What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose quality for the screenshot’s job, not by a universal slider. For UI text, tables, diagrams, and evidence, start with a lossless PNG or lossless WebP. For a published page where bytes matter, compare lossy WebP, AVIF, or JPEG against that master at the size readers will actually see. Keep the smallest file that preserves text edges, thin rules, colors, shadows, and transparency your workflow requires.
Start with the use case
The right format and dimensions depend on whether readers must verify pixels, read an interface, or download an image quickly. Decide this before changing compression settings.
| Purpose or content | Starting choice | Inspect before publishing |
|---|---|---|
| UI text, tables, diagrams, pixel comparison, QA evidence | PNG or lossless WebP | Letter edges, one-pixel rules, exact colors, transparency |
| General article illustration where size matters | Compare PNG/lossless WebP with lossy WebP or AVIF | Legibility, colored fringes, shadows, gradients, byte size |
| Photo-dominant page or mild loss acceptable | JPEG, lossy WebP, or AVIF candidates | Banding, halos, color shifts, final displayed quality |
| Transparent background required | PNG or WebP | Alpha support in the CMS, editor, and browser targets |
| Retina or high-DPR display | Capture enough device pixels for the intended CSS size | Sharpness at the reader’s likely display size; avoid oversized files |
MDN recommends lossless encoding for screenshots, diagrams, logos, and line art because blur and colored fringes around text and sharp edges are highly visible (MDN image formats guide).
PNG, JPEG, WebP, or AVIF?
PNG
PNG is lossless and dependable for text-heavy captures, diagrams, and exact visual comparison. It can be substantially larger than lossy alternatives, especially for photographic backgrounds. Use it as a master when later cropping, annotating, or re-encoding is likely.

JPEG
JPEG is lossy and broadly supported. Compression can create ringing, block patterns, and colored edges around small type or high-contrast controls. It is a candidate for photo-dominant screenshots, not an automatic choice for dashboards or documentation.
WebP
WebP supports both lossless and lossy encoding and transparency. Google for Developers reports that WebP lossless images are 26% smaller than PNGs, and WebP lossy images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality (Google for Developers). Those are format-level publisher comparisons, not a guarantee for your page; measure your own output.
AVIF
AVIF offers lossy and lossless modes and may reduce transfer size. Verify that every browser, CMS, test harness, editor, and archive receiving the file accepts it, then inspect small text and gradients. Keep a PNG or JPEG fallback where compatibility is uncertain. MDN documents using a <picture> element to offer modern formats with a compatible fallback (MDN).
Why a quality number is not universal
A setting such as “quality 80” is not comparable across JPEG, WebP, and AVIF encoders, and the same setting behaves differently on a text-only page and a photographic page. web.dev recommends trying compression levels until quality and file size meet your standard, then confirming the lossy result visually. High-contrast colored text on a flat background is especially likely to reveal chroma-subsampling artifacts.

