First identify what is missing: a saved image file, a clipboard copy, the Snipping Tool editing window, or the notification banner. Those are separate outcomes, so a missing banner does not necessarily mean the screenshot failed. Check the saved file and clipboard first, then notifications; use Windows’ built-in keyboard shortcuts to determine which part is not working.
Find out which screenshot result is missing
A screenshot can be captured without appearing in the place you expect. Use this quick guide to choose the right check before taking another capture.

Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool guide says captures are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder, and that Snipping Tool settings include automatic-save behavior and the default Screenshots folder. The folder can therefore differ from the one you have been checking. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool capture guide.
Check whether the screenshot was saved somewhere else
- Open Snipping Tool and select See more > Settings.
- Review the automatic-save setting. If it is off, a capture may need to be saved manually.
- Check the configured default Screenshots folder. Open that folder and look for the newest capture.
- If the image is visible in Snipping Tool, choose Save as and save a copy to a location you can find, such as the Desktop.
Use the full save path shown in the Save dialog rather than assuming that every capture goes to the same folder. If Save as produces a file in the known location, the capture itself worked; the issue was where the file was being saved or looked for. If no image is available to save, continue with the clipboard and alternate-shortcut checks.

Test the clipboard when nothing appears as a file
Windows+Shift+S opens the regional capture experience: select an area, then paste the result into an image-capable app. Microsoft describes this shortcut as copying the selected region to the clipboard. A clipboard copy is not the same thing as a saved screenshot file.
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Select the screen area to capture.
- Open Paint or another app that accepts images, and press Ctrl+V.
- If the image appears, use that app’s save command to create a file in a known location.
If pasting works, the capture and clipboard copy succeeded; the unresolved part is saving or locating a file. If paste produces no image, try another image-capable app and then test the full-screen shortcut below. This separates a clipboard problem from a problem specific to where you expected the Snipping Tool file to appear.

Use clipboard history only if it is enabled
Windows+V opens clipboard history, but it is not a guaranteed record of earlier captures unless history is turned on. If Windows prompts you to enable it, follow the prompt. You can also check Settings > System > Clipboard. Microsoft’s Using the clipboard guide explains clipboard history and its settings.

Clipboard history is useful for checking copied items, but do not use it as the only test: a screenshot can be available for pasting even when you are not using history. Test with Ctrl+V in an image-capable app as well.

Use a different Windows capture shortcut
Try the two built-in routes below to determine whether the problem is limited to one capture method.
- Windows+PrtScn: captures the whole screen and saves the image under PicturesScreenshots. Open that folder and check for the latest image.
- Windows+Shift+S: lets you select a region and copies it to the clipboard. Paste with Ctrl+V to verify the result.
If one shortcut works and another does not, note the working output (file or clipboard) and use it as a temporary route while you check the failing route’s settings. If neither route produces a visible result, return to the output-specific checks: inspect the relevant save folder, paste into an image app, and review notifications separately. Microsoft documents both shortcuts in its Windows keyboard-shortcut list.

Look for a notification that did not appear
A notification banner is an alert about the capture, not the screenshot file itself. On Windows 11, open Notification Center with Windows+N or select the clock/notification bell on the taskbar. Review the notification list for Snipping Tool. Microsoft notes that when Do Not Disturb is on, most banners are silenced and notifications can instead be reviewed in Notification Center. The bell can also indicate that new notifications are waiting.
- Open Settings > System > Notifications.
- Check that notifications are enabled and review Snipping Tool’s notification options.
- Check whether Do Not Disturb is active.
- Open Notification Center and look for a Snipping Tool alert.
These Windows 11 navigation details are documented in Microsoft’s Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows guide. If a file exists or pasting succeeds, the absent banner was a notification issue rather than proof of a failed capture. If the banner is visible but you expected a file, check the save folder and automatic-save setting instead.

- Image appears after Ctrl+V, but no file is present: save the image from the app where you pasted it, then check Snipping Tool’s automatic-save setting and configured folder.
- File exists, but there was no banner: review Notification Center, Snipping Tool notification settings, and Do Not Disturb.
- Windows+PrtScn creates a file, but your Snipping Tool capture is not where expected: check Snipping Tool’s own configured Screenshots folder; the fallback’s PicturesScreenshots destination is separate.
- Windows+Shift+S gives a pasteable image, but you were searching folders: save the clipboard image from an app; a clipboard copy is not by itself a saved file.
- No file, paste result, or notification is visible: test each output route in turn rather than treating the missing notification as the cause. Use Save as where an image is available, paste into an image-capable app, and check the full-screen fallback folder.
This sequence does not assume a single cause. It narrows the problem to locating or saving a file, receiving a clipboard copy, or seeing the notification.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 interface differences
The Microsoft support pages cited here cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the exact Snipping Tool and Settings labels can vary by Windows and app version. The path Settings > System > Notifications and the Windows+N Notification Center shortcut are given for Windows 11; do not assume the same notification navigation on Windows 10. If a label differs, use the equivalent notification or Snipping Tool settings available in your installed version.

The troubleshooting distinction remains useful across versions: verify the saved file, test the clipboard, and inspect notifications as different outcomes. Microsoft’s clipboard guidance also states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That support date does not, on its own, explain why a screenshot is missing.
