There is no official character limit for og:description. The Open Graph specification calls it an optional, recommended property and suggests “a one to two sentence description of your object.” Write a concise, self-contained summary, putting the most important meaning first so the preview still works when a platform shortens or hides part of it.
Numbers such as 155, 160 or 200 characters are editorial rules of thumb or observations about a particular preview, not protocol requirements. The consuming service decides how much text to render.
What the Open Graph protocol actually requires
Open Graph defines metadata that services can use when a URL is shared. Four basic properties are required for a complete object: og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. og:description is optional, but recommended because it gives the sharing service useful explanatory text.
The specification describes the value as a one- to two-sentence description of the object. It does not publish a numeric maximum, minimum, truncation point or universal display width. Therefore, an answer such as “the maximum is 200 characters” is not an Open Graph rule.

Protocol limit versus preview display
The protocol treats the description as a string. A social network, messaging app or link-preview client may impose its own layout, line count or truncation behavior. That behavior can vary by device, application version, language, card type and available space. A tag can be valid even when a particular card shows only part of its value.
How long should your description be?
Use one or two natural sentences that explain what the page offers. A practical target is the shortest wording that communicates the page’s value without needing the title or surrounding page copy. Keep the strongest claim near the beginning, because that is the portion most likely to remain visible if a preview is shortened.
A reliable writing formula
- State the page’s subject or outcome.
- Add the most useful differentiator, audience, or action.
- Remove greetings, keyword lists, navigation labels and filler.
For an article, describe the answer the reader will get. For a product page, describe the product and its primary benefit. For a documentation page, identify the task or API covered. Make the sentence understandable without relying on og:title.

The stronger versions are self-contained sentences, not keyword inventories. They also avoid promising a specific preview length that the platform may not honor.

Facebook controls its own card rendering, so the amount of text shown is a presentation decision rather than an Open Graph limit. The Open Graph project points publishers to Facebook’s official Sharing Debugger (also called the Object Debugger) to inspect the tags Facebook fetched. Use it after publishing a new tag or changing an existing one.

Why a correct edit can look unchanged
Preview services cache fetched metadata. A debugger or share composer may continue displaying an earlier value until it fetches the URL again. Check the fetched properties in the debugger, confirm the page returns the new HTML, and then test a fresh share. Do not “fix” a cache delay by adding arbitrary characters to the description.
What LinkedIn expects
LinkedIn’s official guidance requires og:title, og:image, og:description and og:url for a shareable website. Its preview uses the description as the explanatory text in the card, but LinkedIn still determines the final rendering and truncation.
After an edit, use LinkedIn’s Post Inspector (the LinkedIn inspection workflow) to request a fresh fetch and review the properties LinkedIn received. If the inspector shows the old value, investigate caching or the response served to crawlers before changing your copy.

Implementing og:description correctly
Place the tag in the initial document head
Put the property in the server-rendered HTML <head>, not only in content added after page load by client-side JavaScript. Crawlers may not execute your application code before reading metadata.

</html>Use the exact canonical URL in og:url, an absolute HTTPS image URL, and one description for the page’s current language. Escape quotation marks correctly in the HTML attribute. If your framework generates tags from a template, verify the final response rather than only the source template.

Keep the metadata internally consistent
og:titleshould identify the same page as the description.og:urlshould match the canonical share URL you want indexed and shared.og:imageshould resolve without authentication or a browser-only session.- The description should match the visible page and should not claim content that requires a later interaction.
A repeatable validation workflow
- Inspect the raw response. Request the published URL and search the returned HTML for one
og:descriptiontag. Confirm it is inside<head>and contains the expected value. - Check for duplicates. Multiple descriptions generated by a layout, plugin and application can leave a crawler choosing an unpredictable value. Keep one authoritative tag.
- Check the four basic properties. Confirm title, type, image and URL are present alongside the optional description.
- Run Facebook’s Sharing Debugger. Review the properties Facebook fetched and request a re-scrape after a change.
- Run LinkedIn’s Post Inspector. Confirm LinkedIn receives the new title, image, description and URL.
- Test the actual share surface. Review the card in the destination app on the devices your audience uses. A valid tag does not guarantee identical layouts.
Choosing between candidate descriptions
When two versions are both grammatical, evaluate them against five questions:
- Does the first sentence state the page’s value?
- Does it remain understandable if the final words disappear?
- Does it work on both Facebook and LinkedIn instead of relying on one platform’s layout?
- Does it complement, rather than repeat awkwardly, the title and image?
- Is the tag present in the initial HTML response received by a crawler?
This framework is more dependable than selecting a string solely because it fits an arbitrary character counter.
Common failures and fixes
The preview shows no description
Confirm the property name is exactly og:description, the tag uses property rather than an unrelated attribute, and the tag is in the returned document head. Then request a fresh fetch in the platform’s debugger.
The old description remains after deployment
Inspect the live response first. If it contains the new value, the remaining issue is likely a cached preview. Re-scrape with the official debugger or inspector and allow the service to refresh.
The description is cut off
That is normal platform behavior, not evidence of a protocol violation. Rewrite the opening so the essential meaning appears first. Do not add a supposed “maximum” attribute; Open Graph has none.

The page source has the tag, but crawlers do not
Check redirects, authentication, robots or firewall rules, and whether a server-side template emits different HTML to non-browser requests. Metadata inserted only after hydration can be missed. Compare the raw HTTP response with what you see in a browser’s Elements panel.

Verify that each service fetched the same URL and that no duplicate tags or redirect targets provide conflicting metadata. Differences in card design and cache timing can still produce different visible results after the source is consistent.

Open Graph tags add negligible document size, but the linked image can affect how quickly a preview is generated. Serve the image from a stable HTTPS URL and avoid URLs that require a logged-in browser. Keep descriptions free of secrets, personal data and temporary campaign tokens; social services may cache them.
When changing a description, deploy the HTML, verify the response, then refresh each platform’s cache through its official inspection tool. Record the canonical URL and the date of the change so a later cache investigation has a known reference point.

Is og:description required for every Open Graph object?
No. It is optional, while og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url are the four basic required properties.
Should I copy my HTML meta description into the OG tag?
You can, but it is not mandatory. Adapt the wording when the social card needs a clearer promise or a different emphasis than search-result text.

Can an emoji or non-Latin language be used?
Yes, provided the document declares the correct character encoding and the value accurately represents the page. Rendering still depends on the destination platform and device fonts.
Will changing the tag alter an already published social post?
Usually the existing post retains the card data it stored when shared. A new fetch affects later shares or a platform’s refreshed preview, not necessarily every historical post.