Set dimensions from display size and DPR
Determine the image’s displayed width in CSS pixels and the likely device-pixel ratio (DPR). A 500 CSS-pixel image displayed at DPR 2 generally needs a 1,000-pixel intrinsic width for a sharp result, as illustrated by web.dev’s image-performance guidance. This is not a reason to multiply every dimension blindly: viewport width, responsive breakpoints, browser zoom, and the actual display slot also affect the capture.
- For repeatable QA, keep viewport, browser zoom, page state, and DPR identical between captures.
- For a fixed article slot, capture close to the largest intrinsic width that slot needs across supported DPRs.
- For full-page evidence, preserve the original viewport and DPR in the record so a later comparison is meaningful.
- Do not upscale a small capture and call it retina; capture at the required device-pixel dimensions.
A repeatable quality workflow
- Define the deliverable. Decide whether it is full-page evidence, a viewport image, a component crop, or a web illustration. Note the display width, transparency need, compatibility requirements, and whether pixel fidelity is mandatory.
- Stabilize capture conditions. Set the same URL state, viewport, browser zoom, fonts, DPR, and scroll position for every candidate. Dynamic content can otherwise be mistaken for compression damage.
- Export a lossless master. Save PNG or lossless WebP before making smaller derivatives. This preserves detail for future crops, annotations, and re-encoding.
- Create candidates. Produce lossless WebP, lossy WebP, AVIF, and JPEG only when each is accepted by the target workflow. Keep dimensions constant while comparing formats.
- Inspect at actual display size. Check lowercase text, icons, one-pixel borders, colored text on flat backgrounds, shadows, gradients, and transparent edges. Then inspect a 200–400% crop to diagnose artifacts.
- Measure bytes and loading. Record file size and, where relevant, decoded dimensions and transfer behavior. Choose the smallest candidate that passes the visual requirement.
- Document the recipe. Store viewport, DPR, dimensions, format, encoder, quality settings, and fallback policy so another person can recreate the asset.
Match format to downstream delivery
Use a lossless master when screenshots may be cropped repeatedly, annotated, or retained as evidence. Generate delivery files from that master rather than repeatedly recompressing an already lossy image. For public pages, serve modern formats when your audience and tooling support them, with PNG or JPEG fallback where required. A typical pattern is:
<picture>
<source srcset="dashboard.avif" type="image/avif">
<source srcset="dashboard.webp" type="image/webp">
<img src="dashboard.png" width="1000" height="625" alt="Sales dashboard screenshot">
</picture>
Confirm that your CMS does not strip alpha channels, alter color profiles, or recompress files unexpectedly. Browser support and downstream acceptance differ by audience and toolchain; standardize only after checking the actual workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCapture quality yourself with a browser
A browser automation workflow should set the viewport and DPR, wait for the page to become stable, capture the required region, and export a lossless master. The exact API differs by automation library, but the quality controls are the same:
- Wait for web fonts, images, and critical network requests before capture.
- Disable animations or capture at a deterministic state.
- Use a selector crop for a component instead of shrinking a full-page image later.
- Capture at the intended device-pixel dimensions, then create derivatives from the master.
- Check lazy-loaded images and consent overlays; both can change what is actually captured.
If a page is responsive, capture each intended viewport rather than relying on one wide image scaled down. Layout changes can alter line wrapping and make text appear to have a quality problem when the cause is a different viewport.

Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
Performance
Smaller files reduce transfer work, but a tiny file that blurs text fails its purpose. Compare decoded dimensions and displayed size, not just download bytes. Use responsive variants when the same screenshot appears in materially different slots.
Reliability
Dynamic pages can fail independently of image encoding. Record page state and use waits for fonts, selectors, or network idle. With ScreenshotNeo, inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed response headers so an automated pipeline can distinguish a clean shot from a bot check, blank page, timeout, failed load, or cache hit.
Cost

Text looks blurry
Check that the source was not upscaled, that intrinsic dimensions cover the CSS size multiplied by DPR, and that a lossy codec did not remove high-frequency detail. Return to the lossless master, recapture at the correct viewport, and compare at actual display size.
Colored halos appear around letters
This is commonly chroma-subsampling or ringing from lossy encoding. Try lossless PNG/WebP, a less aggressive lossy setting, or AVIF, and inspect colored text on flat backgrounds.
The file is huge despite compression
Confirm you are not capturing unnecessary device pixels or a full page for a small slot. Keep dimensions appropriate to the display, compare lossless WebP, and test lossy WebP or AVIF only after visual inspection.
Transparency disappeared
JPEG has no alpha channel. Export PNG or WebP and verify that the CMS and image-processing pipeline preserve transparency.

AVIF or WebP is rejected
Check browser, CMS, editor, test-harness, and archival support. Add a PNG/JPEG fallback with <picture> and retain the lossless master.
The screenshot contains a popup or blank page
Wait for the intended page state, handle consent, and disable overlays in your browser workflow. In an API pipeline, inspect the verdict headers and do not treat a failed or blank response as a valid visual artifact.
FAQ
Should every website screenshot be PNG?
No. PNG is a strong starting point for text and exact evidence, but WebP or AVIF can be smaller when the inspected result remains legible and the workflow supports the format.
Is quality 80 the best setting?
No universal value is established. Codec, content, dimensions, and display size change the result, so compare actual candidates.
What should I archive?
Keep a lossless master plus the capture conditions and derivative settings. This allows future crops and exports without stacking lossy damage.
