Kapture lets an MCP-compatible AI client control a browser tab through a browser extension and a local server. To use it, install the extension in a supported Chromium-based browser, configure the client to launch Kapture’s recommended bridge, connect a tab, and then ask the client to perform an action. The key detail is that installing the server alone is not enough: the extension and a connected tab are also required.
What Kapture does—and what you need
The Kapture project describes Kapture as “a Chrome DevTools Extension that enables browser automation through the Model Context Protocol (MCP).” In practice, an MCP client communicates with the Kapture server, which exchanges commands with the extension over a local WebSocket connection. The extension acts on browser tabs that you explicitly connect. Multiple compatible AI clients can use the same server and connected tabs, according to the Kapture project README.
- A Chromium-based browser: the installation guide names Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi.
- The Kapture browser extension.
- An MCP-compatible AI client, such as a client configured using the project’s guide.
- Node.js for the documented npx setup. The guide says Node.js 16 or later, while the repository README says Node.js 18 or later; the published documentation does not resolve that difference. If you encounter compatibility trouble, use Node.js 18 or later and consult the current Kapture guide.
These requirements and supported browser names come from the project’s README and MCP client guide; browser and client support can change, so check those pages for current details.
Install the Kapture browser extension
Option 1: Install from the Chrome Web Store
Use the project’s installation guide to open the Kapture listing in the Chrome Web Store and install the extension. This is the straightforward route for everyday use because it avoids loading an unpacked extension in developer mode.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Option 2: Load an unpacked extension
- Download or clone the Kapture repository and locate the extension folder.
- In your Chromium browser, open
chrome://extensions/. - Turn on Developer mode.
- Select the option to load an unpacked extension, then choose the extension folder.
- Keep the folder available if you need to reload or update the manually installed extension.
The project documents this manual route and notes that developer-mode warnings may appear. The Chrome Web Store route is preferable if you do not need a local development copy.
Configure an MCP client with the recommended bridge
For clients that support a stdio-based MCP server configuration, Kapture recommends the npx bridge. The bridge starts and manages the server and translates between the client’s stdio connection and Kapture’s WebSocket connection.

Use the configuration file or MCP settings panel appropriate to your client. Kapture’s client guide gives examples for Claude Desktop and Cline/VS Code, including configuration locations. Client settings and support can change; use the current guide rather than assuming every MCP client uses the same file format or path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The @latest tag requests the latest published version when npx resolves the package, so a later run may use a newer release than an earlier one.

Then configure a compatible client to connect to ws://localhost:61822/mcp. This route gives you more direct control but requires a client and configuration that support the documented WebSocket connection. The bridge is generally the simpler choice when your client supports the stdio-style configuration shown above; it manages the translation and server lifecycle for you.
Connect a browser tab and run an action
- Start the Kapture server through the configured bridge, or start it manually if you chose the WebSocket method.
- Open the website you want to work with in one of the supported Chromium-based browsers.
- Use the Kapture toolbar toggle or the Kapture DevTools panel to connect that tab.
- Check for the connected indicator before asking your MCP client to act. Kapture uses port
61822for the local connection. - Ask the client for a specific action, such as navigating to a URL, clicking a page control, filling a field, or taking a screenshot.
For example, after connecting a tab you could ask your client to navigate to a page, click a clearly identified button, and report the resulting page title. The precise tool names, parameters, and supported actions are maintained in Kapture’s live MCP client and tool documentation; check it when composing a workflow rather than relying on a remembered tool schema.

- Navigation and history: open pages and move through browser history.
- Page interaction: click elements and fill fields.
- Tab management: work with browser tabs.
- Inspection: inspect page content and view console or network information.
- Capture: take screenshots of a page.
- Composite sequences: use
composeto run a validated sequence of eligible commands on one tab. The sequence stops at its first failure; a supported read, such as a screenshot or DOM inspection, can be used as the last step to check the result.
For reliable workflows, confirm the intended tab is connected, account for content that loads dynamically or animates, choose specific selectors when interacting with elements, and handle failures rather than assuming each step succeeded. These are recommendations in Kapture’s documentation, not a guarantee that every website or interaction will behave identically.
Privacy and browser control
Kapture’s privacy policy, last updated June 2026, says the extension may access a connected tab’s URL and title, DOM or page content, console logs, screenshots, and form values when a command requests them. It describes communication with localhost on port 61822 and browser permissions including debugger and <all_urls>. The policy also says users can connect or disconnect tabs and that JavaScript execution is enabled only when the user chooses to allow it. These are disclosures by the project, not findings from an independent security audit; read the Kapture privacy policy before connecting sensitive pages.
Because browser automation can interact with real pages and form data, connect only tabs you intend the client to control. Avoid asking it to submit payments, make irreversible changes, or send sensitive information unless you have reviewed the action and its effects.

Troubleshooting Kapture
The MCP client does not start Kapture
- Check that Node.js and npx are installed and available to the client process.
- Confirm the configuration uses
commandset tonpxand the arguments-y,kapture-mcp@latest, andbridge. - Restart or reload the MCP client after editing its configuration.
- If a version-related error persists, note that the guide and README state different Node.js minimums; try Node.js 18 or later and consult the project’s current setup guide.
The client connects, but cannot control a page
- Verify the Kapture extension is installed and enabled in the same browser profile where the target tab is open.
- Connect the tab using the toolbar toggle or DevTools panel; the server cannot act on a tab that has not been connected.
- Check for the connected indicator and confirm the local server is running on the documented connection at port
61822. - If you chose manual WebSocket setup, verify the client is configured to reach
ws://localhost:61822/mcp. If it expects stdio rather than WebSocket, use the bridge configuration instead.
A click or form interaction fails
- Make the request more specific: identify the control by its visible label, role, or a stable selector where the available tools permit it.
- Wait for dynamic content to appear before interacting; a page may not be ready immediately after navigation.
- Check the page state after each important action. For a composed sequence, remember it stops at the first failed command.
- Confirm that the requested action is supported by the current tool reference and that the page has not changed since the selector or target was identified.
The extension does not load or update
- For the Web Store route, check that the extension is enabled in
chrome://extensions/. - For a manual installation, confirm Developer mode is on and that you selected the extension folder itself when loading it unpacked.
- After replacing or updating local extension files, use the browser’s extension controls to reload the unpacked extension and reconnect the tab.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot rather than interactive browser automation, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF with one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card required.
