“No wkhtmltoimage executable found” means IMGKit is installed, but the separate wkhtmltoimage program is either missing or invisible on the PATH used by your running process. Install a wkhtmltopdf distribution that includes the image tool, verify the executable from the same environment as your application, and pass its absolute path to IMGKit when automatic discovery cannot find it.
The reliable sequence is: check which wkhtmltoimage (Linux/macOS) or where wkhtmltoimage (Windows), install a platform-matched package if no path is returned, then configure IMGKit with the real path and test the binary directly.
What the error actually means
IMGKit is a Python wrapper; it does not contain the renderer. wkhtmltoimage is a command-line executable distributed with wkhtmltopdf packages. IMGKit searches for that executable on PATH (using which on Unix-like systems and where on Windows), or you can provide a custom path in its configuration. Installing imgkit alone therefore cannot fix a missing-binary error.
There are two separate questions:
- Discovery: can the current process locate an executable named
wkhtmltoimage? - Execution: once found, can that binary start and render pages with its libraries, fonts and configuration?
The error in this article is a discovery failure. Continue with the execution and dependency checks if the message changes after the binary is found.

Fastest fix: check, install, configure, test
1. Check the path in the same environment
Run the command from the shell, virtual environment, container or deployment instance that runs your application:

where wkhtmltoimageA successful result is a full path such as /usr/local/bin/wkhtmltoimage or C:Program Fileswkhtmltopdfbinwkhtmltoimage.exe. If the command prints nothing, the executable is not installed in that environment or its directory is not on PATH.
You can perform the same check in Python, which avoids testing a different shell from the one your service uses:

The IMGKit README separates wrapper installation from renderer installation. Use a package that matches the deployed distribution and CPU architecture.

The downloads page identifies the 0.12.6 stable series, released June 11, 2020. Treat that listing as time-sensitive and verify the platform-specific download before deployment. Static packages still depend on system components such as font configuration and FreeType-related libraries; Alpine’s musl environment has compatibility limitations.

3. Give IMGKit the absolute path when PATH is unreliable
After locating the binary, configure IMGKit explicitly. This is often the cleanest solution for services, virtual environments, containers and Windows installations:

Run the reported path directly. This separates a missing executable from a renderer or library problem:

Why it works locally but fails on a server
PATH differs between your shell and the service
Web servers, workers and system services often start with a smaller PATH than your interactive terminal. A shell may find /usr/local/bin/wkhtmltoimage while a process launched by systemd, Supervisor, cron or a container cannot. Log shutil.which('wkhtmltoimage') at application startup, or configure the absolute path explicitly.
The binary was installed in another container stage
In a multi-stage image, installing wkhtmltopdf in the build stage does not place it in the final runtime stage. Copy the executable and every required shared library, font and fontconfig file, or install the distribution package again in the final stage. Confirm availability by running which inside the running container, not on the host.
Serverless and FaaS packaging
The wkhtmltopdf project’s FaaS guidance calls for extracting a distribution-specific package and bundling its libraries, configuration and fonts. Its Lambda example uses an Amazon Linux 2 package and sets FONTCONFIG_PATH=/opt/fonts. That is an example for the described package, not a universal recipe for every provider or runtime. Match the provider’s operating system, architecture and libc, and verify the binary during deployment.

Platform and package details that affect rendering
Linux packages and patched Qt
Debian or Ubuntu repository packages can omit the project’s patched Qt features. If your application depends on options provided by the official builds, compare the package behavior with the required options and use the matching release from the downloads page. Finding the executable proves only that discovery works; it does not prove that every rendering feature is available.
Fonts and system libraries
A binary can be present but fail with shared-library errors, missing glyphs or blank text when runtime libraries and fonts are absent. Install the font packages required by your documents, ensure fontconfig can read its configuration, and test with the same user that runs the service. The official project notes that even static builds rely on system packages, including font configuration and FreeType-related components.
Permissions and temporary directories
The service account must execute the file and write the destination and temporary directories. Check permissions with ls -l (Unix) or the file’s Security properties (Windows). A read-only filesystem, an unwritable temporary directory or a security policy can produce a failure after discovery.

IMGKit’s README recommends running the reported command directly when command execution fails. Preserve the complete command and stderr in deployment logs, but remove secrets such as cookies, Authorization headers and private URLs.

Security considerations
The official project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Treat HTML, JavaScript, URLs and local-file access as untrusted input. Sanitize content, restrict network access where possible, run the renderer with least privilege and isolate it from sensitive credentials.
