For most eBay sellers, start with eBay Product Research in Seller Hub. eBay’s official tool is free to sellers with Seller Hub access, covers up to three years of marketplace sales data, and reports metrics such as sold-price ranges, sales trends, shipping costs, seller counts and, for items sold within 90 days, sell-through rate. Use Sourcing Insights when your account and marketplace make it available. Paid services such as ZIK Analytics, AutoDS, Sell The Trend and Helium 10 may fit particular workflows, but their current features, prices and access should be verified with each vendor before you subscribe.
Which eBay research tool should you use first?
Use eBay Product Research as the baseline. It is the only option in this guide whose key capabilities and access terms are supported by eBay’s own documentation. Open Seller Hub and look for the Research tab; eBay also describes access through its mobile apps. The exact menu and eligibility can vary by marketplace, so a US account should not assume that a UK or other regional account has identical access.
Product Research is useful for three common jobs:
- Pricing inventory you already own by studying actual sold results.
- Estimating demand and competition before sourcing.
- Comparing categories, conditions, formats and buyer locations without relying only on visible asking prices.
What eBay Product Research includes
Three years of sales history
eBay says Product Research can search up to the last three years of sales data for millions of items. That longer window helps reveal seasonality and longer-term price movement. It is not a market-size statistic, and older sales may be less relevant when a product, generation or buyer preference has changed.
Metrics beyond a completed-listing list
Depending on the query, eBay reports average sold price, sold-price range, sales trends, average shipping cost, the share of listings offering free shipping, seller counts and selling format. Searches for items sold within 90 days can also show sell-through rate. Treat averages as a starting point: condition, completeness, accessories, defects and shipping policy can move an individual listing far from the mean.

Accepted Best Offer prices
Product Research includes actual accepted Best Offer prices in its calculations. That is materially different from copying the visible asking price or an ended listing’s original price. When valuing an item, compare like-for-like condition and then use the accepted-price distribution to set a realistic range.
Search and filtering controls
Search by keyword or product, then narrow results with filters such as category, condition, brand, color, and buyer or seller location. Available filters can depend on the query and interface. Start narrowly enough to avoid mixing generations or unrelated accessories, then broaden the search to test whether the result is robust.

Use both when possible: Product Research supplies the broad baseline, while a recent completed-listing check catches fast-moving price changes.
How to research an item step by step
- Open Seller Hub. Sign in to the marketplace where you sell and open the Research tab. If Product Research is missing, confirm that your account has Seller Hub access and check your local eBay Seller Centre for eligibility.
- Search the exact item. Include model number, capacity, generation or another identifying detail. Avoid a broad term that combines the item with cases, parts or bundles.
- Set the category and condition. Select the product category and match new, used, refurbished or other relevant condition. Compare identical conditions before reading the average.
- Choose a time window. Use the longer history to identify trends, then inspect the most recent 90-day results for current pricing and sell-through where available.
- Review the distribution. Record average price, range, shipping cost, free-shipping share, seller count and selling format. Investigate outliers rather than deleting them automatically; an unusually high sale may include rare accessories, while a low sale may reflect damage.
- Check Best Offer sales. Use the accepted amounts included by Product Research instead of treating the crossed-out or original asking price as the sale value.
- Test nearby searches. Change one variable at a time—condition, brand, location or category—to see which factor explains the change in demand or price.
- Write a listing decision. Set a target price, minimum acceptable price, shipping approach and expected time to sell. Keep the evidence with your inventory record so you can update it later.
When Sourcing Insights is useful
Sourcing Insights is designed to identify categories with high demand and low inventory. eBay’s US guidance associates access with business sellers who have a Basic Store subscription or higher. The Seller Center overview gives the same Basic-or-above condition. Verify the rule in your own marketplace before upgrading; subscription eligibility and feature availability can differ by region.

How to evaluate paid eBay research services
A June 4, 2026 comparison article lists ZIK Analytics, eBay Product Research/Terapeak, AutoDS, Sell The Trend and Helium 10. It characterizes ZIK as eBay-focused, AutoDS as a dropshipping option, Sell The Trend as trend-oriented and Helium 10 as multi-platform. Those descriptions are leads for evaluation, not independently verified conclusions here. Do not rely on an article’s prices, trials, integrations or ranking without checking the provider’s current documentation.
Data provenance and time span
Ask whether the service receives data from eBay, estimates it from public pages or combines several sources. Confirm the date range, refresh frequency and marketplaces covered. A polished dashboard cannot compensate for stale or incomplete data.

Look for the measures your workflow actually needs: sales volume, sell-through, price range, trend, shipping, listing supply and seller competition. Confirm filters for category, condition, brand, format and location rather than assuming every service has the same controls.
Workflow and marketplace fit
Pricing your own stock, finding a sourcing category, managing dropshipping products and operating across several marketplaces are different jobs. Map the tool to one job first, then verify integrations and account permissions. A service named in a comparison article is not automatically suitable for your marketplace or business model.
Total cost and access
Record the current plan price, trial terms, usage limits, export restrictions and cancellation policy directly from the vendor. Recheck before paying because these details change frequently.

Using asking prices as sale prices
Symptom: your planned price is higher than actual transactions. Fix: use Product Research’s sold results and accepted Best Offer amounts, then compare the recent 90-day view.
Ignoring shipping
Symptom: two apparently similar sales produce different net results. Fix: include average shipping cost and free-shipping status in your comparison, then calculate your own postage and fees.
