Do not select one utility because its name sounds more general. The two programs have different output contracts even though they share an engine and a command-line style.
What the two programs actually do
wkhtmltopdf
wkhtmltopdf runs without a display service and converts HTML pages into a PDF. It can accept one or more pages, making it suitable for a report assembled from several URLs or documents. The project homepage illustrates the basic form with wkhtmltopdf http://google.com google.pdf. The command-line manual includes controls such as --window-status, which can delay rendering until the page reports a chosen window-status value.
wkhtmltoimage
wkhtmltoimage uses the same headless Qt WebKit approach but writes an image instead of a PDF. Use it when the consumer needs pixels: a screenshot fixture, a preview, a visual regression artifact or an image embedded in another system. Its output is not a paginated document, so it is the wrong choice for invoices or reports that must flow across PDF pages.

- Both are open-source command-line utilities in the wkhtmltopdf project.
- Both render with Qt WebKit and can run without an X server or other display service.
- Both inherit the renderer’s age and its behavior around modern web features.
- Both depend on the particular binary you install; distribution packages can differ from builds that include patched Qt.
Maintenance status and why it matters
The project identifies 0.12.6 as the stable series, released June 11, 2020 (the wkhtmltopdf project, 2020). GitHub reports that the upstream wkhtmltopdf/wkhtmltopdf repository was archived on January 2, 2023 and is read-only (GitHub, 2023). Those dates do not make every deployment unusable, but they do mean you should verify operating-system support, package provenance and required features before standardizing on it.

The project status page describes the Qt WebKit foundation as old, notes that Qt WebKit was deprecated and later removed from Qt, and discusses related security concerns. A binary supplied by a Linux distribution may not expose exactly the same options as an official build: the downloads guidance specifically warns that some features depend on patched Qt. Record the binary version and test the actual target image rather than assuming that a command tested on a laptop behaves identically in production.
Choose by page behavior, not only file extension
When wkhtmltopdf is a reasonable fit
- Your source HTML is controlled by your application or a trusted author.
- The layout is primarily server-rendered and does not depend on modern browser APIs.
- You need a PDF file and can pin a known binary in your build or deployment image.
- You can test fonts, external assets, page breaks and any JavaScript timing used by the report.
When wkhtmltoimage is a reasonable fit
- Your downstream system consumes a single image rather than a paginated document.
- You want a command-line capture in a script or CI job without operating a browser display.
- The page is simple enough for the Qt WebKit renderer and you can accept its visual limitations.
When to start with another renderer
If JavaScript is central to the page, the project status guidance suggests Puppeteer or a wrapper. For controlled report generation, it names WeasyPrint and Prince as alternatives to consider. These are suggestions from the project materials, not comparative test results; select one only after checking its license, platform support, CSS coverage and security model for your workload.
Installation and a first conversion
- Obtain a binary or build from source. Prefer a package whose provenance you can document. Check whether it includes the patched-Qt features your command requires.
- Verify the executable. Run
wkhtmltopdf --versionand record the output in your deployment notes. Runwkhtmltoimage --versionfor the image utility. Do not assume the two binaries were built from identical packages. - Prepare a controlled HTML fixture. Include local styles, images, web fonts and any script that affects the final layout so that you can test the real page rather than a trivial example.
- Convert to the required format. For PDF, run
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com report.pdf. For an image, use the corresponding image command form,wkhtmltoimage https://example.com page.png, with an output filename appropriate to your build. - Compare the artifact in CI. Check that the file exists, has a non-zero size and contains the expected page or image. Keep a known-good fixture for upgrades or base-image changes.
The project homepage’s documented PDF example is wkhtmltopdf http://google.com google.pdf. Replace the URL with a page you control when testing; public sites can change or reject automated requests.

Handling JavaScript and delayed content
Qt WebKit may finish its initial load before an application has populated the page. If your page can signal readiness, use the documented --window-status option and have the page set window.status to the exact value expected by the command. This is a synchronization mechanism, not a guarantee that every modern JavaScript framework will render correctly.
Test pages that load data asynchronously, insert images lazily or depend on browser APIs unavailable in the old engine. If you cannot make the page deterministic with the available options, moving to a current browser automation tool is usually a more maintainable path than adding arbitrary delays. The project status guidance specifically points toward Puppeteer or a wrapper for dynamic JavaScript.
Security: treat input trust as a hard boundary
Ashish Kulkarni, the wkhtmltopdf maintainer, gives this warning on the project status page: Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!

This is not a claim that every invocation is unsafe. It is a deployment rule: do not pass arbitrary customer HTML or JavaScript to a process with broad filesystem, network or operating-system privileges. For report jobs, restrict the input to templates and data your application controls, sanitize any user-authored fields, run the converter as a low-privilege account and isolate it from sensitive network resources. If your product requirement is to render arbitrary web pages, choose a renderer and sandbox designed for that threat model, then perform a separate security review.

Troubleshooting common failures

Performance, reliability and operating cost
No independent benchmark in the available project material establishes a current speed, fidelity or security winner between wkhtmltopdf and wkhtmltoimage. Measure your own pages, including the slowest assets and largest reports. Capture timing, exit status and output validation in CI so a renderer failure cannot silently publish an empty artifact.
The utilities are open-source command-line software rather than a hosted capture service, so you operate the binaries, workers, fonts, networking and upgrades yourself. The archived upstream repository and 2020 stable release increase the importance of pinning a known build and retesting whenever your operating-system image changes. Keep the manual for your installed build close at hand because option availability can vary with packaging.
