secure window.
- Third-party screenshot apps: apps receive only what Android makes available; a secure surface may still be blank.
- Casting to another display:
FLAG_SECUREis specifically intended to prevent display on non-secure outputs. - Rooting, patched apps, or modified system images: these can weaken device security, violate service terms, expose credentials, and create unsupported behavior. They are not an authorized solution.
- ADB or silent screen-buffer tools: Android 10 and later restrict silent screen-buffer capture. The supported MediaProjection flow requires user consent, and consent does not guarantee that a protected window will be included.
Android’s own guidance once described keyboard-tap recording as reliable on “around 70% of devices” for Android 11 (API 30) and lower. That qualification is specific to that older scenario; it is not a current success rate for screenshots, recording, or modern Android phones.
Troubleshooting: identify the real restriction
The screenshot is black or blank only inside one app
Test the home screen or another ordinary app. If those captures work, the restriction is likely app-level, commonly a secure window. Use the app’s export or support channel.
Every app refuses screenshots
Check whether the phone has a work profile, device-management software, parental controls, or an administrator policy. A managed-device administrator can restrict capture globally. Contact that administrator rather than modifying the device.
The button combination does nothing
Confirm that Power and Volume Down are pressed together, check the manufacturer’s alternate Power-menu control, and ensure there is free storage. If the device’s normal screenshot feature is unavailable everywhere, consult the manufacturer.

Capture more is missing
The feature requires Android 12 or later and a screen that supports scrolling capture. Some apps deliberately disable it even when ordinary screenshots work.
A recording contains audio but no app image
That behavior is consistent with a protected or non-secure display. Stop trying alternate recorder apps and request an authorized copy instead.
The app recently changed behavior
Record the app version, Android version, phone model, and exact message. An app update, work-policy change, or operating-system update may have introduced the restriction. Send those details to support.
